Oddworld Fan-base

I've been thinking about the future of Oddworld and it's fan-base...
i'd expect that we'd get a HUGE boom of new fans when the Xbox is released...and i'd expect that most of the fans will register with these forums...

i just wondered if people want the fan-base of Oddworld to stay as low-profile as it is and what the effects of this would be...

and, more importantly, whether the forums would be able cope with several thousand more members...

edit: damn, i keep posting in the wrong topic...arghhhhhhhhh

I'd prefer staying low-profile, yes.

Gluk Schmuck 07-31-2001 02:27 PM

i'm also worried about the smaller fan sites...they'd probably crash easier than the big ones...

Black Dragon 07-31-2001 04:12 PM

Yeah, I'd prefer staying low-profile. And what do you mean by the smaller websites crashing?

Gluk Schmuck 07-31-2001 07:56 PM

i mean, that a website on a free server probably won't be able to handle several thousand more visitors at any one time...

by crash, i mean: not work because of too many other people are on the server...

Cloverfield 08-01-2001 04:27 AM

A valid point... with the release of Munch's Oddysee it could get quite scary indeed. With a lot more members here, etc.

I know that some Final Fantasy websites were forced to close or find advertising because the number of visits was costing them too much (i.e. bandwidth wise).

I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens and work it out accordingly. We may have to move the forums to their own server. Who knows.

On the other hand it would be pretty cool to have Oddworld really popular.

i dont want the forums to get too big.right now i know who everyone is and if we had thousands of members wed get lost in the mess!!!

One, Two, Middlesboogie 08-01-2001 10:04 AM

Yes, smaller numbers of members are better because it's easier for us to get to know each other.

Black Dragon 08-01-2001 11:21 AM

Yeah, with smaller amounts of members, everyone knows everyone else and usually we get along pretty well. If we were suddenly swamped with a bunch of new members, that wouldn't happen anymore. :(

Robbo 08-01-2001 11:36 AM

yeah, i would like the forums to stay as low profile as they are and to restrict the number of fans that can get onto it, maybe the number should be around 500

Sexy Slig 08-01-2001 11:41 AM

Low is good...very good, and Munchy, 500s a bit low isn,t it?
Oh yeah, Abebabe, dont you think that Oddworlds rerally popular already?

Cloverfield 08-14-2001 08:23 AM

It would be unfair to restrict people from coming here if it got to be a larger forum with the release of Munch. After all, any Oddworld fan is welcome here.

SexySlig... what I was meaning is more that Oddworld doesn't currently have the huge popularity of some games. It currently has more of a select popularity. This is mainly because there hasn't been a game for a while, so it's the true fans that are the ones that keep looking up info and stuff like that.

I guess I was more comparing the size of our forums with that of say a game like Final Fantasy or Tomb Raider which tend to have massive followings.

Why not make several other oddworld forums.
Each forum could have links to the other.

Like a forum with just the general oddworld topic section, then a forum with the off topic stuff and well, you get the idea.
Although I'm sure their would be more than one problem to that solution.

Oh well, if it does get to crouded I might leave the forums. :( But I guess email and other chatrooms/forums could be optional.

Oh yeah, I know this is off topic but um oddchat is no where near as populated as it was, munch will definately make oddchat more crouded, although it will then end up like other chat rooms, at least 50 people online per day, SHEEESHHH

although it would be unfair to restrict people, i would not want the forums to get too big so mabye low-profile is the way to go. also it would be terrible if the forums got so big that they crashed or if we had to have ads(ads really bug me).

We have the capabilities of adding more sub-forums if we ever need them, but at the moment we are not really big enough to do this.

Like if we had a sub-forum for each of the games (Abe's Oddysee, Abe's Exoddus, Munch's Oddysee and General Oddworld) you would find that you might only get a few posts in each of them.

Plus having more sub-forums on a forum the size of this one can be quite annoying as you have to go from one forum to another.

Probably the worst thing would actually be keeping up with all the posts. As with off-topic lately. Off-topic has actually grown quite a bit. It's usual for a post to go off onto the next page the next day you check in to respond.

yeah that happens to me a lot it is quite irritating.

Danny 08-15-2001 11:04 PM

i don't like the idea of having a separate forum for the different games, because it would make the forums more, well, game-related, i suppose. i mean, as it is, we can have general OW topics, but we couldn't if they were separate. if we did need separate forums, we should have a GD, FC, OT, RPG and Help forums, then in user terms, it would be still the same.

Munch will be released before the end of the year right?
Since there will definately be more fans joining here, does that mean later these forums will get a big overall update sorta thing.
Cause right now I'de say that would be a good idea. Hmmm, why not do an update right now?
You could prepare for the "flood" of fans.
