Growing up; Babies

*Setting: A white room, a creché to be exact. The room isn't that large. Around 7 ft in height and 9-10 in width. Inside the room are glass incubators, 12 to be precise. Little babies are inside, around 4-5 weeks old. Orkhid children grow fast and thus are always being monitered by some Scientist or Doctor for abnormalities.*

Footsteps echoe down the corridor, electronic doors open and close, and talking ensues. The babies are the embryo's that were once entrapped in the glass tubes. Now free of their confinement they are stuck in glass incubators instead. Their tiny hands and tiny feet push up against their confinement as if trying to break out.

Voice: "Ahhh, babies(!)"

The voice was shrill and full of joy, it was one of the newer Scientists who liked to come in and entertain them a while. His eccentricity did usually make them laugh and giggle, their eyes lighting up as they forgot were they where and focused on this strange Orkhid's antics. His hair was dark brown with blonde streaks, his eyes a beautiful green and his face was round and plump. It was perculier to see such a Orkhid, usually the obeise or slightly over weight babies were killed almost straight away. But he wasn't...for some reason. The Orkhid leant forwards over one of the containers, smiling his sweet smile to one of the female babies.

Scientist: "Baby!! And how are you today? I hope you are well."

He tapped the container with a sausage like finger and the baby giggled, grabbing her feet with her tiny hands. Burbling a short reply and then laughing in her baby tone of voice.

Scientist: "Good. We do not want you upset now do we babies!!"

The others responded by googling and patting their glass prisons. The Scientist walked around each container, talking to the critter inside for 2 mins and making them feel loved. Something they would never experience with the other Dr's or Scientists. Finally he had got round all 12, they were all situated around the room, in a circular way so it was easier for the Scientist to get to them. Moniters displayed their vitals and all of them seemed to be in top form.

Scientist: "Ok, i have a surprise for you babies!! Do you want it? Or should i go into the next creché and show them?"

He rubbed his hands together, they were sweaty and so finally he rubbed them on his white coat. The babies laughed and waved their appendages around for abit. As if to say "Surprise, show us the surprise!!".

Scientist: "Ok, ok!! I shall show!!"

He held his hands up in a denfensive way as if to be truly surprised by their reaction. Trudging along to the exit he then poked his head out of the room and checked to make sure no guards or other personal was about. He then reached into his coat and pulled out a little black box. It was like a tape player, but it was able to be stuck to things.

Scientist: "Babies...this is our secret though, ok? You tell no-one!!"

He giggled and switched it on, sticking it to a wall just above one of the moniters, the babies were in awe of what it produced. Their burblings stopped and instead they stared wide eyed at what the Scientist was doing in time with the sound of the box.

Scientist: "It is music babies...music!!"

He was dancing to the song 'Your Unbelievable' by EMF. Miming the words with a black pen he kept in his top pocket. The small Orkhids laughed, tears rolling down some of their eyes. Their small palms clapping together as he jiggled his body in such a amusing way. The Scientist then pretended to play the guitar, turning around to all the containers so they could all see him. Changing dances he then started to pretend to be a robot, moving in a robotic jerky way. He lived for this, making minors laugh was one of the rewarding parts of his job, even though it was frowned upon by the other personal.

Voice: "WVHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE!?"

The babies laughter turned into sudden squeaks of fear as they realised who's booming voice had cut through the music like a knife through butter. The Scientist stopped in the middle of his movements, his face turning from happiness to fear and regret.

Voice: "CORNISH...WVHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS!?"

Scientist: "Its Cornesh, sir. And i thought it might cheer the children up fro..."

He was interupted by the Doctor. Unlike the others this one wore a pair of elbow length black gloves. His face clean shaven and his cold Grey eyes like a Hawks. He moved forwards, his ankle length lab coat flailing through the air. Cornesh was holding the black 'mircophone' in his hand still, he tried to explain but everytime he opened his mouth he got hushed by the Orkhid.

Doctor: "Cornesh...you are a Scientist. Your target in life is not to amuse experimental SUBJECTS."

