Sligs in Dune
For those of you familiar with the book series Dune by Frank Herbert this should be interesting.
In book five, The Heretics of Dune sligs are mentioned. According to Herbert they are obscene, slow crawling creatures which resemble a cross between a pig and a slug. They have multiple mouths and eat almost any garbage fed to them. And they have good tasting meat. I don't know if Lorne Lanning realized this or not but the oddworld slig was borrowed from the popular sci-fi book series. |
Hmm, sounds interesting. They're actually called sligs? Do you have any pics of them?

Like most novels, the Dune books don't have pictures in them. Sorry. That would be interesting though.
And yes they actually call them sligs and on multiple occasions. They are spelled s-l-i-g-s. |

2) Coincidence? Maybe... EDIT: I have come very close to reading these books. Many of my friends have suggested them to me. But for now, I'll just finish reading Shadow of the Hegemon. It's good, but I don't like it as much as Ender's Shadow... -Mac |
Wow, are you shure he borrowed it from Oddworlds Sligs Khanz?
|
No. Frank Herbert is no longer alive so he couldn't have. I'm saying that Mr. Lanning probably got the name slig from the book.
|
its also possible that people came up with the same idea just the second one was years later.
|
This soudns formiliar. I read once some of the Halo content 9for instance the Flood) was taken from books, somewhat combining different sci-fi things with new ideas. I wouldn't be suprised.

interesting
I am familiar with the books, I have them in my room right now.
Could you tell me the chapter or page Khanz? The funny thing is, I had decided to reread the series about a day before you posted this.... :dodgy: EDIT: Perhaps Lorne read the series once when he was younger and the name occured to him much later, a vauge memory thrown up from some time ago. That could be an explaination |
It's on page 171 of the fith book.
And yes, the vague memory thing is likely. I thought the "Switch" was an original name for a cyborg character I had created... then I learned I had heard it from The Matrix. |
Hedley
I've discovered another Oddworld-Dune crossover. There is a character named Hedley in Dune which is quite an uncommon name (at least where I live). Hedley is also the name of the vykker auctionere in MO.
Not much, I know... but combined with the slig thing it makes you wonder huh? Please share any other similar things you have found in movies, books, etc... |
The Headley in Oddworld is spelt with an 'a', but it does make an interesting coincidence.
I may be wrong, but I think there was a similar connection with Sligs and something else. It'll be buried under mountains of General Discussion posts, but I distinctly remember it (without remembering anything about it, though). But then there's always these sorts of things. It's quite uncanny. |
