What are 'souls' and 'spirits'

What are they to you? To me they are one and the same. To me they are your consciousness, the part of you that thinks and feels, the part of you that enables you to 'live'. The part that (depending on what you believe), when you die, either asends to 'heaven', falls to 'hell', moves to a new fresh 'vessel' (reincarnation), or simply ceases to exists altogether.
Right now I am not sure personally what happens to it when you die, though I am leaning toward reincarnation.

Soul: The thing in the bottom of your shoe!
Spirit: Contains lots of ethanol!

But seriously,
Soul: Your consiousness. It 'dies' with the brain.

Spirit: It can either mean 'ghost', 'soul' or 'booze'.

I agree with Gluk. I can't say it better.

I think it is generally accepted to be the other way round - It is the Spirit that dies with the person, and the Soul that lives on... (Assuming one believes in the afterlife, as subject over which I Agnost regularly...)

A soul is someone's identity beyond the physical realm and it can do what it pleases when the body it inhabits dies. I don't know if they exist, but I think they might.

Spirit isn't so specific and can refer to lots of things. For example, if you do something especially compassionate, you might say "In the spirit of Gandhi, I donate five thousand dollars to the local orphanage." Or it can mean a ghost.

There is no such thing as either a soul or a spirit, both were made up in the dawn of time, it's a myth that has been a plague to the human mind, the only reason heaven and hell were created was because most people are relgious or superstitious, so the good people can feel that they are yes going to heaven and the bad people that no they are not going to heaven. A soul or a spirit has never actually been scientifically proven, therefore it does not really exist. Try not to waste you whole life thinking about why you are here on earth or what is your purpose, just live your life to the full, and when you die that's it, the only way i can possibly describe death is Infinite oblivion. So just live your life don't worry to much about things that don't exist. ;)

I think the 'soul' is the part of you that tells you what to do and your 'spirit' is the part that makes you do it. I know some people regard this explanation as the 'conscience' but I don't give a shit.

EDIT: Robin can't you see that this is your own opinion not the so called truth it's just what you think the soul and spirit is.

That's false logic. It wasn't proven that the Earth was roughly spherical for a long time, does that mean that before it was proven to be spherical it was flat?

What is a soul and a spirit, in your opinion, then? You can't just say souls and spirits don't exist in THIS topic, the point of this topic is that not everyone has the same definition of souls and spirits.

Robin...that is wrong. Well...part of it. The Spirit thing i believe is like a Ghost...and people have come into contact with Ghosts...therefore there must be something in it. Souls...some people can see 'Souls' or 'Auras' So therefore there must be something in it.