He emphasised that they were not babies but subjects to be poked and prodded, he also turned his head and looked at them all whilst saying it. Sneering at their terror filled eyes.

Doctor: "Your target is to make a more substantial race of Orkhid, a more perfect race. You do understand...dont you?"

He grasped the pen and pulled it away from Cornesh' grip.

Cornesh: "S-sir."

Doctor: "Good. Now, i am relieving you for the rest of the night. Return to your quaters immediatly(!) I'll take over from here."

He stood still as Cornesh stepped around him, his head held low he made a bee-line for the exit. The babies gurgled amongst themselves. The female child whom Cornesh spoke to first didn't make a sound however, but merely stared. Stared at the creature who had shouted at her friend. And then she cried, the shrillest and ear popping cry you have ever heard. Closely followed by the rest of the room...and then the rest of the corridor...

Quite nice. I'm still trying to figure out what the &%¤¤ a orhkid actually looks like. But anyway. It's not so easy to keep up with ALL your stories, but one does the best one can do... Very nice, Jacob. Really.

Al the Vykker 05-26-2002 01:16 AM

I'd have to say Jacob this is probaly the first story of your's that I actually took the time and read, and I have to say Its really good! I can't wait to here more. Although its pretty amazing how many stories you have going, it must be hard sometimes to remember which one is which. ERR.. anyways keep up on this one.:)

Part 2

Cornesh: "Boo!! A Boo!! Yes...you cheeky little thing."

Cornesh giggled to himself, patting the little Orkhid girl gently on the nose with the tip of his finger. She was on top of a white counter her lower body wrapped in a black towel with the Red Orkhid symbol of Loyalty on, something you will hardly ever see these days.

Nurse: "Could you pass me the baby please, sir?"

The Nurse was female, her legs covered by her black trousers which seemed to clash nicely with her white lab coat. Her brown hair was tied back with a red bobble and her lips seemed to glow red against her whitey face.

Nurse: "Sir? The baby?"

She patted the Scientist on the shoulder with an extended arm, her index finger tipped with a bitten nail.

Cornesh: "Yes, yes...ok. But be gentle with her. She is special, she is clever...i've even given her a little name."

Cornesh smiled warmly as he picked up the little baby and passed her to the Nurse. The Nurse looked at him and sighed.

Nurse: "You know you arn't supposed to get too attached to them, they're experimental animals. One of three batches that actually got past the Foetus stage. This lot will be probed and prodded until the Dr's find out what made them grow with minor to no abnormalities. Well...none we can see at this early stage anyway."

She said this whilst gently putting the Orkhid child on a white baby mat. She smiled warmly at the child as it burbled and waved its hands in the air exitedly...giggling.

Nurse: "So...what you named her?"

She decided to lighten the tense atmosphere that she had created by reminding the overly-enthusiastic Scientist of the procedures the children were to go through.

Cornesh: "Aisha...pretty, no?"

Turning her head the Nurse nodded a brief second.

Nurse: "Very."

She then turned to her bag that she had recieved when she passed her nursing exam. Going through it, mumbling to herself she finally pulled out a little needle. The tip of it was razor sharp and the plunger had a round hole were you could place your thumb for maximum push.

Nurse: "Shhhhh, this will only sting a little. M'kay?"

Her attention was focused back on the baby. This time her voice was soft, trying to soothe the baby as its eyes were fixated on the needle that was slowly heading towards her arm. The pale Blue eyes of the critter seemed to get rounder in fear, switching from the needle to the Nurse and then back to the needle.

Cornesh: "Aisha...Aisha...look at me baby. Over here."

Clicking his fat little fingers the Orkhid tried to draw the childs attention away from the instrument. A strand of browny-blonde hair falted down his face, he quickly stuck it back down on his head with syliva and the palm of his hand.

Aisha: "Eep!!"

Her little voice warmed Cornesh' heart, she seemed to jump as she felt the twinge of the needle penetrate her skin and draw out a drop of blood. Her free arm tried to waft away the needle but failed.

Nurse: "All done...you were a good little girl wasn't you?"

