ExCUse me, but can you tell me how that blanket statement olf "drugs are bad" would work? Aspirin is bad, is it? And paracetamol? And phenytoin? And fluoxetine? And atenolol? And glipizide? And... ;)

Addicted? Nah. Nothing much happens these days that really, really grabs my attention... maybe I'm just getting old. It happened on the last forum I was at, too, I just... well, faded out, and I only visit once in a blue moon, now... Oh well. I still keep in touch with old friends, though, so I guess that's worth something.

One, Two, Middlesboogie 05-17-2002 07:14 AM

I used to be, but not now that it's overwhelmed by crap.

I am addicted to the GameHub (formerly PS2Hardcore) board, though.

Gluk Schmuck 05-17-2002 08:17 AM

I'm addicted to my social life and recreation. The Oddworld Forums is part of both of those.

What do you suggest we do to bring back the magic? I'm seriously wanting to hear ideas, as I don't want this place to detatch itself from old members.

Alcar 05-17-2002 10:27 AM

Too late, some (alot!) of old timers have left us. I haven'r seen ODDBODD around, and oddbodd.net is way out of date as for news etc.

I think that every forum looses its appeal after a while, or maybe the fact that so many people were stunned at the SoBe promo thing MO had included into it that they thought Oddworld was just another game...

As for suggestions...hmm a forum design change maybe?

Now that I'm back in business with my own internet connection, interest is somewhat fading as my importance as a chat-RP gamemaster resumes being... well... important, like.

So I could do without it. Esp' since I visit Letters To The Devil too... I'm not a messageboard person (anymore, I used to be, when InsideTheWeb.com was still alive)

Nice place though. Certainly more active than #dataclaw and the Terrascape board combines ;) But that's not hard *l*

Can't help you there unless you can go back in time and get rid of MO.

munchman 05-17-2002 06:51 PM

i go to the oddworld forums and oddchat at least once a day

Statikk HDM 05-17-2002 07:27 PM

I have been "smoking the oddworld since AO. And, One, Two, Middlsboogie, MO can't be that horrible can it. I want to play it but somehow I feel it will let me down. I anticipated that game since about 1996 for crying out loud!

Silversnow 05-17-2002 09:24 PM

That was a good question, hm hm hm...

Let me take it like this. This is basically the only place I talk to people that hasn't been knowing me for the last 7 years. Apart from school (horrible, just, horrible...) this is the only social life I have! Here, I don't have to think about if you talk to me to get money candy stuff or if anyone shouts things after me. I'm really addicted. Very. Extremely. If I couldn't go here, my speaking to myself times would grow rapidly. Sooner or later I would speak to myself in crowds, loudly, and after a while I might shout when I want to, laugh high at one of my jokes and stuff... Shortly, make me even more weird and stupid than what I already am. And after that, I guess I wouldn't have so many friends since I would be busy talking to all the elves and iceprincesses in my head.

Q. Addicted?
A. Yes. Very.

How to bring back the magic to the forums? It hasn't changed so much. I haven't even tried MO, but the gamemagazine gave it 80% out of 100% and I trust 'em...

Note to self: Stop complaining in every post, keep them short and for gods sake. Stop talk about your mental condition. What? Why? You do it all the time! I do? I haven't noiced... Maybe I should... Oh, be quiet ya little monkey-spanker! By the way, if you need help, you know, thinking and stuff, just tell me. I'm here to help..... (and the convo with myself goes on)

DarkHoodness 05-17-2002 09:55 PM

I'm very addited to Oddworld Forums. It's a part of my daily life. :)
Hmmm. . . Well, I'm not sure about how to bring the magic back. Add more fetures and a better chat room, perhaps? Maybe re-design the place? Get a new color scheme and images in. :) Maybe some of us ought to go look around other forums and see what features they have, and then we could copy them. :)
- DH

EDIT: One suggested feature: We could do what Dragon Tails has done. Make several color and image schemes for the Oddworld Forums, and then give people the oppotunity to select the desired colour and image scheme. :) (Won't work with poeple who don't use cookies) Pretty nifty, eh? :D Might be hard to do, though. If I think of more idea's, I'll say them here.

Jacob 05-17-2002 10:00 PM

We shouldn't get too many features, mainly due to the fact that it will be too overwhelming.

To me Oddworld Forums are less about Oddworld and more of an anything-goes forum. Just look at the post count of Off-Topic Discussion compaired to General Oddworld Discussion. Is the magic of Off-Topic Forums being lost?

Joe the Intern 05-18-2002 12:11 AM

I am really addicted to the forums. I come here every damn day! But I think OT lost its touch, because most of the time the topics suck.

TheKhanzumer 05-18-2002 01:06 AM

I love these forums and I am pissed that everyone spends so much time in off topic! We might as well change the name from Oddworld Forums to Former Oddworld Fans Who Met Online and Still Want to Keep in Touch Forums. Why have so many people lost their interest in discussing the oddworld universe! It is an amazing place, even if the last game (which had to be finished for XBox in about one year as apposed to the usual three) did not live up to everyones ridiculously high expectations. It really saddens me to see so many veterans here lose their interest. We can't let the ODDWORLD forums die! Stay odd and remember what originally drew us all to oddworld was not just the original two games but the complex universe they barely began to reveal.

