We need more controversy!
What happened to these forums? Nobody is really pissed off anymore. Not the angry kind o, but the riled up, adrenalin soaked feeling, you know? No factions, fightings, swearing, vulgar images, irate Pms, name calling, petty arguments, hair pulling, ad nauseam. This place has lost its spunk. I propose a new member every week will be tagged as the Controversy Cow(you'll get that if you watch Conan) It will be his job every week to create a crazy topic. It won't be called the controversy cow topic though, it will be totally anonomous. Embryos anyone? Anything hinting of the Bible? Mac versus Microsoft? Hatfields versus Mccoys? Which is the best video game system, perhaps? Determinism or free will? What is love? Your Mom jokes about each others moms? Democrats versus republicans. Industry versus environment! Animal testing. It will be great. Mass hysteria, biblical prosphesyies coming true CATS AND DOGS SLEEPING WITH EACH OTHER! Thus we will have a really messed up forums, more fun, more stuff to got hot and bothered about. But we can always keep the Which Scooby Doo character are you? kind of polls, the fan art, the fan stories, the look what I found on the Internet thing, and the joyful "We are family" kind of vibe that you and I all know and love at the forums. Because I have had about all of this forums dryness as I kind. I would go and raise bloody hell at The Glass Asylum but I can't use those friggin' ezboards.

I doesent seem that way anymore. I don't know! It seems things have really calmed down in the last two weeks.

Yes i liked the fights as well (as i used to normally be the cause of them) But i don't like that idea. Calling some one that because they are new. I think it is a disgrace to the oddworld forums staff.
But I do miss the fights. And the adrenilin. (Hopefull that will change because of me and molluck and our ideas) because we would like to set up (prior to the consent of the RPG moderator) a battle zone where you let off steam. But untill then we will have to have discussion fights in intresting topics like 'Youth jailed for vampire ritual' Where we said our views and battled thm out. And other such topics. Also the oddworld forums hve calmed down considrably since sydney left and many people have been trying to get us back in union. But aftr that is all cleared i am sure we shall live in a better forums age, where all that is possible. Thank you or listening to my views. Rex tirano |
I totally agree!! Mainly cos im the Queen of Qontroversy (Does that look good? Or are 'Kween of Kontroversy' , 'Cueen of Controversy' is better?)

Statikk, why can't you visit the Asylum? It seems strange that your computer wont let you in. What exactly happens when you visit the Asylum's address? Maybe it can be overcome.
It's a shame you currently can't join us. Not trying to sound patronising, but you were one of the members who contributed to the esence of the old forums. :D |
Nothing wrong with heated debates. But they're like weeds. They don't look too bad to start with, but if they aren't killed off you end up with a garden full of their ugliness.

Sure are fun though!!

Debates in themselves are fine, but what used to go on at OWF is that people would start getting nasty towards someone who they did not agree with, and even question their beliefs. I saw this happen many times, and it was one of the main reasons myself and Justin would always steer clear of controversial subjects.
We live in a world where we can all have our own views, but we shouldn't need to be subjected to being put down because our views differ from others. The new staff of OWF hope to make this a place where people can discuss their views on any subject without having to fear the wrath of someone who's views are different. Abe Babe... |
But when somebody proposes a better solution to an argument, or at least one that you can't refute - isn't the greater problem that people aren't willing to change their own views?
If you've gone to the trouble of forming beliefs rather than just assuming the common ground, you've got brains enough to defend those views. Making fun of somebody because of their opinions is just rude, and there needs to be a degree of civility in most arguments - but I don't get this idea of having to respect everybody's views as valid if they can't back them up. There's a middle ground between beliefs like 'most of us are good people' and 'fly planes into major economic/symbolist structures and kill thousands FOR GREAT JUSTICE' - and if we don't start questioning and debating views on this level then the crazy stuff becomes more prevalent. We had a debate earlier this year about Australia's asylum seeker policy, during which some people here openly supported a complete distrust of certain people based on their nationality. Justify that. If you just sit back and say 'well I'm entitled to my own beliefs' then it's fine if the consequences are nonexistent. But we actually don't live in a vacuum, so maybe questioning such beliefs more frequently might actually have a beneficial effect. |
Hi Luxo...
What you are refering to is fine. A good argument or debate can and should go back and forth with both people/groups pointing out their views and providing a counter argument. I was simply refering to those who like to put down or get nasty towards one who thinks differently, or straight out say "you're wrong" without providing grounds for discussion. I agree, the majority of the time people will stick to their opinion ... very few times is their opinion swayed. Although I do recall a forum topic that myself and Jacob participated in recently, where we had our own differing opinions, but after the discusson ended we both kept our own views while still being able to acknowledge and accept the other persons. That's a respectful discussion. Abe Babe... |
Yeah, directly insulting somebody because "they think chinese is better than thai" when you prefer thai is just wrong :(
