Mysterious Sligs
There are just a few things which puzzle me about sligs.
Okay, so we have the slig mask with the red visuals. I assume they are visual enhancers, but doesnt red usually represent "thermal detectors." Or maybe even night vision, I remember looking at the concept art for the flying slig on the official oddworld website, and I think there was something mentioned in their about the WWII styled goggles they wear offering night vision. They were red. So does that mean sligs have night vision as well? If they do have night vision and/or thermal detection, wouldn't they be able to see Abe hiding in the various shadow zones around Oddworld? Another thing very few people might have noticed are the sligs with the shotguns. Remember in AO, where Abe gets smacked out by the slig's gun butt? Later when they are dragging his butt in, the slig following the two who have Abe has a shotgun! And in AE, in one of movies where Abe has entered the train, the train whizzes past a slig on a "lookout point" who has a shotgun as well! Where are these double barelled sligs in the game?!?! One final thing to add is why don't worker class sligs and flying sligs get along. We all know (I hope you do) that when Abe posesses a slig on the same screen as another slig, the other slig knows and tries to kill you (posessed slig). But Sligs can talk to each other on most screens (early game) after that. Flying sligs are always shot at, no matter where you go. Is this some sort of rivalry to do with rank (obviously flying sligs = higher rank)? Maybe its a way the developers stop you from flying all over the place killing sligs and making the game easier:fuzgrin: |

2: Every Slig has those guns, they aren't really shotguns or machine guns. As I know that Sligs use machine gun like firing weapons. The guns you refer to Sligs having are called Blunderbuss, and are basically a mix I guess. 3: Flying Sligs are higher in rank than a normal working class Slig. It probably is the rivalry, as for a Slig to shoot another Slig you usually have to have possessed that Slig in the line of sight of the other Slig. And, welcome to the Oddworld Forums! Alcar... |
The first shadow zones in AE however were in Necrum Burial Grounds, which to my knowledge spans across numerous caves and caverns underground.
From it's appearance and from background images throughout the game there appears to be no presence of sunlight whatsoever seeping through. The sligs would be able to see him in the shadows wouldn't they? But im not sure what effect the mine lighting would have on the night vision goggles, if thats what they're wearing. The majority of slig barracks however has gameplay outside, so they would definitely be blinded. |
Well the only reason I think sligs couldn't see you in the dark with their night vision goggles is because
A. They are probabally not night vision. or B. Since sligs have room tempeture IQ'S they wouldn't notice Abe sneaking in and out of shadows because Abe is being really stelthy and quite smart enough to get past a stupid slig. In the Stock Yards its at night and the sligs can't see Abe in those shadows but when he steps out of them in the moon light bam. My guess they are night vision visors but their view really sucks. You ever put on a helmet with a visor similar to that of a slig? The view really sucks. I know this because my friend has a bunch of Star Wars helmets and let me tell ya the view from inside the helmet of a Storm Trooper really and absolutly sucks. I could hardly see a thing but at least I could see sort of. Maybe the slig's Eye ware is similar to that where they can hardly see out of their visors and goggles which is my guess and can explan why they can't see Abe with night vision some times. |
Sorry this is moderator job:
Forbidden Paradise, please find another banner, the picture in your signature is a way to big, please read our rules |
Maybe...
Maybe their eyes just suck behind that mask and can only see in light(ex:moonlight, sun ect.)

the blunderbuss...is a very strange weapon. it either takes a magazine in the handel or a dorsal magasine like the FN P90. and it is pumped to cock, which would onhly really make sence if the magazine was dorsal like, whick i suppose it is. i have been studing the weapons of oddworld for a while. do ya think i should post a topic on how i think they work and stuff?
|
Wow, bumping an old topic!
I wanted to bring up the shotgun issue myself, but I first searched the forum for it (yay me!), and found this. Close-ups of Sligs in AO and AE reveal that ALL worker Sligs carry the same weapon. It may be a "Blunderbuss" (thanks Alcar), but it's way too similar to an Earth shotgun to throw this away. And while it IS a shotgun, it FIRES like an assault rifle. One of these MUST be untrue, because: -it fires like a machinegun, so it's a machinegun -it looks like a shotgun, so it's a shotgun -when a Slig in AE is ordered to "do it" without any actions being available, he reloads the gun. The Slig then inserts SHELLS into the gun (not BULLETS or CLIPS) -there is a HANDGUARD on the gun. Most shotguns have one, and all machineguns lack one -the barrel is very broad and short. The former is rare among machineguns and common among shotguns, the latter usually indicates a sawn-off shotgun (you don't usually saw off machineguns) I admit the gun looks unusually cool on the Sligs, but couldn't this be a developer mistake?? |
I like to think it's a kind of machinegun with the power of a shotgun, with a totally oddworld way to function...
|
Is it necessarily a machine gun. It may be some sort of semi-automatic, that can fire a few shots rapidly then needs to reload. Take into account that if you possess a slig and fire a gun, it doesn't fire a continual spray, but rather a rat-atat-tatt
|
Well it looks like a continual stream, but fired not very rapidly (about 300-350 rounds per minute). Did anyone notice some sligs, mostly sligs in the background, pack machineguns that fire almost three times as fast? And it certainly doesn't have the power of a shotgun, merely a heavy calibre...
|
My knowledge on guns are real bad, so I'll let the people who know about guns go on and talk about the "Blunderbuss"...
Here's the confirmation on the stuff of flying sligs and worker sligs. :
As for the night/inhancement the site says WWI goggles and that the Big Bro sligs have the night vision goggles and gas mask. |
In the oddworld inhapitats art book there is a picture of a naked big bro slig and there probably is one in TOGG somewhere to. as for guns, they are odd and differnent but i recken they are both machine guns and shot guns.
|
right, there are pictures over there.

 Okay is that what a naked Slig looks like, always wanted to see them without their helmets.
Looking at the picture from Xavier's cool Togg site picture of the Big Bro Slig show me why Sligs need those helmet/masks, which in my opinion make Sligs more look more evil and menacing, I guess for better vision too (those eyes don't look like they can see anything at all.) That's it I'm going to get that Oddworld art book no matter what it takes. |
It's a good investment, man. I've spent hours poring over that book.
Here's where you get it from: http://www.ballisticpublishing.com/books/oddworld/ |
Never knew there was an art book. Looks good! Fun to see that such badasses as Sligs actually are pathetic worms, too.
|
I'm planning to do some advertising for the Book on TOGG...
but I'm not yet sure how |
:
|
slig's must carry an oddworld weapon because in AO when shoot you right next to you the gun is slow but when you enter thr scarabanian temples it starts off by avoiding the sligs in the background shooting you but theyre 10 times faster what's up with that
