PSX Chipping -- is it right?

I am starting this topic because of a comment MB had in the future topic when I said I was looking forward to getting my PSX chipped. She said "isn't that piracy".

Chipping in one sense is considered piracy. Especially when you get your PSX chipped for the sole purpose of playing illegal copies of games.

But the other side of chipping is that it also lets you play official release games from other countries. Like US games if you live in Australia.

So if some games you really want to play are not released in your country, what are you to do? Never play them? Buy a US PSX just to play them? Or get your PSX chipped?

Never playing them would suck. Buying a US PSX is pretty pointless as you already have a console. Getting yours chipped is all you can really do.

Sony and Game companies are against chipping for piracy reasons. But it is these companies that don't give some games the release they should (I am referring to decent titles, not cheap-ass 2 bit titles). And I can't see how non-release would profit them in any way.

They should release a chip that only plays OS games... I don't see the big deal, NTSC videos are standard now here... a lot of countries still accept multi-zoning DVD. Why not gaming systems? They could sell the chip as an add on device (goes in the memory card slot or on the memory card much like the DVD operations for the Xbox and PS2).

OK... it wouldn't prevent piracy, but it would sure be a start.

What is everyone's opinion on PSX chipping ... is it right or wrong. Or do you have a mixed opinion?

I would never let anyone chip my playstation.
Chipping is allowed copying is allowed unless you sell them then its illegal. people say copying games isn't allowed then why do they sell CD burners isn't that what they are for.

I don't think its right but its not wrong either anyway I would never let anyone open my playstation don't know what they could do to it.

you've never heard of back-ups, making your OWN software and distributing it, picture albums, etc...

i think consoles should be made compatible with all the main TV sytems (NTSC, PAL, etc) and then the games would work on any system
personally, i wouldn't get mine chipped cos: 1. it apparently breaks it 2. some games may not work with it 3. i don't like the idea of my PSone being de-assembled

i think it's ok if you use it to play games from other console areas as long as you don't use pirated games...

as i've said already, it's up to the console companys...if they don't want their consoles chipped they should make the systems universal

My friend Mactus got his PS chipped. The only reason really is because he can't afford most games, so he gets them copied off of friends. I mean, if he had the money, he'd go out there and buy the game, but he doesn't, so he can't, so instead he gets it copied off a friend.
It's the same story with me sometimes as well.

I have no problem whatsoever with chipping a PlayStation. I also have no problem with playing 'illegally' copied games. If I have to go to court, and they blame me for playing on a game that hasn't been paid for, I'll ask him whether Sony paid for the CD it was written on. That'll learn 'em.

The truth is, chipping and illegal copies actually helps the gaving community and makes more money for the publishers rather than less.

Uh oh, cops!

i find chipping your playstation fine as long as you dont get caught. anythings fine as long as you dont get caught j/k. but i wouldnt let anyone do it to my PS cuz i would be worried mine 'd break.

I got my PlayStation Christmas '97, and got it chipped one year later almost exactly. And it's lastest to this very day, and will live to raise children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Er, well, I mean there's nothing wrong with it.

As long as pirated games aren't being played, I see nothing wrong about having PlayStations chipped to play foreign games. It is perfectly legit. The only bad thing about it is that it voids your warranty.

I agree 'cos it lets U play great games at
for about a 5th of the retail price

Sexy Slig 10-07-2001 05:15 PM

A 5th of the retail price?
How are developers of games gonna make money?
No money=no games!

So they put advertising in the game to have money...
Who does copy oddworld games?

Gluk Schmuck 10-07-2001 06:01 PM

i know someone who copies lots of other games...

I guess that's the main thing that concerns me ... is that some people say that it doesn't let you play some games, but others don't have a problem.

I will probably get mine chipped when I get my PS2... then if something does screw up with playing local games, I will still be able to play them on my PS2.

So I'll use my old PSOne for o/s games and my PS2 for PS2 and local PSOne games.

Plus the warranty will be over by then, so I won't have that as a concern.

Anyway, I have enough local games and Munch coming out before I need worry about the O/S games that I want to play.

Then all I need is to buy one of those connector consoles so I can connect Xbox, PS2 and PSOne to my TV without changing cables constantly!!!

It's not a concern for me. I must agree with Sydney and sexy slig,( funny I just cannot imagine a sexy slig). Dev's and publishers deserve the pay day, if piracy runs rampant, no more games. Rent more often, buy used, then resell, get a job, don't "STEAL" from games companies.
