School is pointless for the common man
I've dealt with anti-school issues for a long time and have heard an immense amount of bullshit. Most kids I talk to tell me things like, "I'm never gonna use this", or "History already happened, why learn about it?". And, I always thought that kind of talk is for the ignorant. I, personally, don't like school because I think the initial reason for its creation has been lost in time.
School was meant to be a place to learn and become knowledgeable in your civilization. Why anyone wouldn't want to learn was considered stupid by ancient peoples, and most grabbed the chance for an education. Nowadays, it's become more than just a place to learn, it's become a necessity. You go through school learning the same shit everyone else does, memorizing things, taking big tests, not really learning anything in the process. Knowledge is out of the question, it's all about the grade you have gotten. It's like forced memorization of things deemed "important" by society. And what do you get in return for good grades? a better school.....a better job...more money. The bottom line is....school is senseless learning for cash. I don't know about the rest of you....but I know there are better things than a shit load of money. Sure, you have it easier when it comes to pay issues, but the rest of life is much more than that...It has lost its ancient roots of knowledge and turned into a greed program of stupidity. (comment: all my views are relating to the public school system) |

2. It still is... 3. Whats bad about that, have you seen countries where people don't have the ability to learn? Have you seen what happens to people wihtout an education? 4. Maybe you don't learn anything, maybe you don't want to understand why things work, go running around thinking armagedon has happened next solar eclipse. 5. Hm, Blooms Taxonamy, knowledge is the base level. Knowledge is knowing the information, you have a point there, but any responsible person that wants to know anything goes to comprehension, second level. And the grade? You get that by knowing the damn knowledge. 6. Important? Welll yea, our jobs in society are based around knowledge of what we do, I think it would be important to know how to tell if your going bankrupt, don't you? 7. Its because your usefulness and the skill of the job is greater than the average, which people like seem to like settling for. And good grades don't decide what kind of job your allowed to. Its what your education and knowing of the subject is. If you have a strong background in agriculture, you'll do better in the produce industry than being a composer. 8. Well how are you going to make the cash if you don't know how to do the work? 9. Yes, things like family and friends are more important, but school also serves as a place for socializing and meeting people. It helps teach things for life also, like broken relationships and how to act responsibly. Not to mention you meet friends in school. I mean, how many people are you going to meet sitting on you ass watching TV? 10. You shouldn't be relying on school for everything, it helps with knowledge and teaches responsibility. You'd croak trying to file papers if you've slacked off your life. It helps us learn how the world works, todays age works differently than when than when acient Egypt or other old cultures were around, so naturaly what we need to know is different. 11. The public school system prepares people. I'm in a public school, I'm fine, I'm going to have a perfectly fine life. If your gonna drop out of school or something, you shouldn't be expecting people to take care of you later in life. |
The real reason for school
You seem to have missed the real reason for school in the 21st century: a babysitting service to keep kids off the streets and away from a life of crime. Of course, my school seemed to have the opposite effect.
|
Yeah, cause if school didn't exsist we would go on the net instead of study and go into the crips and sell drugs with Freeway rick and the CIA and not grow up into good citizens and get pregnant/get people pregnant and not love our mothers and turn out all evil and rotten. I kinda like school.

Re: School is pointless for the common man
BiddaMD, I really disagree with the main point that you're trying to get across. School is not pointless, it still teaches and often keeps children from being ignorant. I think that every one should have a good education (well, there are some that shouldn't.. ;)) and be schooled. But there is another one of your points that I like: That a lot of schooling has become pretty pathetic and money grubbing...
:
2. I think it is a necessity... 3. Yes... Testing doesn't really help. Testing is over done, boring and oft-pointless. Sure, they say it's helpfull and helps teachers see where a student is, but it doesn't even help most... just bores. Memorizing things... Yeah, memorized information really doesn't show intelligence (can you guess where I stole that from?), but when it comes to history, learning these facts helps you from being ignorant. (yeah, you don't like this argument, I know) Learning the same things... Eh, I dunno what to say here... :| Btw, another thing is that history is often ruined by biased teachers. I'm sure so much American history is ruined by our teachers, trying to tell us shit like America always doing good. That pisses me off. 4. Hmm, I'd think that talking to students about how they've done and what level they're at would be more helpfull. 5. Yeah... 6. If you get a good grade, I'm pretty sure you'd also have knowledge... 7. I've never really thought about that... It's kind of true, though... Most things that you learn are pretty much things that are to help you get money... 8. Damned public schools! *shakes fist* |

