Or Fireflies as most would know them
But in Abe's Oddysee they were very helpful to Abe. They spelt out words to tell Abe where to go. But what's the deal with them. Do they work as a collective unit or is someone/something controlling them. Because Abe chants and they turn into spelling bees, but they shouldn't be able to be that helpful.

They work by the will of Odd.

They must be freinds of the Muds and when ever Abe chants to them it sounds like music and they dance by spelling out words.

Isn't the chanting directly related to Odd? I think when Abe chants, Odd tells the fireflies what to do. They in turn tell Abe where to go... Kinda like tapping into fate itself, I guess.

i had forgotten about the fireflies. are there fireflys in AE or just AO?

just AO, but they were in MO, and yet they did nothing.:(

maybe the chanting is intended to oblige them to give us infos.
or just Spirits that manifest through the flies, and the spirits "talk" and not the flies
