Odd Humor?

I thought to myself yesterday after playing Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee; "hmm...this game is alot darker than I remeber it being..". It got me thinking....after I played AE for awhile..it hit me, the humor in the games evolved...The humor in AO is of a dark nature....macabre...While in AE..its very much playfull in some sense, even though it still carries a bit dark tone. Anyone wish that the game had stayed with the dark, death like surroundings and humor....or glad that it moved on to a less seroius, more comical taste of humor? Expand. :D

Anyway, I've met some of you in Oddchat. Im the new guy, just wanted to say hi with a new thread that I HOPE nobody else has started before. So hi to everyone I haven't met! :)

Kaimana 10-22-2002 07:19 PM

lol:lol: Well I like the dark tone to AO...and I wish that it had stayed that way through out the other two games. However humor was always there too:D So either way, Oddworld does have a very serious history to it, and future, and yet the humor always kicks in:p Wich is good for comedic relief.

Also welcome to OWF MF:) Enjoy yourself.

I am a firm believer that Oddworld needs to return to its darker nature as soon as possible. The biggest problem I had with MO was that it had started to try and attract new fans by being 'cool'. It's latched on to popular catchphrases (One up! Yeah, whatever...), put stereotypes and more familiar images in place of interesting characters (the Glukkons, Paramites and Scrabs), and tries to get the player involved by having characters look at the camera in bemusement instead of having something we truely feel sympathetic for.

Not to say that Oddworld can't be light at places, it should just stop trying to be something it's not.

And welcome to the Oddworld Forums, MindFlare.

True. Did Abe actually turn to the camera in AO & E?

sO fReAkIn oDd 10-22-2002 08:34 PM

Yea, I always thought MO lost some of the dark humor that existed in the original game. I hope the next game is better.

Jacob 10-22-2002 08:47 PM

I think the intro is the darkest part of the game. Were the Vykkers pick up Munch, that is very well done.

MindFlare 10-22-2002 10:30 PM

Well...It gave me and odd (no pun intended) sensation when AO first came out. By being so dark..and demented the game hooked me right off. However, the game still finds humor in what normaly woudn't be funny. For instance, the news ticker in the background, sometimes has funny little reminders from the corporate office!

Mac the Janitor 10-22-2002 10:30 PM

Yeah, I really was attracted to the games by the darkness and and creativity. I really wish they would go back to that.

I agree with your lil' paragraph there, Max. They were trying a bit too hard to be cool. I call 'em poser games.

Examples:

"Dude, whatsup with that."

"kiss my ass!"

"Hey, what's happenin' Abe!"

"Piss off!"

"Does it smell in here or did yer momma walk in?"

"I'm gonna need me an ass the size of a truck to fit this wallet!" (fairly amusing, but still...poser game!)

And yeah, Chris, I thought the beginning sequence was done quite well, too.

MindFlare 10-23-2002 12:46 AM

Well, I've never played MO...so I have no idea what its like...but being out in nature...and the way the nature looks on some of the screens..didn't intrest me much at all. In oddworld, I dont wanna see green landscapes and earth like surroundings....I wanna see necrum..and rupture farms...and dimly lit tribal grounds...something to shock...and at the same time interest. I want more AO. :(

Kesiah 10-23-2002 01:22 AM

Mo is ok, I enjoyed the little movie sequences a lot, but some areas like where the Glukkons were cutting down trees and stuff could have been done better. Ahhh...I'm sure OWI will dazzle us with the next game, live and learn people.

Hi again MF!

he did... at the beggining of the exoddus. (when he killed the blind mud)

Alcar 10-23-2002 04:06 AM

I also believe that Oddworld should return it's games to the original dark humour. I'm sure they will though, as many people I hear from here and through email have said so to OWI.

I just think that MO was a major rush to get it out for a launch title. I'm sure there next game will be much of an improvement.

You'll also notice that I didn't say "ME" as the next game, as we don't know for sure if it is!

good alcar... good :fuzwink:

M.O.M 10-23-2002 03:23 PM

Dark humour should return in any other games, Sadistic but funny!

souled out 10-24-2002 12:56 AM

if the squaresoft has taught me anything, its that you go for STORY first and foremost. the dark side of the story was that tragic sad side that made the game sell. i would give up a skateboarding mud for watching a gabbit have its neck stepped on by a viker any day, not because i like to see gabbits hurt, but because its a sad brutal truth that innocents get hurt in the way of someone elses progress.

Xavier 10-24-2002 03:18 AM

so true... nothing more to add

I always thought that he said " is it small in here or did yer momma walk in?"

mudflub2 10-25-2002 01:28 PM

Hi, um, guy!

I think that munch was direct at a more action audience.

Seeya!!!!!!!

Wil 10-25-2002 01:49 PM

I think it was directed at a younger audience. There's nothing as dark or spooky as there were in the first games, the humour is a lot simpler, and even bad language is censored.

Xavier 10-25-2002 04:24 PM

plus it's rated "Teen"...

yes it's more chilish than before

souled out 10-25-2002 05:45 PM

the teen rating says "moms this is ok to buy for your kids since its not as bad as M for mature" give it up for half-assed parenting-

Xavier 10-25-2002 06:02 PM

do you think the first 2 games where rated "Teen" or "Mature"?
I gess it was to hard to be teen

M.O.M 10-26-2002 06:09 AM

more dark humour

More dark humour, sure there was sum in MO but it needs more!!!:fuzblink: :fuzblink: :fuzblink: :fuzzle: :fuzzle: :fuzzle:

Xavier 10-26-2002 11:31 AM

MOM, there was NO dark humor in MO, only chilish humor

Wil 10-26-2002 11:57 AM

No, but MO did have some excellent dark parts. Namely, the opening sequence and the bad ending. A lot of the rest seemed quite dry and sterile, but there were very good bits.

Xavier 10-26-2002 12:01 PM

dark humor in the opening scene? hmmm I didn't found it "funny"

Alcar 10-26-2002 12:05 PM

I think he means were Munch is all alone, and while he is speaking he makes his plite sound funny in a way, which it isn't. Poor Munch :fuzsad:

Anyways, I'm being a real bastard at the moment for conquest in AO and AE, I'm killing those poor Mudokons just to get the Black Ending! I should shoot myself, thankgod I'm regreting each one I well... accidentally kill.

Alcar...

Xavier 10-26-2002 12:11 PM

I got that feeling too when I try to get the black quarma :fuzsad: I'm glad to see I'm not the only one

I was careful not to include 'funny' in that. I wasn't refering to dark and funny bits of MO, there aren't any.
