Are you just like 98% of the world's population???

Have a go at this ...it's quite clever.
When you get a chance try this and let me know if you are in that 2% of the population....
Carry out this test. Just follow the instructions as quick as possible but do not carry on reading the following questions before you finish the previous one. You do not need to write the answers, just do it using your mind.

You'll be overwhelmed by the result.......

How much is : 15+6

3+56

89+2

12+53

75+26

25+52

63+32

I know! Calculations are hard work but come on, just a few more...

123+5

QUICK!!!
THINK OF A TOOL AND A COLOUR.

Scroll further to the bottom...

Just a little further ...............

You have just thought about a red hammer, haven't you????

If this is not the case you are among 2% of the people who have a "different" if not "abnormal" mind. 98% of the folks will answer a "red hammer" while doing this exercise.

Sl'askia 03-01-2002 02:13 AM

heh I am of the 2%. I thought blue hammer not red hammer :D :D

abe22 03-01-2002 02:26 AM

I am of the 2% also I thought of a black hammer. I like these things. I've heard of choose a vegetable and most people choose carrots...weird.

Cloverfield 03-01-2002 02:29 AM

I'm different again ... I thought of a Red Saw.

Abe Babe...

MudokonOddball 03-01-2002 08:44 AM

Woah, am I out there. I thought of a purple phillips. :fuzzle:

ODDBODD 03-01-2002 09:06 AM

a green drill?

alot of 2 percenters here, not impressed

One, Two, Middlesboogie 03-01-2002 10:09 AM

I thought of an orange screwdriver.

Teal 03-01-2002 10:39 AM

I must be half-abnormal (but then everyone knew that) as I thought of a red spanner. I reckon all of you that said something else thought "red something - no, there must be a trick to it, I'll say something else" ;)

That reminds me of that other mind trick, I'll have to try and remember how it went...

Cool Paramite 03-01-2002 10:47 AM

I thought of a red hammer. I'm like 98% of the world:(

Doug 03-01-2002 12:05 PM

I thought of a green shovel.

While this is not a large enough statistical sample, by my count that is so far 1 of 8 thinking of a red hammer -- 12.5%. I don't believe that that figure will increase significantly, certainly not to anywhere near 98 percent, nor do I believe that it is true that 98 % of the population will think of a red hammer. Even if you assume that all the people that viewed this topic without responding said red hammer, you've already got 18 % "not-red hammers". Given the large array of colors and even larger array of tools, it would be a notable phenomenon if even 20 or 25 percent thought of the same item.

To me, this is an example of the so-called facts and figures that are cited far too frequently here and other similar places as absolute truth. I find it shocking how many people do not understand that just because you see something on the internet somewhere doesn't necessarily mean it's true.

Gluk Schmuck 03-01-2002 12:11 PM

Red spanner!

I'm in that 2%, baby!

Fazerina 03-01-2002 01:33 PM

I'm in the majority.... Wow! Is there any flying cows on the sky? :D I thought of a red hammer..

Huge_Bro_Slig 03-01-2002 01:56 PM

kool

i said red screwdriver yay im a part of the 2 percent

Teal 03-01-2002 01:58 PM

*wonders how many of those that said they thought of something that wasn't a red hammer actually DID...*

With all the colors and tools available, wouldn't it be more suspicious if 9 out of 10 of the responses were "red hammer" ?

Melvin:squeeking paramite 03-01-2002 03:15 PM

Yay, I'm not part of that 98%.... I thought of a green saw.... Now I'm sad, though, because it reminded me of how I've always wanted a green saw, but never got one... *tear rolls down cheek*

Teal 03-01-2002 03:20 PM

No; it's a recognised phenomenon. as red is the commonest colour and hammer the most commonly thought-of tool, red hammer is what springs to most people's minds when asked that question. So Nyyah!

dark_xinos 03-01-2002 03:24 PM

Yes hammer was what i thouht of. But seriusly, you know thatGREEN is the donimant color:D I thouhgt of a green hammer, dont you know! Seing how most here is 2%. So ODDWORLD is 2% of OURWORLD. oddworld is ourworld

MojoMan220 03-01-2002 03:37 PM

I thought of a red table saw.

One, Two, Middlesboogie 03-01-2002 03:40 PM

Not sure about red being the 'dominant' colour. It has the longest wavelength, and food items packaged in red tend to sell better than in other colours, but our brains are actually better at seeing green. Humans can see more different shades of green than any other colour, which is why night-vision goggles show everything in green.

Doing maths, however, does make your brain think of red and orange (but orange more so). This is why, if you'd asked somebody the above maths questions and then told them to quickly think of a vegetable, they'd likely say 'carrot'.

Like most people, I unconsciously thought of orange. But my dad has a screwdriver with an orange handle that he's had as long as I can remember, so when I read 'tool' while thinking of 'orange', 'screwdriver' was the first thing I thought of.

Why are people most likely to say 'hammer'? I use screwdrivers and saws far more than I use hammers.

I'd never heard of the phenomenon Anna speaks of that doing math makes one think red/orange, but I believe that could be a recognized phenomenon. At least there's some basis for it. But what is the source of the conclusion that "hammer is the most commonly thought-of tool"? And to the extent of 98 times out of 100? And by what measure is red the commonest color? who measured?

I'm perfectly open to the suggestion that there is a scientific basis for people to have a tendency to pick "red hammer," or at least a particular color. I will never believe that it's 98 % without reading the study myself. The most important point, though, is the same one I made in my first post -- someone just saying something is so doesn't make it so.

I thought of a hammer and the colour orange. The instructions don't exactly tell you to think of a tool of a specific colour, rather just a tool and a colour.

Maybe if it is a genuine test that works, perhaps the people attracted to these forums are from that two percent of the population. I've done a similar one that I might post.

What are you saying? We're all a little Odd? Wanna fight? ;)

SeaRex 03-01-2002 06:41 PM

I though of a green screw driver. I guess I'm messed up, too...

Lampion 03-01-2002 06:43 PM

My jaw droped when I read "RED HAMMER", because it was the same tool and color I thought.

Here is my theory: the math puzzles make your mind to focus only in logic, loosing contact with reality for a while. When you're asked to think of a tool and a color, I agree that HAMMER is a very common tool, probably it was the first one to be invented by our ancestors, since it is just an extension of our arm. When you're asked to think of a color, the association with the previous tool is inevitable, but first I thought "RED", then I said "RED HAMMER". RED is probably a very common color, besides, red, brow or orange are the best colors to be applied to a hammer.

If we were asked to think of a color first, then a tool, I guess the colors would vary a lot.

Majic 03-01-2002 10:11 PM

hm, i must be part of like .00001% i thought of green and (dont laugh) the bold tool...... well, it is a tool kinda, isnt it?:fuzconf: :fuzconf: :fuzconf:

Abe's son 03-01-2002 10:49 PM

wow i must be nuts

i thought of a.........well..........a.............black missle then a sand worm from dune and then oddworld (that was werid i am part of like 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000001 im the only one in the world to think of that............in that sequnce.......one right after another)

your down here................why?

ODDBODD 03-02-2002 03:40 AM

i thought of green because thats the colour of my textbook and i thought of a drill because i had an accident with the drill at woodwork today

Joe the Intern 03-02-2002 03:53 AM

I thought of a blue hammer, while Sal the Mudokon thought of a chartrouse scalpal. ;) I think he's in the top .0005%. Hehehe