Sears Poncho.
Another thing, I've been hearing things about public schools pushing religion and politics onto the children... That's annoying too...
I also remember a teacher who would always ramble about how evil Christopher Columbus was... She was really insane... She would always drop subliminal things into conversations about what a horrible person he was... She even taught her students what fiend he was... It was just weird. :| :

If theren wasn't school we would be living like monkeys. School teaches us
1.To have maners 2. to be kind 3.to learn about your culture 4.Memorize things for the future 5.Teach us to the fact that school is cool 6. and you get to see your friends 7.school is to have fun and build your mind 8.Its from school to here to all the way down there 9. The point is we wouldnt really be living if we didnt have school |
:
2. To be kind? How? 3. Yes, you're right here. Though they can change many things... 4. Oh dear, read the other posts. 5. Brainwashed? This makes no sense. 6. You have some? (j/k... maybe) 7. Eh, maybe some schools. 8. THE HELL? This doesn't make sense. 9. We wouldn't be living...? What do you mean? |

|
Ugh...Melvin, you beat me to it!!
:
2) No...again, thats the parents who do this. 3) You could do this at home. 4) Again...you could do this at home. 5) *Cough-Simpleton-Cough* 6) You could see your friends at home. 7) You can do this at home. 8) What? 9) Hush little boy...hush. Basically you have put a really crap point across. School gives us rules, we need these. It breaks us in slowly. It also improves our social skills and allows us to meet new people. By the time your in secondary school you should have friends...if you dont...suicide is a possibly option. :

2. Speak of the devil! More tact! Sure it lacked tact, but it was worth it... :D |
Huh i made fun of him...excuse me because he's the 1 who makes fun of me

Am I the only one who learned things from School? I thought the School System in England left something to be desired, but apparently the ones in all of your countries are totally shit... I mean yes, school has its downsides, but I disagree with you in that I believe that Learning is really quite important...
|
:
2. Why excuse you? 3. Yes, I can see that. I wonder why ... I'm not going to mention the apparently pointless topic and thinking you weren't VykerSawBones ... |

Nothing can be worse than having a jackass teacher who sucks. Yes, history is dumb most of the time. Some of its cool, but my teacher asigns like maps to do and crap easy worksheets to do. If its not stated above, its worse. O yes, and BiddMD, I believe I forgot to add this in my first post, but I think what you said was totaly stupid...
|
Ok. All of you missing the point. Maybe I wasn't stating the topic clear enough....Learning is good. The manifestation which has become school, is bad. Two different things. I was trying to get the point across that the core reason for school is to learn....when in fact kids could care less about learning and more about the grade they get. I can't believe any kid can stand there and say that the majority of children enjoy learning in school....what bullshit. The only reason kids do their homework and study for tests is so they can get a good grade! Thats it! You don't do it for anything else. See, the true meaning of school is gone. Kids take their grades, show them to colleges, go to a good college, get a job, make money.....when was knowledge any part of that? And most of those grades that kids got are bullshit things they learn. It's a game of memorization and facts. There is no brain stimulation in that. (good, Fazerina)
Also, why are you kids disecting my post....just read the damn thing and other ideas will make sense. Melvin the paramite.....you stupid man. Your "crazy" teacher was very smart. Christopher Colombus is responsible for the death of thousands of native american peoples. When he first landed and met the people he read them a proclomation in spanish, which of course they could not understand, telling that if they didn't surrender their land they would die. And of course, the confused natives didn't surrender their land because they didn't know what was happening. Chris and his men raped native women, bashed babies' heads against the rocks, and burned men in 13 to honor Jesus and the tweleve apostles. They made bets as to who could split a man in two in one and blow, and other awful, horrible games. If that's not evil, ignoramus, I don't know what is. |