Wil 05-18-2002 08:29 AM

Hmm, I wouldn't say I'm addicted to Oddworld Forums. I am addicted, but I wouldn't say I was, 'cause then i'd look really sad. Er...oh dear.

I spend too much time on computers anyway. I never leave the house unless I'm going to school or on holiday, which is kind of sad. Luckily, that's all going to change.

Jacob 05-18-2002 11:15 AM

Thats good. And how is it going to change?

Majic 05-18-2002 03:57 PM

That little 4 word word called hope... And this place is cool, I mean here its a smaller more controlled society without new idiots coming in in ridiculous hordes every day and posting the same topics 5 times. See, its like we know each other here *shudders at a few persons* and stuff. Yipee, I'm crazy.

I've been thinking of this feature for a while now. vBulletin has this capability, thus why I thought it might be able to be utilized in some way. One idea could be to have a main (default) layout (i.e. this one)... and we could have alternate layouts which users can suggest. Possible ideas could be to have different themes (i.e. wildlife, industrial). or layouts which reflect Oddworld-Web and Oddworldian.

I've got an idea how to get Oddworld Forums more flourishing - release a really good Oddworld game.

Actually, I doubt a simple cosmetic change will do much to draw in the crowds and bring back our old friends, although a personal design would be a nice addition.

Oh yeah, and as for how I'm gonna change, I'm going to go up to someone at school and ask for help. It's called Project R.

What are you laughing at?

Yea. And what do you do with people like Dragadon, who generally post in a specific color that is not changable by style sheets? What is someone has the same color background as Dragadon (or another person's) un-default-colored text ...? Right now we can still assume we all have the same background color and thus can mess with colors. I don't think it's a good idea...

The General Oddworld Disscussion is not loosing it's charm, it's just that their is no real oddworld news since the realease of MO. Once we see ME and SO I'm sure we will love Oddworld all over again and start filling up the General Oddworld Forum again. And about MO being bad, what are you thinking! The reviews speak for themselves... OXM: 90/100 EGM: 90/100 EGM also called it the XBOX game of the year, for crying out loud! These people know games. I loved MO and this is just the tip of the iceberg in the Oddworld Quintology, don't loose hope. Also the forums could use a new design with different colors, pictures, and a new stye, brown is icky. Perhaps a debate forum would be cool.

I think what's putting me off is the huge influx of newbies, most of whom can't spell and/or type in irritatng txt msg lingo. Also, the average age of the forum members seems to have dropped. I like conversing with people with intelligence at least equal to mine.
I keep thinking to myself whether or not it'd be a good idea to just stop any new-members from registering, but that's obviusly not a good idea, because we do get the occasional intelligent newbie (Pinkgoth2, for example; I like her) and some of our existing members are eedjits (not naming names).

Added to the huge waves of new people, I think another thing that's making me feel alienated is that lots of the old members have gone. Pacen and Oddbodd have both said they've left for good, Daniel Brown seems to have naffed off, and Anime_2day and mpwenda came back but left after a very brief stay. If you're out there, guys, do come back!

So there's pretty much not a lot anyone can do about it. Shame I couldn't provide a more helpful answer, but there you go.

I do like this idea, though. To avoid the colour-clash prob that Pinkgoth2 mentioned, maybe Kris or Syd could make a colour-clash-test page, consisting of a table, with each cell having a different background colour (one for each colour scheme) and containing a sample piece of text written repeatedly in different font colours, so people can choose one compatible with all the schemes.

Danny 05-19-2002 07:06 PM

I'm not addicted, really. I used to come online at least once every two days, but that was mainly to avoid doing homework. It's a terrible situation - You can't go out anywhere because you know you should be doing your homework that's due in tomorrow, so you sit down to do it, but end up just surfing the forums...

Fortunately, homework has slackened off now, so I'm free to go out again. Consequently, I'm only coming on line about once a week now. It feels so good...

I don't think there's anything you can do. The fact is, we're getting more and more members joining, and they're all posting the same old topics, and it's just getting difficult to sift the topics that are worth reading from the same old total bollocks that is getting repeated time and again...

What's more, the vast majority of the newbies are, as Anna said, small children (thank you so much for trying to appeal to a younger audience, OWI), and it is very difficult to have a conversation when some 9-yr-old keeps butting their heads in to say something totally irrelevant and/or pointless and/or incomprehensible...

I sound mean, but you all know I speak the truth...

Statikk HDM 05-20-2002 10:28 PM

This place kicks! I mean, all other message bopards bow down in service and reverent worship to the Oddworld forums. This site has it all. I mean, come on raggers, have you ventured into the other half arsed excuses for boards, they blow chunks. Bunch of foos hang out at 'em and they have load times like you wouldn't believe. No matter how much I say I am not addicted, I am. I am hacking away at a library terminal because my nitwit brothers fragged my Internet connection. This place is magic, everything else you do is just gravy!
