PC vs. PS

Yes this is another debate thred.

Do you use a PS or PC to play the first two Oddworld games?
Or both?

I'm interested in the amount of people in each catagorie, so please reply!

Cloverfield 08-13-2003 01:59 PM

I have the games for both PC and PS.

For ease of controls, I prefer the PS version, as it's much easier to use the controller combinations than to try and locate the correct numerical keys for gamespeak. Also, I prefer a controller to using arrow keys to control. Also I prefer playing games on a console to PC, as you don't have to install them, etc.

However, when it comes to running a website I much prefer the PC version. As I can easily take screenshots (which is how my layout was created, from using parts of the screenshots). I would kill to make a MO layout for the main page, but seeing I can't get screenshots from my Xbox ... this is a useless task.

PC is ruler over all so I play it on PC. BOW DOWN TO YOUR MASTER PATHETIC CONSOLES!! Er... Besides, the original Oddworld came out for PC first..nyah

The Abe games were made for the PlayStation by OWI, and then ported to PC by Digital Dialect. :p

I prefered console gaming and joypads, so I got the PS versions, obviously, plus I didn't have a good PC back then. But now I'd really love to get my hands on PC versions of the games so I can take screenshots and look at the backgrounds in greater detail.

Sekto Springs 08-13-2003 09:58 PM

i started on PC but i bought all the games for PS aswell.

oddguy 08-14-2003 04:00 AM

I previously never had PS1, so when I bought Playstation 2 I got PS2 and PS1 games, since PS2 can play both. My first PS1 game was AE and that's when I was hooked! I don'y have PC versions of either game, but would like to get them! :D

Xavier 08-14-2003 03:17 PM

I play on PC... I don't have an PS
I only miss the Guardian angle, :(

LuLu_Fund 08-14-2003 06:33 PM

I definitely prefer playing these kinda games on consoles like PS1, better controls, much better because console is specifically designed to play these games. I've tried the PC versions, don't like using the keyboard to manouvre! And if you don't have a top-notch up-to-date comp, you always have a few probs because of its multi-purpose. I'm lucky I've got WinTV on one of my computers, so I can take screenshots on PS1 or XBOX.

I missed gaurdian angel too and I've got the PS version! :crying: I ordered AO from amazon and when I got it everything was cool................except for the fact that when I hit to play gaurdian angel it just plays opening credits! :flames:

DieselCat18 08-22-2003 04:37 AM

I don't own a PS...so I can't compare AO and AE to that of playing it on my PC...... I do enjoy playing MO on my Xbox because I prefer the controller over using the mouse and keyboard....I have been considering buying a game controller for my PC, making it much earier to play all my other PC games...I guess some poeple like the mouse & keyboard...I don't......

Alcar 08-22-2003 10:46 AM

I prefer any console game over a PC game. I don't play any computer (PC) games, as they tick me off. I only play games found on consoles.

Plus, one of those modern games they have these days would overload and destroy my PC :p

GrigtheSlig 08-22-2003 01:32 PM

Colsole is so much better that PC games! I had Tomb Raider on PC before I got it on PS, and the graphics on PS were so much better! And the controls for PC are really confusing and stuff.

Oddsville 08-22-2003 07:00 PM

I originally played the games on the PlayStation councel which is probably why I like it that way so much better. I did, however, play AO on PC one time. I didn't like it too much cause it just seemed different but Im sure I'd be saying the opposite if I'd play'd it on PC first off.

What the hell is "Guardian Angle"

And as for PS better than PC for games, on a graphics and control front I say: HA!!

Have you seen Populous for PS? IT SUCKS!!

On PC the controles are more varied, the spells are easier to use, and it's not a bunch of awkward looking polygons! (even without 3D acceleration)

Real-time stratagies and sims, I'll agree are better on PC, basically because you need a point-and-click interface to play properly. I can't say I've ever played such games on the PS, though, besides the irritating yet compelling Z demo.

PC graphics are better as well, unless the game uses a lower resolution, like my AO and AE demos, but when it comes to things like movies and sound, I'm going straight back to my console. I've never had a particularly stunning computer media-wise.

True, true, but which had a larger impact on the gaming community? Which console sold more copies?

You can't upgrade a playstation, you just have to pay the ridiculous price when the next model comes out.... or wait.

