What is a male and what is a female???

I've always asked me that! But i never found an answer about this :( . How can people differentiate between male and female Mudokons? Does have female Mudokons a lucid voice than the male Mudokons or are the voice the same thing? Does it give generally females? ( Herrlich ) ;)

Bye, TheBlueScrab

Alector 06-07-2001 02:34 PM

I dunno, blue...
The most Mudokons looks alike.
But many have miscellaneous voices.
i never read about it. :D
AbeBabe can give you a better answer!

Well, I figure as far as Muds go, this: there is one female, who is the queen. Her main function is to reproduce (Sam). There must be one or two other males around, but that must be it. The rest of the Muds, such as Abe, most likely are unisexual (not male or female).

Danny 06-07-2001 07:11 PM

you mean 'asexual', not 'unisexual'. there's no such word as 'unisexual'.

Abe IS male, though, he's just sterile. there's a difference. his pituary and thyroid glands still produce male hormones, he just has no genitals.

also, it isn't all mudokons that are sterile, just the slave caste. we don't know about the sexual status of scrubs, flakes, posers, big kahoonees, or any other castes.

i'd imagine that the difference is quite like the difference between human men and women, except that a slave male and a slave female are both sterile, so wouldn't be able to have babies.

gender is as much a state of mind among mudokon slaves as anything else.

If you want to understand Mudokons, and therefore, most of Oddworld superspecies reproduction system, you'd better study Earth insects reproduction systems, like Ants and Bees, becuse that's the animals that ispired Mr Lanning and other Oddworld inhabitants to create Oddworld characters, as Mudokons, Glukkons and Sligs, to point just a few.

In Oddworld universe, we are not supposed to see anything like the "Boy-Meets-Girl" story, because that's not the point of Odddworld tales.

Let me try to answer the topic qustion: what is a male and what is a female?

Many living species are assexual, meaning that an individual of that species doesn't need to interact to another individual to reproduce. This way, it bears a young that contains exactly the same genetic code of is generator. Examples of this kind of species are bacterias, and other microspcopic creatures.

Then, nature created a more evolved kind of reproduction, the Sexual reproduction. Two diferent individuals exchange genetic material to generate young offspring.

Scientists conventioned that the individual that gives his genetic material to the other individual is called The Male. The individual that receives the genetic material, and therefore has the task to generate the new young creature is called the Female.

This can be rather confusing, because some species just don't behave exactly like that.

The first humans just called a man a MALE, and a woman, a FEMALE. Then, they tried to explain wild creatures using this same concept.

Talking about humans, it is very difficult to determine who is a male, and who is a female, because it depends on what kind of features are you studying.

Genetically speaking, a Male is an individual that has a pair XY in one of his cromossomes (I dont know which one it is). A Female is an individual that has a pair XX in the same cromossomes.

But recently scientists discoverd that a few men have a pair XX, instead of XY. So, this kind of classsification is not 100% perfect.

Taht brings us to another kind of classification, the so called gonadal gender. Human individuals that have testicles, and full functional reproductive system that produces spermatoziods, a male gamete that has the ability to fecund female ova, are so called Male individuals. On the contrary, they are called Female.

Well, many men think they are girls, and the same thing also occurs to many women, and that brings us to another kind of gender classification: The Psychologic gender. These kind of people think that, although they have all the biologic apparatus to be considered a male, or a female, their mind just disagree on that, making some folks think os that as "a man in a woman's body", or as "a woman in a man's body" perspective.

Sorry about all the Mambo Jambo above, I am in a typing mood today.

Oddipus 06-08-2001 06:39 AM

Don't feel sorry. It reminds my of my biologie lessons I used to have. I find it very interesting!
You forgot one angle too look at it: social!

It seems to be a fashion to act strange concerning your sexual feelings.

Sal the Mudokon 06-08-2001 09:17 AM

haha! german abe sounds gay?! thats hilarious! anyways...a female is born looking like sam, but her lower body(which is not visible in sam) is more slender than a normal muds. she must mate once with a male to be completely fertile for the rest of her egg layin days! then, a special plant must be given to her to make a new female wen she is almost of old age. then the cirle of life begins all over again... howd i know this?? I MADE IT UP! but sounds like a good eplanaition, right?

o, n just to settle sumthing: unisexual's DO exist in animals as primitive as some worms to even some frog species.
bysexual: though it now means u like both tacos n hot dogs (wink wink) it originally ment hermaphrodicy.
hermaphrodite: a strange disorder in which a person has bothe male and female sex organs. one of the organs becomes dominant over the other n people with it hav no ability to reproduce.
homosexual:hav sexual tendencies twoards someone that is of yer same sex (scientific term: Fagidikimus Maximus)
trisectual: i belive that cheech, from the cheech n chong movies said it best wen he said "Man, she's a trisectual!" chong-"wats that mean?" cheech-"it means she'll try-anything!"
thats all for now, expect a quiz tomorrow morning!

Joe the Intern 06-09-2001 03:45 AM

i never heard about the men with XX. how is that possible? tell me more; don't spare the gory details... while we're at the chromosome thing, what chromosomes do hermaphrodites and neuters have? XXY? X?

let's see... you got:

fertile males
fertile females
sterile males
sterile female
fertile hermaphrodites
sterile hermaphrodites
neuters [asexual]

and then there are all the transsexuals and stuff. phew! it isn't as simple as it sounds.

on oddworld this is what i think:

queen

king[?]

sterile male/female slaves

it is possible that there may be other fertile individuals in higher castes than slaves

i reckon that this system is maintained mainly by the glukkons, who keep the majority of the mudokons [and sligs] sterile so that they have total control over the breeding process.

as a sidenote, we know that scrabs at least do not breed this way, but have the same 'pride-type' system as lions [i.e. alpha male, females, subordinate males]. interesting? well, maybe not...

Well I like Biology.
Well if this what sal said was true the life of a queen would be real bad, just like a slave´s one.
With the females on Oddworld it is just the same with the bees: a worker bee has no sexual orgarn. But you said it already

Danny 06-09-2001 06:18 PM

de rien.

oddguy 999 06-09-2001 10:18 PM

I think I herd that with bees and ants all the workers and stuff are female and the only males are short living drones that fly between colenes and mate only once then die...

...So I think maybe Oddworld is a little different.

TheBlueScrab 06-10-2001 12:31 PM

aha! good, good!!! My Alector have problems with aol!! *kreun*.
I can not speak with her!!! *cry*

Joe the Intern 06-10-2001 06:26 PM

i have one thing to say. abe does have genitals. if you watch the video of necrum mines blowing up in AE,abe lands on what appears to me to be a branch. it then shows him being hurt because he landed on his genitals. if ya dont believe me watch it for yourself. this proves that abe is not sterile! :D :D

Alector 06-10-2001 06:26 PM

Danny 06-10-2001 07:09 PM

Joe: didn't you see how far he fell? i think you'd be hurt if you fell that far, whatever you testicular status! Pinky [i think it was] had a similar argument a while ago, but it says on the OW site that he has no genitals. so there.

Oddguy: no, that is a common misconception. in most social hymenopteran species, there is both a king and a queen, together with sterile workers and soldiers, which can be male or female. what you have described IS the case for bumblebees and honeybees, but is true for very few other social hymenopterans.

my goodness, the spam here smells!

Anyway, as with regards to Abe's genitals, didnt any of you read want Alf had to say when aksed about why Abe grimaced if he doesnt have genitals? The force of the blast, like being punched in the arm, was what motivated the pain.

research, it can go a long way
