Out of control bush fire reaches Sydney. . . (Everyone, please read)

If everyone has been keeping up with the news (It seems nobody has been, lately), you would of heard about the bush fire that has gone out of control in southern Australia. The southern part of Australia has now been called a disaster area. The fire, which they say was started by arsonists (they aren't sure), has now reached the suburbs of Sydney. I have recetly found out that quite a lot OF members come from there.
I was wondering how you guys are holding out, and are you all okay? Please respond.

Mud 101, he was talking to the people in Australia, not to you. Anyway, DH, that's horrible news. I hope everyone who does live there is okay.

I live on the outskirts of Sydney, right at the foot of the Blue Mountains, where most of the damage is being done. It's a surreal atmosphere; dull orange sunlight shines through the smoke that has settled along the streets. Looking further up you can see large areas of thick black and red smoke belching from the tops of the mountains, blanketing the sky in darkness. The constant sound of sirens can be heard, with lines of fire trucks squealing by every few minutes. Looking up at the sky you can see helicopters zooming along, large buckets of water dangling underneath them.

I went for a ride in my brother's car earlier, we drove up closer to the devastation but most of the roads have been blocked off. People dot the road-sides outside their houses, watching in awe at the approaching flames.

Yesterday our power went out for a few hours due to the bushfires. Lastnight the internet, cable TV and phonelines went down and didn't come back on until this morning. I hope they're getting it under control. It's much cooler today, and rain is expected after the weekend.

Yeesh, it looks pretty serious. I hope your right about the rain, Syd. My toughts are with you, and hope you make it through this. How far away are you from the fire?

Thats good to hear Sydney, I did hear about a brush fire but I did not know it was in Austraila neither did I know it was so out of controll. I hope everyone that lives around there is ok.

Thanks for the toughts. I'm confident that the fire wont reach here, though. The nearest fires have been less than a kilometer away, but they're under control now. Some of the roadsigns have even been melted away!

That sucks!

I haven't actually seen any of the damage or anything, only had to breathe in the smoke each day and look skywards to see a bright red sun. It's a little scary, but I don't know of anyone who has been hurt.

I live in the Sydney area too more to the south but. I live on the Georges River which is near a place named Helensburugh where some of the fires have started as well.

Where i live it is constantly smelling of smoke, there are alot of ashed leaves floating around, and a strange coloured sunlight.

A few years ago a place even closer to me was under fire and it was very frightening to be so close to such a thing. Its also scaryier that i live in a place surrounded with trees, bushes etc. Our place could go up in flames at any time.

Also note that some of the fires were from assonists setting something ablaze. Its sad to think that people could actually bring themselves do such a thing

hi Sydney. Good that your ok!

Are there any dead so far? I only heard not many about it. HOw are the people? What will happen to the people who lost their houses?

It´s terrible.

abe22 12-28-2001 04:06 AM

I just heard that some of the fires were lit by these three teenagers I hope they get punished and not just let off.