Wil 08-27-2003 08:09 AM

LOL, I can tell you're a die-hard computer fan, Forbidden Paradise. Personally, the only games I've ever found best to play on computers are business sims, point-and-click adventures, top-down real-time strategy and, of course, Internet games. The thing is with consoles is that you can't mix-and-match them, meaning if a game is made to be played on it, it can play period. With a computer, there are so many hardware and software aspects that can be mixed and matched (External drive capabilities, multimedia drivers, RAM, hard drive space and speed, operating system, interface, input devices to name a few) that a game so easily will just not install or work. Windows XP brings that to light, as games that worked perfectly on older OSes suddenly ceased to play.

What's more, the great variety of combinations possible create a much less stable platform. Consoles can crash, freeze, stick and slow-down like computers, but it happens a hell of a lot less often. You also never have to install console games, and consequently you never have to uninstall them. Plus, you don't have to upgrade consoles, everything the game needs is automatically within the casing. I know I'd rather pay £300 every four years than fork out several hundred every few months for a PC upgrade.

But, of course, whatever's best for you.

With regards to Oddworld? PlayStation, most definitely. Oddworld was barely promoted for PC at all.

PC upgrades aren't that much these days, in fact the prices are always steadily dropping. You can also get a lot of bang for your buck these days, you just gotta know where to shop.

Several hundred pounds every few months for an upgrade? What are you upgrading lol? But I endorse your point about installing and un-installing, that used to be a concern for me when hard drives were wafer thin.

I guess me being a die hard computer fan is a result of the lesson I have been taught...

Consoles I once owned:

Sega Master System
Sega Master System 2
Nintendo Enteratinment System
Super Nintendo Entertainment SYstem
Sega Mega Drive
Sega Saturn
Playstation
Nintendo 64

Ahhh faithful computer

I thought that's how much upgrades were... my first computer was fairly bottom-of-the-range, and cost £1000, second hand - 150MB RAM, 1GB hard drive, Windows 98. Since then, I've wormed my way up to 350MB RAM, 4GB hard drive, and Windows 98 SE. I'm told that's pathetic, and I don't know how much it cost. :p

And since practically the only game I use the computer for is Pocket Tanks Deluxe, I'm in no need of an upgrade. However, it would be nice if, when I do borrow games, I could actually see the movies rather than juddering pixelated masses of garbage. And I have a 100MB video file on here that won't play because I haven't got the latest 'codec'. Actually I have. Maybe the file's just corrupt and I need to download it again.

And what's up with .avi files that only have audio content? It's very annoying not being able to play them in WinAmp.

Aren't computers fun...

Forbidden Paradise 08-28-2003 07:47 AM

Hmmmm I'm not quite sure of the current exchange rates but your current computer would ring in at about $300-$500 Australian dollars, depending on the type of CPU (processor) you have. To do a basic upgrade (average everything) would set you back about $400, and that only needs to be done once every 2 years if your not fussy (unlike moi!)

Hey don't worry - i started out with a measly Pentium I 166Mhz, 24Mb RAM and 2.5 Gig HD!!! Now that I have a proper job I'm ahead of the rest (Pentium IV, 1Gig RAM, 200 Gig HD, ATI Radeon 9800 3D card etc. etc.!).

About your file that won't play - don't do anything except downloading a DIV X player. Has all the latest codecs and will play anything. Especially with AVI files that have no image, that definitely means you don't have the right codec. Hope that helps

Computers are fun :D

Wil 08-28-2003 08:09 AM

I did download the latest Div X, and it still won't play, so I'm pretty sure either the file itself got corrupted somehow, or that it's corrupted at the source. I'm downloading a lower quality version right now. The .avi file is a different file. But thanks for the advice.

I just wish I could afford something like this: http://www.alienware.com/system_pages/area-51.aspx

I'have all the versions,but not MO:fuzsad:
and I prefer pc gameplay...

Xavier 08-30-2003 10:38 AM

welcome on the forums Vlam, I hope you will have a great time here...

I also prefer pc gameplay :fuzwink:

Forbidden Paradise 08-30-2003 10:47 AM

I always go by the old saying "games are developed on computers, so what better platform to play them on: computers!

You can also edit/make more levels with code!

Vlam 08-30-2003 11:06 AM

Xavier----) thank you:)

forbidden paradise----) but in the pc version ,you cannot have the cheat to be invisible like the ps version's.....
(excuse me for my bad english:eek: )

Forbidden Paradise 08-30-2003 11:39 AM

I was talking about games in general, but you are correct. I don't like cheating, they ruin the gameplay and always put you off from trying your best. But I've always wondered what it would be like playing AE and not worrying about sligs/scrabs/paramites/fleeches etc.