Wow, BiddaMD... Calm down, you act as if every one who posted here told you that you're a moron who has no idea what goes on in school. Geez, man, I was starting to like you....
First off, try reading my post about Christopher Colombus again. No where did I say, "Oh, Christopher Colombus was a great man who did no wrong! Oh, he was a fabulous person!!!" Yes, go and read it. If you'd notice, I said this person often dropped subliminal points into conversation that had NOTHING to do with him. Don't you think that it's a bit odd that someone (especially someone who teaches children) would do this? I agree with you, he wasn't a good person at all, and most try to think of him as one. I was just telling about a teacher... Ugh. Really, you call me an ignoramus for this? Also, it's quite obvious that you don't care what we have to say. Really, try reading the posts. As you can see, I said that I agreed with you about what has happened to schools. The reason I said that I think school is very important, maybe is because I go to a good school that doesn't do all of those things... Please try giving nice, open-minded arguments to people who disagree. (I'm sorry if I offended you...) |
Dude, anyone with half a brain and an once of ambition does school work for more than a grade (or so i hope). And doesnt it take some skill to actualy get a good grade? Do you know what Blooms Taxonemy is... The different leevels of thinking. Schools, at least where I live, are trying to take t he learning level up past knowledge, even if the point is somewhat lost, its trying to be brought back. Maybe you live in a messed up place or soemthing, I don't really care, but it seems what you made was a large generalization. Think next time.

I think school here in the US of A is going down the tubes in a sense...First of all a lot of parents see school as a place to drop off their kids just so they are out of their hands for about 8 hours a day (ie 'babysitting') and don't really bother to teach their kids manners and other things they should be learning at home!
Another thing that bugs me is some of the subjects that are required learning in schools, like a foreign language. (A foreign language is required to get into a lot of colleges). Now...if I was to become a translator for a foreign ambassidor or something I could understand the need for that...but how many want to become that? Waste of time if you ask me. 'Course the reason we have to learn languages could be in part that my country is adapting to the foreigners(especially Mexicans...) rather then making the foreigners adapt to us, as it should be. (whole different issue here...). Another is Religion...but in my case that is because I was going to a Catholic school (and that is another rant...I have it on my site if anyone is interested...)... Some courses I do believe we need to learn, like English (reading and writting skills you kind of need in the outside world)and History (those that forget the past are doomed to repeat it...). Ok...mind decided it didn't want to work anymore...will continue this after work... |
School... I personally hate it, not the learning part, i never managed to get along with anyone my own age, i always end up arguing with people my age ( I get along better with older people for some reason) Plus There is always peer pressure and stuff, that's why most people hated school, it's cause of the uncomfort the other students cause. Also there is always that group just looking for a fight with anyone for any reason, I.E i sometimes wear my slipknot top's on casual days, and not one day has passed were i did'nt cop shit for liking them. Also people think i'm a loser cause i don't smoke weed, and get pissed every night. But i'm pretty sure if it was not for all the bullying that took place at school, espically high school, people would enjoy school just that little more.

I know the School System is not perfect. I accept that. Teachers are underpaid, and some schools (although these are becoming rarer and rarer outside of Faith Schools) attempt to force children into Christianity. However, I disagree that the principles of School have become polluted.
Most Children beyond Primary-School-Age go to school to Learn. Some younger children go to school because they have to, but that is because they have yet to discover the importance of Learning, but most Secondary-School pupils realise that learning is important, and go to school for that purpose. Bidda, I don't know what kind of morons seem to live in your area, or even where that area is, but I assure you that they do not reflect the attitudes of people in England, at least. You say that children now go to school to get Grades instead of to Learn. I don't see where you got the idea that these are two separate concepts. Grades exist to prove that you have Learned something. Maybe the Exams in America are different, but here in England we have to learn things in order to pass them... Bidda, you seem to think that the whole "School-Grades-College-Qualifications-Job" transition is somehow bad. I'm not sure what part of this sequence you object to, to be honest. From your argument, it seems that you either object to the idea of needing qualifications for certain jobs, or you object to the idea that getting a good job is important. I'll go through these separately, so just ignore the paragraph that doesn't apply... I think there is a damn good reason why you need certain qualifications for certain jobs, and that is that certain jobs require you to learn things in order to do the job successfully. I don't see your problem here. I very much doubt that your average person who has never studied Medicine in their life could go on to be a Doctor, for example. Of course, you might be of the belief that grades are not a necessary part of the Learning Process, but again, I disagree. We can't have people just saying "Oh, I've learned all that. Can I go and hold people's lives in my fingertips now?" and then being allowed to go on to be a surgeon, can we? We need some kind of proof that they are competant enough to perform their job. That's what Qualifications are for. If you are of the belief that getting a good job is unimportant, then I beg to differ once more. I believe it is important to give something back to the society that has raised you and cared for you since birth. I don't think it's all about the money at all... If I have misinterpreted your argument, then I apologise. You're just no good at explaining things... ;) |
