oddworld stupied

no im not saying oddworld is stupied:D :D :D what things do you think are stupied it be in the game im a little mad at elm lazy basterd

As far as I am concerned with the overall games them selves I find nothing stupid about them. They convey a unique look into another world and its inhabitants. The way its cultures are very different but yet similar to ours.

Oddworld isn't stupied. I've never thought of the Oddworld games as stupied. Come to think of it, I don't think of anything as stupied, because stupied isn't a word.

Anyways, I think this is a spam topic. Mods...?

Alcar 10-04-2003 05:40 AM

This thread has potential, if herded in the correct direction.

As for things that were stupid in the game. Well, I'd say that the Elum Bell concept in the beta versions of Abe's Oddysee would have to be a very stupid idea. Thankgod it never made it into the final version. It was so out of place and so not Oddworld.

Alcar...

Xavier 10-04-2003 06:40 AM

please, refresh my mind, what was the early concept of the Elum Bell?

Alcar 10-04-2003 07:57 AM

Jesus, I am still tired. I didn't mean Elum Bell, I meant Elum Trap or the Elum Transporter, which ever one it was.

Alcar...

Wil 10-04-2003 08:32 AM

The Elum Trap, used by RuptureFarms to capture Elums for Elum Chubs, it certainly didn't seem to fit in with Oddworld's style.

I also think it's stupid that in MO the Mudokons have Vendos.

TheKhanzumer 10-04-2003 03:07 PM

I think anything put in the game for gameplay purposes only is stupid. Like the MO teleporters, vendo's, info booths, etc... There are better ways to accomplish the same thing, but making it fit into the oddworld universe.

Oh and product artillery was pretty stupid in my opinion.

Xavier 10-04-2003 03:15 PM

I suspected it was the elum trap you were talking about...
something stupid in oddworld? hmmm let me think

can't find anything else right now... :fuzconf:

I personally dont think there is anything stupid about oddworld or in the games. I do have a complaint though. I wish they would have kept the original form of possession for MO. I didnt really like the orb that you create. I also wish you could have done what they originally had planned such as when you posess a creature, you can either do a depossession that completely blows them up, or one where it just frees their mind and they go back to normal.

I agree about the orb, Al, but if you think about it, it's the only real way to do it. Just automatically possessing the closest enemy would be very frustrating for the player.

Sekto Springs 10-05-2003 03:09 AM

hmm....

Yes, the orb was the best thing to do for a 3D environment, even though it was annoying!:D

do not try and change it and don't feel offended because you like it.

HAHAHA!!! I love you, baby!

Stupid things... let's see...
SPOOCE!!! -MO
Paramite pig noises -MO
"Natural" Vendos -MO
SoBe Vendos -MO
Mudarchers -MO (Sorry, but peace-loving muds attacking sligs made me sad.)
The "bird" system -MO
Grenade Machines -AO/AE

But of course, there are plenty of good things about Oddworld... mainly in AO/AE, but still.

1) Spooce was a good idea, but the SpooceShrubs were stupid, indeed
2) I agree
3) I agree
4) I agree
5) Mudokons aren't 100% pace loving, there were big fights between Mudokon tribes in the past
6) the bird system is pretty much the same as in AO and AE, and I tought it was pretty original
7) I don't realy think it's stupid

Mojo 10-05-2003 07:02 PM

Don't forget the barfing Scrabs...

*Everyone looks at AS in a weird way*

I swear, those Scrabs sounded like they had to barf...

What happened to the cool screams and shrieks???

SeaRex 10-05-2003 08:33 PM

I guess grenades weren't so stupid... I mean, the sligs have to have ammunition stockpiles somewhere, right?

However, I also think possesing your farts was stupid. It wasn't even funny.

[rabble rabble rabble]

The reason I didn't like mudarchers and the MO bird system was because it took away from Abe's clumsy innocence. The bird system made the game too easy. I mean, if Abe gets shot, he is supposed to die, not leak birds! In MO, I just wanted him to be vulnerable again... normal. Not a super hero. An average shmuck. Like he was before.

The Mudarchers didn't... fit. The reason I liked the first two games is that Abe was almost always helpless. He (well... you... the player) had to rely on stealth and cunning to get past sligs; you only killed them if there was no other way of evading them. In MO, Abe comes charging over a hill with an army of muds and kills the sligs. Woo sha bang. You feel like you've accomplished nothing. Or at least, that's the way I felt.

oh, that's what you mean by bird system, then I do agree, Abe should be more vulnerabe, but the game has to stay playable

Oh yes, another complaint. I wish the gamespeak had been much more advanced, but I know with the time crunch so many things had to go. But hopefully in ME or something we will finally get gamespeak version 3.0.

I also wish there would have been more to do with the glukkons like originally planned where you could actually take control of the company etc. More RPG elements.

I think it was a mistake to follow up the sublime AO with all the cartoony bits in AE. I liked the flying Sligs, and the Fleeches and Slurgs were just acceptable, but I really didn't like the Greeters. They were rather good from a gameplay point of view, but I didn't like their design or their silly voices. There were too many things in AE that were too Earth-like. I know that Oddworld is meant to be a parody of Earth, but AO had its own mad internal logic and was believable as a world of its own, but AE felt too much like a 'copy-and-paste' fantasy world. I didn't like the characters saying 'we're screwed' or 'this bites', or the Brewmaster's silly accent (I've heard that was due to problems with compressing the sound files, but still). Nor did I approve of the cartoony SFX when Abe falls off the ledge at the start of the game, the 'ker-ching!' noise when the flying Slig in the FMV contemplates promotion, or the comedy xylophone noise when the Glukkons walk.

AO was far more wonderfully dark and twisted, in contrast with the more colourful AE. The AE Glukkons, although funnier, were too humany and lost much of their mysteriousness. In particular, their clothing - the AO ones wore clothes rather like the aliens in Mars Attacks, but their clothes in AE look too much like ordinary business suits. And the GlockStar outfit is just stupid as well. In fact so is the word 'GlockStar'... and 'Chump', 'Big cheese' and 'Wannabe'. They're not even funny. 'Zulag' was a good word. And so was 'Magog Cartel' - not original words, but appropriately chosen. I'd like to have seen more of this nomenclature.

I haven't played MO, but what I've heard of its GameSpeak sounds just painful.

i dont know i like that idea it brings in the new technologies that oddworld has like the security orbs and greeters but still keeping the industrial look shame it wasnt on the pc version

yeah i kinda agree i fear that OWI are losing that dark feel slowly and they dont realise it take the slig visor the orginal looked a whole lot better
