Oddworld Names : Origin

OK, I really would like to know how OWI got to the names of the species and the characters. I looked some things up myself and found interesting things. I guess we best take one name after another. If you think you know the origin of the name, then go ahead:

1. We'll start with Mullock:

this is what I found in a dictonary:

MOLLUSK: (mol'esk), n. any invertebrate of the phylum Mullusca comprising the chitons, snails, bivalves, squids, octopuses, etc., typically having a calcareous shell of one, two, or more pieces that wholly or partly encloses the soft, unsegmented body...

the part of the octopus is the most interisting, since glukkons ar part of the octi-family

So MOLLUSK -> Molluck

If you agree , disagree, or know more, please add your thoughts on 'Molluck'. If nobody knows anything extra, we could move on to another name.

Pacen 06-08-2001 07:37 AM

That sounds true to me.

Here's another: VP Aslik -> Arse-Lick. I guess this implies that he "sucks up" to his superiors, or that he's an idiot.

Sal the Mudokon 06-08-2001 08:42 AM

hehe...aslik...hehe...elum=mule backerdzez...hehe...mule=different form of ass...mulelick...hehe

Joe the Intern 06-09-2001 03:37 AM

matt.....er...sal, please explain this to the class. :confused: :confused: :confused: :confused:

Joe the Intern 06-09-2001 03:38 AM

nevermind. all those "hehe's" got me confused. i understand now. but i agree with pacen and oddipus.

One, Two, Middlesboogie 06-09-2001 08:02 AM

I never noticed the connection between 'Molluck' and 'mollusc'. I always thought that Molluck's name was based on 'Moloch', who's some evil dude in the Bible, I think. It means 'devil' in Greek or Latin; I can't remember which.

As for 'Aslik', I think the 'arse-lick' idea is quite groovy. It never occured to me before.

'Phleg' sounds quite like 'phlegm', but I can't see any connection between those. 'Phlegmatic' means calm, so maybe it's an oxymoronic pun; his name sounds like a word meaning 'calm', but he's actually rather aggressive.

'Dripik' sounds like 'drip', which he probably is. :)

We still don't know what the Brewmaster's real name is; I've been meaning to ask Alf about that.

Alector 06-09-2001 09:32 AM

hehe!
that's cOol with the names! :D
we have 155 figures in our first comic, in the next about 90 :D

i agree with both Mollock explanations. the Mollusk one also fits in with the idea of the Octigi family being like the Mollusk family [e.g. squids/octopi]

the Aslik one was the first thing i noticed about the game. being the deputy, he probably does a lot of arse-licking...

i think that Phleg IS a reference to phlegm, if only because 'Phleg' used to be a sort of slang for 'spit up a huge gob of phlegm'...

what about good guy names? people seem to think that squeek will squeak [i disagree], but what about munch? where did that come from? [abe is kinda obvious, due to being an actual name...]

oddguy 999 06-09-2001 10:34 PM

I though "Dripik" sounded like "drop kick", only said very fast. He is a bit of drop kick. :D

Yemmling 06-09-2001 11:13 PM

mudoken= ken=resident of
mudo=mudos
mudokens are residents of mudos, get it?

gabbit=rabbit
scrab=crab+scarab(crabby bug)
paramite=parasite+mite(a kind of bug as well)
aslik=ass-lick(kind of obvious)
dripik=drip-ick(perhaps)
slig=slug wit' an "i"
slurg=slug with an "r"
fleech=leech with a "f"
elum=mule backwards(deja vu)
meep=sheep without sh, instead...."m"
feeco depot=fecal matter(poop)=fecal depot
rupturefarms= rupturing is like breaking, tearing, destroying

Joe the Intern 06-09-2001 11:41 PM

like sal said. elum=mule backwards. mule=different form of ass. is there a connection between elum and aslik? there just might be ;) ;) ;) :cool: lol

freakyLA 06-10-2001 07:52 AM

hey, interesting topic, I always wondered about the names. Mudoken is the most intersting one. Mudos, the region of oddworld where the action is taking place, sounds a lot like mundane, of which the etymology (the origin of the world) is the following:
Late Middle English mondeyne < Old French mondain < Latin mundanus < mundus, which means world.
I fact, the first definition of mundane is "of this world; worldly."

