Your Top 5 Favorite Movies
I know this topic has been done to death, but a constant change of tastes and a steady flow of new members makes it worthwhile. Name your top five favorite films and explain why. In no particular order:
Contact It was an intelligent, unbiased representation of the fight between science and religion. The direction was nice, as was the acting by Jody Foster. The special efects were awe-inspiring, notably the introduction, which did a good job of showing how insignificant we really are. The Labyrinth A timeless classic born in the eighties. It's still good to watch, a shame they don't make movies like this one anymore. Magnolia Magnolia got mixed reviews, with critics usually either loving it or hating it. Negative reviews said it tried too hard to be intellectual, but I thought it was a nice movie about hardships and facing the past. Perhaps I enjoyed it because my expectations were so low? The Edge An excellent adventure movie! I love the feeling of being out in the wilderness, struggling to survive. Anthony Hopkins is in it. Bla, bla, bla. Edward Scissorhands I've liked this since I first saw it as a child. Rather depressing. It shows how some things just don't mesh and should be left the way they were. |
We have a movie in common in our top 5 list, Sydney...
Contact -- Everything Syd said, plus the fact that it is an original story by Carl Seagan. Memento One of the most intriguing films I've seen so far. If you like "noir" films, it's the best. Advice: keep your eyes on the screen, otherwise you won't understand anything at all. Shawshank Redemtion(spell) tim Robins is great actor, and the story of this film will make you fell twisted emotion, ending with a pleasant sens of relief. You will almost be thankfull after watching this movie. Gladiator Yeah, I know, it's a Hollywood blockbuster, but Hell, it was a fantastic movie. Blade RunnerAnother one by Ridley Scott. The actors, the soundtrack by Vangelis, Daryl Hannah, Rugter Hower, Harrison Ford, there are so many reasons to re-watch this movie again and again... Probably this is not my ultimate top 5 list. but they are the ones I can remember right now. [ October 31, 2001: Message edited by: Lampion ] |
I will give a list now, explanation comes later. I don't have much time now.

1. Moulin Rouge
The songs were absolutely amazing (the only reason i haven't bought the soundtrack is because it doesn't have all of the songs on it). The dancing was absolotely amazing. The comedy was amazing. The tragedy was amazing. Everything was amazing...i'm, of cource, going to get it on DVD when i have my Xbox! 2. Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within Beautiful graphics! 3. The Matrix Beautiful visual effects. And nice concept. 4. American Pie 2 lol! 5. The Parole Officer lol...probably the best brittish movie (there aren't many) |
Not much of a movie person, but I'll search into the depths of my mind and try to figure this out.
1. The Green Mile: - What a great movie!! Emotional, profound, suspenseful, EVERYTHING! I loved that movie so MUCH. 2. Gladiator: - Action, suspense, packed with emotion, spiritual... excellent. 3. The Lion King: - What can I say? It's classic! I've loved this Disney movie ever since I saw the first preview for it. 4. Monty Python and the Holy Grail: - Meh heh heh heh.... hilarious. (Eat yer heart out, Melly!) 5. Dragon Heart: - This right here is the thing that got me totally hooked on dragons oh-so-many years ago. Loved it ever since. Cry every time I see Draco die... |
Gladiator: who cant love this movie? ITS GOT EVERYTHING!
The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly: ok so its a western, but its a classic and a good eastwood movie to boot. Monty Python and the Holy Grail: just plain gut-grabbing knee-slapping rolling on the floor laughter. MST3K The Movie: refer to my previous reasons above^. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within: graphics and storyline both blew me away |
Here are mine.. well, hinda, there are so many movies i like..
