Something weird in Oddchat. . . (admins, please read)
Okay, the topic has been changed to "!seen nick" and there are two other people in the room named abe_bot and slig_bot. They don't appear to be talking to each other or anything, but it seems weird. . . Maybe somebody should check it out.

Bots are little script programs used in chat rooms to do some simple tasks like monitoring and maintainance, think of them as the agents of The Matrix, the movie, well...not exactly like that...
I'm sure Sydney or Abe babe has something to do with it. |
Bad news is we lost OddChat again. :(
Basically the server we host OddChat on is just a standard IRC server. Anyone can register a chat room but if any of the Admins (person who registered) don't go into the room for 14 days then the room gets dropped and anyone else can register it. The problem with this is that me and Sydney don't visit enough in order to keep it up. We try, but it seems to slip through. For a while we had Pacen as a chat room mod, as he used to visit all the time. And although he didn't have to do much, he kept the registration going. But Pacen's not around anymore, so the problem has occurred again. Bad news is now, these guys have registered the room and we can't get it back until it drops off again. They're Oddworld fans, but not forum members (although I wouldn't like to be associated w/ fans that steal a site's chat room). These are the same guys who had hijacked the room before, but last time they didn't register so we just had to wait for them to leave. Unfortunately we can't do anything since they've registered it and are sitting in it. Here's our options as I see it and need to discuss with Sydney: - Look for a different chat server that doesn't have this 14 day problem - Register a different room name - Appoint a trusted member of the forums to be chat room moderator who visits the chat room frequently to avoid it dropping. - Get a Bot program ourselves (may not work as I think you need a PC constantly connected to the net to use it) I was actually alerted to the fact the other day, but by the time I could get there it was too late. IMO the IRC system is pretty poor... I can understand the dropping of rooms (as otherwise there would be many cloggng up their servers unused), but 14 days is way too short a period IMO. Abe Babe... Hey, I have an idea. Since most of use use MSN Messenger anyway, why don't we all use that instead? i'm sure one of use could sort out some scheme or soemthing. . .

to be honest, not that many people use Oddchat anyway, so it isn't going to make much difference. people can still use the room, can't they? and it's still owned by Oddfans, so i don't really think it's too bad a problem... of course i know nothing about the running things side of things, so it may be more complicated than that...

Yeah, that's why i quit using it because the weirdest people go there. They are like, I see the light and crap like that.

It's more the fact that it's a chat room for Oddworld fans to meet.
DH... problems with using MSN as an OddChat... 1. Not everyone has it 2. Not everyone can install it 3. Limit to the number of people that can join any session. MSN is great for chatting w/ forum friends, but just could never be used as the main chat room. Also, when Munch is released, we will probably find more people visiting. True they are Oddworld fans there, but I've seen them ban people before for no reason (it happened to me once before). Not really what you want in a chat room that anyone should be able to use. Plus what's the use of having a chat room on your site if the site owners can't run it themselves. It's just lucky we don't have any chats with OWI coming up. Abe Babe... I'm a regular user of OddChat. I find that jam, Alector and Big Bro Munch are the most regular people there when I visit. I'm not trying to boast, but...ahem. Ah well, I gave it a shot.

The abe_bot appears to have been replaced by 'modjo'. This is just an observation - if modjo is a real user, then I'm sorry. The slig_bot has just disappeared. If you try to send a private message to either modjo or slig_bot you end up with a message in Oddchat something like:

Ah crap, guys I'm sorry, looks like carven got us again :( I actually went there about a week ago and the channel was empty and still registered but I discovered I was no longer moderator so I don't think I helped the registration. I wish I could help get it back but I don't think there's much chance of that happening. However you decide to deal with the problem, good luck.

move the chatroom. I just went in, and i found abe bot and slig bot. they just sitting in. somebody using dsl i think.

Ok, here's something weird for ya....I'm not in OddChat, but somehow Alector is talking to me through a private OddChat window!! Apparently I'm showing up in OddChat...what's going on?!

That's happened to me before. I was in Oddchat, and I accidently got kicked out of it when my computer crashed. When i came back online, I must of been still signed into Oddchat, and when I went in there after a guest talked to me, I appeared as another guest, as I tried talking to myself. Weird.

i never EVER go to oddchat. its just boring in there. i like the forums much better.

Yes, I noticed they'd gone. Alector told me (in a private chat) that they'd left about Friday.

Ok, the bots are gone, but so is everyone else. It's because off the different time zone's I never meet the American folks, and there are not that much European Oddchat users. (ok, I met Freaky once!)
