An idea that may stop spammers

I think that when members of the forums are about to create a thread there should be a word limit. For example the post must consist of 30 words or more otherwise the thread will be forced to be edited to add more words. And for when people reply the amount of words should be about 15+? Sid or Kris i'm pretty sure you do this if you wanted to right?

Well this is just a suggestion

The prob with that would the be min size limit...some valid questions are asked within only one sentence afterall...

Well we'd have to think of a reasonable word limit the one's i said before were for examples.

It's very difficult to set a minimum word limit. Like Rach said, someone might have a valid question that is BELOW the limit... Why not just live with the fact spam is going to be here to stay? ;)

How about we just don't get ticked off by slight ignorings of the rule? I've only seen really annoying spam once on the board since I've been here, and a lot of perfectly okay "spam"...
Dragadon's definition of it just doesn't overlap with mine, for ex'. Jeez, the fellow sees spam in so many of his posts where I think there is actually a point to.
It may be off-topic... but some people _say_ something in their post, even if it's not much. Even if it's just a "Yes, I like the game too" or what not. Or "I don't agree with you". That's a lot less spammy than "ok". *ughn*

Spam for me is still eMail advertisment with no way of opting out. Like the "Get your univerisity diploma" thread. *cough* v_v

That's just a silly idea because people will just do this this this this this.

munchman 05-14-2002 06:18 PM

i never seen a forum like that, hope they dont do it to this one

BiddaMD 05-14-2002 08:36 PM

I, a man of not too many words would personally hate that. It's like...taking away freedon of speech....and it would defintely lose lots of customers. Not smart buddy

You can't exercise any rules of this sort until we have a hard and fast definition of "spam". Which we don't...

Majic 05-14-2002 11:09 PM

I know, lets jsut make all non-puncuated posts not get through, no pure caps, and no longer than 100 words sentences. I know, we just got rid of a few spaming members, great aint it? Buh bye HBS, ABEACE and the other little fools who dont make sense;)

To Dan: Does it have to come to that?

To Gluck Shmuck: Then you would be spamming if you did that, and the only reason you would do that is because you would have been spamming from the start.

EDIT: If you guys are not so keen on having it, would you agree to a 1 week trial that's fair is'nt it?

Bidda, consider it is absolutely free to you to use this forum. The admins don't get pay. So they get some recognition, alright, but I would hardly call the people who drop in here "customers", much less actually crucial for the survival of Oddworld.au.com or Oddworldian... seriously not.
I'll go as far to say a few less users might actually be a good thing for this forum in the eyes of the moderators. I may be wrong in that tiny detail.

Advocacy of the quantity of words in a message as a measure of the message's value is ludicrous. It's quality, not quantity, that counts.

Don't joke about hermaphrodites.

It's good you want to stop spam, but we couldn't fix it with a word count, for reasons others have already explained. I don't think spam has been that bad lately.

dark_xinos 05-16-2002 03:27 PM

I dont think that would work. What if you want to quote someone? This message is only 19 words+ number

Cool Paramite 05-16-2002 03:43 PM

I agree with everything that is said. (Ack! Too few words!)