Also, one must think of the Mudoken tribes, Mudanchee and Mudomo. Mundanchee < Apache, ?
Aapche is derived from American Spanish, probably, form of a Zuni expression
apachu, which means enemy.
Mudomo, I cant find anything on. It sounds like a nice tribal name, though.

Alector 06-10-2001 06:56 PM

err... Freaky, 'Abe' is an actual name... it doesn't really need explaining...

i agree with everything Yemmling said, except that i think 'slig' might be more closely resemblant to 'squid', as they have feeding tentacles, and we know [don't argue anyone, please] that sligs are closely related to Glukkons, and we know that the Octigi family [Glukkons] is roughly equivalent to the Octopi family. errm... anyone follow that? i'm not very good at explaining things...

slig=squid
Octigi=octopus/octopi
glukkon=glutton
bat=... well, bat
khamzumerz=consumers
meetles=beetles
mugs=who knows?
sea rexes=rex means king; king of the sea
rat=rat
chronicler=probably more of a job description that a species name
kintos=... well, sounds vaguely oriental
meech=haven't a clue

so, anyone know where mugs, meeches, and kintos came from?

MrBoj 06-10-2001 10:02 PM

well, to mug is to assault, and mugs are supposed to be violent, so i dont really know.

kintos; well, kin means "akin to", but also can be derived from Old Norse, kyn, which means to produce. Weren't the kintos race used as slaves in the mountains. If so, this may make sense.

Joe the Intern 06-11-2001 01:11 AM

me and sal the mudokon used to say that sligs were slugs in mechanical pants. and i came up with an explanation of my own for feeco depot. when it shows "feeco depot" on a sign in the game it usually puts a space between "fee" and "co". i took this as two words. fee could mean of course the bharge of money. the co part could stand for company. since the fee co depot sends you to different companies on oddworld, and the glukkons worship moolah, it could mean it takes you to all the money making companies of the glukkons. i know its confusing and if it is for you than read it over. :D :D

TheBlueScrab 06-12-2001 03:17 PM

Hi :D
I found the Oddworldnames funny!

I agree, Joe. I noticed the space between 'Fee' and 'Co' (in fact, I've never thought of it as saying anything else) but you beat me to it. :D

And MrBoj, your sig is way over the size limit. Just thought I'd tell you before the admins growl at you for it. :)

Oddipus 06-16-2001 08:43 AM

WOW, I never thought there were so many people who allready figured the names out too! Anyway, I learned a lot new exmplanations. I guess sometimes it's easier for you guys who actually speek English.

I found an interesting 'Mudokon-explanation' too:
Mo·doc
n. pl. Modoc or Mo·docs
a. A Native American people inhabiting an area of the Cascade Range in south-central Oregon and northern California.
b. A member of this people.
3. The dialect of Klamath spoken by the Modoc.

Anybody who nows what Vykker comes from?

freakyLA 06-16-2001 10:40 AM

Well Mug= Bug sounds good. But I don´t understand the other expainations English!

Black Dragon 06-16-2001 11:38 AM

Wow, I never made the connection between some of these, like Molluck and mollusk. I have one (I think): Queen Maggie and Magog -see what I'm gettin' at? *Looks around* *cickets chirp* Oh never mind... *walks out*

One, Two, Middlesboogie 06-16-2001 11:44 AM

I think that 'Magog' is actually based on 'Gogmagog', who is yet another mythical evil dude (can't remember if he's a Biblical character or not, though).

Lanning said once that the Mudokons were based on Tibetan Monks.

Meetle = Beetle.

MrBoj 06-16-2001 09:17 PM

Aight, here's the deal with Gogmagog:
"Gog and Magog" - Biblethe nations that, under Satan, are to war against the kingdom of God: Rev. 20:8

Well, if I remember in an interview with Lorne (there have been many, i think it was the one in Next Generation) it mentioned he had a personal collection of references, mostly books, with which he may refer to when inventing new characters. He definately seems to be a widely knowledgeable person.
