Was spooce simply a gameplay mechanic or is there lore behind it?

Like most things on Oddworld, it started as a mechanic but is now part of the lore.

We don't really know anything about it beyond what was said in the game, though.

Just retcon the entire game (which is likely to happen anyway). I personally hope never to see Munch again. Quite possibly the stupidest and lamest character ever conceived in gaming.

I blame the game. It was way too rushed and was missing most of its content. We didn't get to see a lot of Munch's personality or any good skills he might have had.

I'm seeing Dany Rand each time someone mentions "Chi" now. Iron fist killed that word for me.

Speak for yourself, I consider very little from MO part of the lore, Spooce least of all.

I can’t see “Chi” as “chee” or “Key”.. I can’t help but see it as “chy”.. coz it’s (chi) the shortened name of my hometown lol

i think the main thing is there seem to be no products you could make out of Spooce everything in Oddworld seems to be profitable apart from the Spooces

Here lies the diametric inherent in the philosophy of Oddworld games, regardless of whether we accept Spooce as canon or not. It's not that Spooce is inherently useless but rather that this form of "spiritual currency" serves no real purpose in the late capitalist society that industrial residents of the Oddworld society find themselves in.

Looking into what lore we know of Soulstorm and the missed opportunities of Munch's Oddysee (and Hand Of Odd), we see "Spooce" or "Chi" being incredibly useful. Just not in the our current traditional sense of Money = Product.

i always thought the quama system was the spiritual currency of oddworld

It's essentially the exact same thing.