The baby looked at her, her little face slowly crunching up. Her lower lip sticking out and her chin wobbling as she gradually started to cry.

Cornesh: "Ohhh, Aisha. Come here!!"

Picking up the little critter he hugged her, holding her close to his round body. Her arms clinging to his lab coat as her cries slowly melted down into whimpers and sniffles. The Nurse smiled and stroked the babies head.

Nurse: "She's starting to grow hair, soon we will see what she is like with a mop of hair won't we, eh?"

Her lips were close to the babies ear as she spoke softly to it. Stroking its naked back with her long, thin fingers.

Nurse: "Bless her. When she's settled down bring in the next one, k?"

Cornesh nodded and slowly moved towards the exit, bobbing the little child in a rythmic way. Encouraging her to sleep. Watching, the Nurse wished that someday she could have children. And hoped that she had a lover who was as nice and warm as Cornesh was. Shaking her head slightly, as if to disperse the thoughts, the staff member slowly poured out the DNA of the baby into a small tube. Placed it in a wooden case and closed the lid. Marking it with a permanent marker with the letters;

'DNA-CHK'

Before dabbing her eyes with a tissue and getting back to her job.

(OOC: Feedback...again, lol.)

Part 3

*Setting: 3 Scientists stood bickering at the recent discovery of their beloved project. The project that had cost them and their sponsors billions. They were in Sykes' office, his table towards the end of the room. His chair was behind the table and two other chairs were in front so that he could talk with who sat there more easily. A computer was one of many things that crowned his desk. Pencils, pens, bits of paper that held vital infomation about certain things. All very professional. And finally, at the back of the room was 3 moniters. Each flat and held up by a metal rod protruding from the floor. On one of these screens was the Consultant that he had discussed his experiment with before. In the room with Sykes was two other top Scientists that Sykes worked with, they helped and informed him of the babies progress and dabbled in some other projects too.*

The Scientists were confused, disturbed and sickened by what was happening. Out of the 30 Orkhid Embryo's that had progressed from the foetus stage 12 of them were defects.

Scientist #1: "This is OUTRAGEOUS!! I thought you said the donors were in top health and that there was no chance of defected foetus' growing!?"

The Scientist who had basically founded the idea was being flamed by his work collegues but also his boss'.

Sykes: "I-I thought that was the case!! Honestly, i swear. I dont know what could of hap..."

Scientist #1: "I do not care much for your excuses Sykes!! You have made a terrible mistake in not making sure that this project was a success. 12 of 30!! 12, 12 defects!! I cannot believe it."

The Scientist brushed back his dark hair and sank into the swivel chair that was behind him. Rubbing his face with his scarred hands.

Sykes: "It isn't my fault!! The donors...the donors, they must have falsified their records in so..."

Again Sykes was cut off.

Scientist #2: "Shat it, Sykes. Yau basically have screwed up ar whole project. Cost us billions you did, mate!!"

Stepping forwards the Orkhid cracked his fingers as he spoke. His voice common and slang, hardly understandable but still somewhat intimidating. He leaned forwards, placing his hands on the desk and staring Sykes straight in the eye with his dull brown eyes. He spat out more words of hatred.

Scientist #2: "Yau're f*cked, mate. We're gonna tell da good ole' council and see that yau're finished...far good."

Sykes voice got shrill and fear-filled. He turned to the moniter which was set up behind him. The Consultant was watching, bored of their bickering. He had not spoken and was yet to make a point.

Consultant: "S-S-Syyykes. Ahem. Sykes, you have c-cost the project and its spo-onsors billions. These creatures were supposed t-to be perfect. N-not one d-defect in the lot of them. O-Obviously you have forgot what we can do to you whilst you chased your dream of becoming the 'Greatest Scientist' ever known. I, infact, have a good m-mind to destroy all r-research that was performed and then have you k-killed."

The Orkhid Scientist stepped backwards, astonished by what had just been said. The Consultant was partially to blame also, but if he got murdered along with the evidence he could not testify to the Consultants part in this. Sykes opened his mouth to protest in dismay.

