&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp I recently replied to a cry for help regarding Oddchat in Off Topic. Here is what I responded with; it is a general fix for people who have problems accessing Oddchat.

Here's what I wrote:

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Seems to me that if something like the java-based Oddchat is not working, you either have a firewall such as Norton Personal Firewall, Norton Internet Security, McAfee Personal Firewall, ZoneAlarm, or other such installed on your computer.

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp The first thing I would check is the Java settings in your browser. If you are using Internet Explorer, click "Tools", and then "Internet Options". Click the "Security" tab at the top. Near the bottom, you will see a box that says "Security level for this zone." Click the "Custom Level" button. Scroll down the list to "Microsoft VM / Java Permissions" and make sure that "Disable Java" is not selected. I recommend "High security" or "Medium security". Click OK on all the windows, and then try again!

I hope this helps anyone with Oddchat problems...Also those who have trouble it seems Oddling got in..why dont you try Oddchat now and see what happens:fuzsmile:

It seems that perhaps the java based chat client may not work for all. This could be related to your browser, or other issues.

One alternative if you cannot run the java (internet) based client, is to try downloading a program such as mIRC. There are many IRC based chat programs which you can use to connect to OddChat available for free from sites such as www.download.com

Instructions for configuring these clients can be found in the OddChat help at http://www.oddworld.au.com/oddchat/help.htm.

Eventually we would like to get another kind of chat room for OddChat, that is perhaps more user friendly and has more features. But it's a matter of finding a good free (or at least low cost) one that isn't filled with ads.

Abe Babe...

Yes thats a good idea Abe Babe and thank you for your help...If anyone still has problems please post here:fuzsmile:

-Thank you, Kai

ok, so I'll post my problem here.
I keep getting a 'proxy sever' error when I try to enter Oddchat, but I am not on a school network, my settings are configured as Pilot has suggested above, and I have no know programs running that cause firewalls. I have also found that mIRC also shows the same error when I try to access though it.
But the strange thing is that if I delete my cookies for this site then try Oddchat, it lets me in!
Does anyone have an idea of what this could be, or is it just my stupid PC?

Okay, here's my prob:

Whenever I try Oddchat, the page will load except for da little Oddchat box. At the bottom of my screen, it says "Applet Error: Closing." Wassup wit dat, home fries?!

Applets are basically a Javascript program.

Try what Justin posted earlier :)

I tried that and it still doesn't work. Dangit.

I couldn't find the "Custom Level" or "Microsoft VR/ Java Permissions" things. I found some other preferences that I thought might be useful, changed them appropriately, and it still says it.

Help!

Okay. My prob is I can't type nothin' in the oddchat. The oddchat frame is okay, I mean I could still see oddchat help, oddworldian, ETC. But, the chat box is blank and grey. and at the left hand corner is well, a small box thingy with three shapes....Yes.. I did do what Pilot suggested...and yet it still wont let me in.
~sigh~ I really need the help!!

Alcar 08-29-2002 08:56 PM

Then I recommend downloading mIRC from www.mirc.com

If you do download it, tell me and i'll give you the details to join the Oddchat server.
