Brew withdrawal fatal after 48h

Wait, wait.. So if the mudokons don't get more brew, they die? Or is it if they get too much they die?

Xavier 10-02-2017 04:17 AM

The first one... No brew during 48 hours and they should die.

Wow.. no pressure on Abe to save his friends (assuming they keep that part in the game)

I wonder then did the mechanic of Abe drinking brew himself remain (yes I mean the very puzzles)? I'll probably earn paranoia if there will be timer counting minutes before he dies (absolutely sure there won't be any 48 hours) if no bottles left and we need to find next automat. I hate timers with all fibres of my soul since Sonic from Mega Drive. And minutes will end as fast as timer from game Rain World (pc) - this is my personal nightmare.

If done right that sounds like an extremely cool mechanic, but that's just me. Just having a timer for the sake of a timer is obviously a bad way to go about it.

Yes a bit pressure for player is good. But it should not be: "Oh, no no no, timer's almost out, I do not wont my darling Abe die, and retry puzzle I'm playing now from the beginning". I really appreciate my character and my nerves, do not want to run by circles wildly, like I do in that Rain World: "My God we all gonna drown! Where is my bunker?! Where is that *** glowing thing who should show me the right way??! Get this carnivorous giant lizards out of my way!!!" XD

I always assumed the reason Abe doesn't get sick from it (or in Soulstorm, doesn't die from it), is because he drinks brew AFTER he gets his healing power. Maybe it gives him an immunity to it?

Still, don't know if they'll actually keep it in. The timer thing wouldn't be fun :/

i just put it down to him being a zombie

ADMIN NOTE: split this conversation from the ARG thread.

I guess Abe will have to find some kind of antidote for the Muds he rescues. Maybe something like the healing rings he had in Exoddus.

Or something completely new, it's a new game after all. :p

Well in the new Soulstorm artwork, Abe does still have his chest scar. Will that still grant him the power to heal the sick, or will it be rewritten to provide a different power?

I thought about that too. Tho I'm not so sure if they'll give Abe a completely different power. It'd be cool if his chest scar doesn't heal just the ones sick from brew, but rather physical injuries as well. The catch would be that Abe wouldn't be able to heal himself with it.

According to one of the Dear Alf sections from a long time ago Abe did actually get addicted after Exoddus, it just wasn't shown.

What I think would actually make for an interesting mechanic is one where drinking Brew gives Abe some sort of advantage or easier way to solve puzzles, but doing so in the presence of other Mudokons will diminish morale. Similar to Lorne's statement that a perfect run would include not killing any Sligs. It could also include not drinking any Brew.

SkullFire58 10-04-2017 09:37 AM

I seem to remember Lorne talking about giving the chest tattoo some changes sometime during the EGX presentation, but I can't find it. He might have just been talking about the visual changes and detail they're able to add now.

Xavier 10-04-2017 10:01 AM

The five horizontal bars in the middle of the tattoo used to represent the five quintology heroes. I wonder what their significance will be now.

Maybe they'll represent Abe's journey? Like, his freedom from rupture farms, and now this.

I was thinking maybe Soulstorm will have same mechanic like in old Fallout games. You can use chems to boost your stats but they can make you chem reliant, so all substances you take have some immediate consequences or later on in the game. So it's all about balancing managing what you take.

Maybe Abe can sustain the brew to some extent but you can choose to use it more to solve puzzles, fight enemies etc. but if abused Abe might get addicted to the brew.

Sounds like a JoJo reference to me.

That's the second time someone has told me that here, and I don't even watch JoJo.

SilverTwilight05 10-11-2017 06:19 PM

Maybe Abe's healing power will remove death as a consequence of withdrawal, but Alf's tea helps the muds recover from the physical addiction.
