I don't think they dropped it, I think they just had him called by his last name like footballers and writers

At first, I found it strange that an Oddworld character could have a first name and a surname, specially Gabittis, but I thought Latamire Munch was a cool name to a Gabbit creature. Until today, I've never asked myself what's the meaning of Munch's name. Because of this topic, I made a little research at www.dictionary.com and I found really interesting informations.
I started with the word latamire, and after some related words, I found this:

family Latimeridae: extinct except for the coelacanth.

genus Latimeria: type genus of the Latimeridae: coelacanth.

And most interesting,
Latimeria chalumnae: fish thought to have been extinct since the Cretaceous Period
but found in 1938 off the coast of Africa.

coe·la·canth (sl-knth): Any of various mostly extinct fishes of the order Coelacanthiformes, known
only in fossil form until a single living species, Latimeria chalumnae
of African marine waters, was identified in 1938.

Based on these informations, we can guess that the second Oddworld Quintology hero's name was inspired by a real almost extinct family fish, expect for one single species, named Latimeria chalumnae, commonly know as coelacanth.

Continuing with my little research, I found these sites:

Coelacanth: fish out of time

This part is particularly interesting:
The Coelacanth was rediscovered in 1938 in the warm, coastal waters of the Indian Ocean.[...]Fourteen years went by before anybody saw the Coelacanth again. This time, a visiting fisherman pulled it in off the coast of Madagascar. The local fishermen there are very familiar with the Coelacanth. They told scientists that they catch it in their nets all the time.

What is a coelacanth?

The coelacanth

Why Latimeria?
Smith named the fish Latimeria chalumnae in honor of Miss Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer (the curator at the East London Museum, South Africa) who had spotted it and taken the time to preserve it.

This is the most complete site about the fish out of time that i found:

dinofish.com-COELACANTH: The Fish Out of Time

the coelacanth: his mouth resembles Munch's mouth a lot!

Adult female:

fetal "pup":

Now it is clear to me that OWI used the coelacanth as a reference to Munch's story. Go take a look at the links above and tell me what you think. :)

thats one big fish I probably would looked it up why did you think it ment anything?

Lantra 12-02-2001 01:38 PM

thats really cool lampion. i always thought latamire was an actual name.

Lampion 12-02-2001 04:13 PM

just a puzzle game:

L A T I M E R I A..C H A L U M N A E

Changing the position of a few letters, and eliminating some of them, you got:

LATIMERIA -> LATAMERII -> LATAMIIRE -> LATAMI RE -> LATAMIRE

CHALUMNAE -> ALUMNCHAE -> MALUNCHAE -> M UNCH -> MUNCH

our heroe's name: Latamire Munch.

Xavier 12-03-2001 02:42 PM

it's hard to belive it! Can someone ask alf if it's the true origin of the name ?

Eibu 12-03-2001 04:29 PM

Latamire is a "real" name (I think it's Russian) but the explanation given makes a lot of sense, the puns are fantastic...at first I didn't like the name Latamire for Munch but now that I know this I give it more respect...

I wonder what Gabbit sushi would taste like?

oddite4456 12-04-2001 01:57 AM

Whoa. I never thought Oddworld and the coelacanth would have a relation to each other! Either it's a coincidence or OWI spends alot of time on names.

Lampion 12-04-2001 03:25 AM

Yeah, I strongly believe that this cannot be a coincidence :).

Actually, Oddworld games have many, many other references to historical facts, social behavior, and environment. All the Oddworld creatures, for instance, although look unique, still are strongly inspired by actual creatures we know. There are the obvious ones, like the similarities between the Oddworld's scrab and the "Our world" crab, but there are also the more subtle connections, that we don't see at the first sight...

Alcar 12-04-2001 04:54 AM

I also noticed others:

Scrabs- Crabs
Paramites- Mites
Slogs- Dogs
Sloggies- Doggies/Puppies
Fleech- Leech
Mug- Bug
Meetle- Beetle
Meep- Sheep

There are probably more, but these are the most obvisous

Alcar 12-04-2001 05:01 AM

If you find any more, please tell me.

Ifind them interesting for some reason...

ok, i'll be quiet now

Oddipus 12-04-2001 09:26 AM

Alcar, we looked for other explanations in this topic.

It's obvious OWI puts a lot off effort in finding appropriate names for there species and characters.

Eibu 12-04-2001 11:49 AM

I just thought of another "coincidence"...

Abraham Lincoln (the U.S. President during the Civil War era) is known as the "Great Emancapator", the freer of slaves, hmm.

Honest ABE...