All Monty Python films- Holy Grail, Meaning of Life, Life of Brian and And now for something completely Different. I know, that's 4 right there, I'm kinda bending the rules. (Oh, yes.. the dragon who is black... I think you are the one who can go eat your heart out now..) Parents- Dark, dark comedy/horror. Horror-comedies rarely blend so well, but this one's outlook is funny, surreal, disturbing and very entertaning. Twelve Monkeys- I love Terry Gilliam. So many say he doesn't make sense, but who has any idea what they're talking about? Fisher King-To quote Nny... "Gilliam is God." Barton Fink- Great Coen brothers movie about a man who has an immense case of writer's block... Another surreal film that I like... I would have put MST3K:The movie on my list, but I have seen about 30 MST3K episodes better than it. Final Sacrifice, Manos:The Hands of Fate, Pod People, Atomic Brain, Mitchell, Teenagers From Outerspace, Teenage Caveman, Eegah, ect.. So many more movies I like, but those are some of my favorites that first came to mind. (though I actually have 9 up there) |
I like to many movies Its hard to choose these are my favourite 1's though in no order
Joes apartment: Talking and singing roaches funny. The Labyrinth: I like this movie i dont know why I just do Shawshank Redemtion: Yes i thought too this movie was good. Back to the furture 1 2 and 3: I love back to the future its cool. The shinning: I thought this movie was cool too |
teminator 2 :) :) :)
saving private ryan :) :) :) back to the future 1,2,3 :) |
I don't watch a lot of movies, nor TV for that matter, and I don't even think that I have five favorites, but here they are:
John Carpenter's "Christine": John Carpenter is known for his horror movies, and I like this one from the early eighties based upon Stephen King's novel. Probably because I love all classic cars and this movie stars a demonic 1958 Plymouth Fury, tailfins and all. Wrongfully Accused: One of Leslie Nielsen's best! I like off-the-wall comedy and this movie is a shining example. I love the part where he jumps out of the way of the train, over 50 feet into the air, just to land in the woods on a bicycle with no seat! Pure Gold!! The Fifth Element: Good Sci-Fi movie. I like movies with cool looking alien creatures, namely the mangalores. |
My five favorite movies are:
* Terminator 2 * The Matrix * Back to the Future part 2 and 3 * Starship Troopers * Spawn I've always been a big fan of sci-fi movies. :D [ November 01, 2001: Message edited by: Naxos ] |
hmm... this is a tricky one... i think i will have to cheat and say 5...
|
OK, this is just something I don't want to do. Pick out 5 movies... what the heck.
1. The matrix: I love this movie. It really makes you think. Or maybe it's just me having a small brain. 2. X-men: Well, this really touched me. It's cool, kinda sad and very funny. 3. The nightmare before cristmas: I was expecting this to be funny... and it was. I love the songs, I love the story, I love the characters and I love the idea. Why? Watch it and see. 4. Titan A.E: Well, this was cool. Not as cool as I expected it to be, but it was enough for me. The movie was surprising, very surprising... 5. The lion king: I have always loved it, I love it and I always will. Reason unknown. |
Requiem For A Dream: Probably the most depressing movie I've ever seen. It is by Darren Arnofsky, and it's about how drugs can ruin your life. You MUST see this film.
Memento: Watch it twice! (No, seriously, you'll probably need to in order to understand some of the story.) It's a great film with one of the most original plots ever. The Matrix: What can I say? It's a classic! Dumb and Dumber: I love Jim Carrey movies, and Dumb and Dumber and Ace Ventura are probably his two best. I never get tired of watching this movie. Ace Ventura 1: Tied with Dumb and Dumber as the two funniest Jim Carrey movies. And I think I'll do a sixth, since it would be unfair to leave it out... Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back: I knew it would be funny, but man... It was hilarious! This is a MUST-SEE movie for anyone who likes laughing! And AAAH! How could I forget...? Austin Powers 1 and 2: This is some funny shiznat! [ November 01, 2001: Message edited by: Daniel Brown ] |
Blade:
Cool character, decent special effects...ACE!!! Alien: Spooky, good acting, controlled action, EXCELLENT!!! Aliens: The sequels more of a shoot em up but its still ace! Gladiator: Breathtaking scale! Great fights and acting! American Beauty: This film surprised me on how good it was. I thought it wuold be a bit like American Pie. |
1. Gladiator- exellent film
2. Matrix- a modern classic 3. The Thin Red Line- Phillosifical war film 4. American beauty- deep, deep film (surprisingley) 5. SCARY MOVIE- funny spoof. (i'd write more but i've got no time!) |
Whew, trying to pare it down to 5:
It's really unfair to be kept to only 5 maybe breaking it down by genre would help. :D :p |

Blade Runner Blue Velvet Empire Strikes Back 5000 fingers of doctor T Mon oncle |
Couldn't we have 10? This is hard. I loved Contact, too, Sydney.
Off the top of my head, and heavily influenced by the list of great movies in this thread: Terminator (the original) Godfather I & II Blade Runner Back to the Future Time Bandits I don't have much time for explanation, but these are great stories. Except for Godfather, classic sci-fi and action aplenty. You've got to love the time-travel twists in BTTF. Time Bandits is a hoot -- it is a Monty Python influenced if not produced movie -- highly recommended if you like that sort of thing. Struggling. Can't . . . leave . . . it . . . at . . . 5! Aliens (all of them) -- some of the best sci-fi movies ever; scariest aliens ever. Terminator 2 -- great sci-fi. Bull Durham - funny real (mostly) look into minor league baseball Field of Dreams -- I admit it, I love baseball, but this fantasy is about more than baseball. Any Die Hard movie. -- Action aplenty. 'Nough said. Aaaaaggggggghhhhhh! Next 5? [ November 06, 2001: Message edited by: Doug ] |
