Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi Discussion (Spoilers)
Hey, did ya see that new SW movie?
I think it somehow became even more polarizing than SW7 was. Some themes were cool, like the concept of Ben Swolo's struggle and grey morality but they were so poorly executed. I was surprized to see him proposing to abolish the Empire/Jedi organizations and think of something better - "Finally something both cool in original in the series" - I though. Of course the Disney stakeholders and toy makers wouldn't want to make any risks, so Rey had to decline, making the endless stupid circle of incompetent Sith vs hypocritical Jedi continue forever. The mediocre writing was all over the place. Maybe by just calling it "mediocre", I'm giving it too much credit, as at some places it went to Batman & Robin movie level of stupidity. (You know which scene it was) The movie surely is bad if it makes you think of Batman & Robin. Not to mention plot holes as big as the one in Imperial Ship torn into two by a ship going into light speed. Turns out the Rebels had the ultimate weapon throughout the whole 8 movies and only know they decided to actually use it. Man, the previous 7 movies are so rendered pointless. Not as pointless as the entire Finn+Asian Sidekick Diversity Fill Character subplot that took a big chunk of the movie that could've been used better, like e.g. for making the important scenes better-paced (When watching the movie I got the feeling that cool scenes lasted for a way too short time, to make space for the bad ones) Porgs are unsignificant. No reason to hate them. Chewbacca was pointless. Phasma was pointless. They killed Ackbar just like that. There was little tension in the movie, you don't feel like the bad characters are any menacing when they act like they suffered brain damage. Snoke was a mistake. The movie was a mess. It was enjoyable to watch, if you don't expect a good movie. It gives you a lot food for thought when it comes to bad design. You question movie's logic a lot in this movie. I could go on and on about it... Let's hear your opinions, instead. The above was just, like, my opinion ;) |
I liked it. I agree the casino filler was pretty boring, and the Leia scene was sooo stupid, but I still think it was pretty great.
The lightspeed thing doesn't seem to be a plot hole to me, it makes sense (huge metal thing going that fast has to do a ton of damage) and the Rebels don't really seem to be the kind of people to build ships and then sacrifice them and the pilots just to destroy one enemy ship. |
But that one enemy ship (the huge imperial destroyer) destroys dozens if not hundreds of rebel ships...
Also, I doubt that you can't just automate the ship to jump without a pilot ;) |
i haven't actually watched SW 7 or 8 but
:
maybe i'm just a miserable old cunt but i think the old star wars and disney shit was so much better than the crap they churn out today. the original 3 SW films were great, watched them as a kid. same with the old disney shit with skilled well-worked animation and moralistic story-telling like bambi, pinocchio, lion king etc. then JAR JAR BUNKS appeared and we all tried to kill it as soon as we saw it but it got away man. the fucker got away, flopping away from us on his big gangly legs saying "meesa so scared!" as we fired shots after the bastard, but it turns out we all have terrible aim and mister binks survived. god damn it. the phantom menace and the rest that followed i didn't think were anything near as fun as the previous SW films, mainly because nostalgia and han solo. then they made 7 and 8 and i was long past caring. they're just milking the franchise at this point and they don't care how obvious it is. same goes for modern day disney in general, the shite i see advertised by them nowadays is fucking bollocks. BUT there's one thing that's remained constant for disney throughout the years; all the Toy Story films are fucking great and always will be. |
Well, I think we all agree that the prequels were highly flawed, but I gotta give it to them: At least they properly establish plot and character motivation and it makes sense to some degree. Unlike The Last Jedi.
|
I can't be the only one who genuinely enjoyed the prequels for what they were
|
You're not the only one. I did like SW3. A lot. But it *is* flawed :D
|
Honestly, I was perfectly happy with it. The parts that people were upset with I either wrote off to space magic, or just plain didn't have a problem with.
Oh, and the prequels are absolute garbage with the occasional watchable fight scene. |

Seriously though, I'll never understand the hate for the prequels. Sure they had their flaws (hello Annie) and there was Jar-Jar, but the worldbuilding and atmosphere is phenomenal for the time imho, and I loved how the plot was structured out. |

edit: not to mention again the single ship was basically the entire rebel fleet |