Consultant: "HOWEVER...however. S-Since we spent so much on something t-that could change the course of t-time. I believe we sh-should carry on with the animals that will be able to perform...the n-non defected one's. Is that f-f-fine by you, Mr Sykes?"

The first Scientist looked up, bringing his hands away from his face he stared at the screen in disbelief at what the Consultant was saying.

Sykes: "Yes...yes it is...thankyou, thankyou, sir!!"

Consultant: "G-Goood. I'll be looking fo-forward to your report in a wee-eeks time. Mr Fosters, Mr Maine."

The Consultant nodded to both of them, the moniter turning to face them as he addressed their names. The Scientists gave a shocked wave goodbye as the screen blackened. Sykes turned to Maine, the Scientist who was sat down.

Sykes: "Well...we're in the clear."

Maine: "For now...You better hope that all is well, Sykes. Because if its not...i swear down, i will kill you(!)"

He slowly stood up, adjusting his name tag.

Maine: "What do we do with the defects?"

Fosters turned away from them, rubbing the back of his neck with one hand he slowly padded around to the computer which stored all of the babies infomation.

Fosters: "Heh...we kill 'em."

He smiled to the two Scientists and turned the moniter. Leaning on it cockily he showed them the image that was screened. It was the baby Cornesh was so fond of. Aisha. Baby 1010v1. Now pictured with hair, short blonde hair. Something that basically indicated a disorder, a viral infection. Aids.

Part 4

Sykes: "Yes, immediatly."

Sykes was speaking to the Doctor who had relieved Cornesh the time he had caught him dancing for the babies. The Doctor seemed alot more calmer this time though, he wore no gloves and was alot less tense. They were situated in Sykes' office, the Doctor sat on one of the chairs which were available. He was leaning back on the seat, his arm stretched out to the desk which Sykes was sat at and his fingers drumming on the polished surface.

Doctor: "Wvhat is the reason, may i ask?"

Sykes seemed a little taken back by this question, the answer seemed immensly obvious.

Sykes: "Isn't it obvious, Janek? They're defects. Capable of nothing but shaming our race(!)."

Running a hand through his dark hair the Doctor merely smirked and then replied.

Janek: "But, technically they are not our race. If wve keep them alive, heh, and they stay alive. Wve could use them to test some of our wveapons on...no?"

He looked at Sykes, stared at him, eye to eye. The Grey eyes of Janek were like bullets when he had a plan. Sykes sat back and scratched the back of his head.

Sykes: "Its-Its a possibility. But Silak said to destroy all of the defects...kill them before anybody finds out wh..."

He was cut off.

Janek: "Yes, yes, yes. I'm sure he did say many things. But, are you not the founder? You should be the one wvho dictates wvhat and wvhat does not happen during this project. And also, you have me wvatching over things. Wvhat could go wrong, heh."

He smiled, revealing his dull grey gums. Sykes gave a faint smile and a thoughtful expression crossed his face.

Sykes: "I...I suppose you have a point. Well, well ok. Why not. However, if anything goes wrong. Even the minutest thing, im going to make sure you get the blame...is that clear?"

Slowly raising himself off of his seat Janek nodded. He held out a nail-bitten hand for Sykes to shake.

Janek: "Crystal."

They shook hands and then Janek made his way towards the door, stopping suddenly he turned to Sykes.

Janek: "You know, i could probably do more good and make sure things are going alot more smoothly if i was promoted."

The Scientists head turned to face the Doctor. A bemused expression on his face.

Sykes: "And what would you like to be promoted too, may i ask?"

Smiling the doctor stepped slowly towards Sykes.

Janek: "Nothing too major...something like...Consultant?"

Standing Sykes rolled his neck, small cracking sounds of the bones could be heared and then he slowly stepped around his desk to close in on the Doctor.

Sykes: "Deal."

The word was cold and yet thankful, Sykes' hand shot up to meet Janeks, and they both smiled. Knowing that they both will be getting something they want very much in the up and coming future.

~End~
