Munch's Oddysee on Steam Update

http://store.steampowered.com/app/15740

:

Hi all.

Due to community feedback, we've built and today released a new port of Munch's Oddysee, replacing the current one, alongside a pack of trading cards, badges, backgrounds and emotes.

The new port will be maintained by us and developers Square One. It contains multiple fixes and some 'HD' assets including higher resolution character models.

You can read about the development of the new port during its previous beta phase, and leave us feedback, here:

Should you wish to return to the old port, which is no longer maintained, you can opt into the 'original' branch via properties > betas in the Steam client for the game.

Thanks for being fans!

Has anyone played it yet? Is it noticeably different?

I've been following the feedback thread and people say it's noticeably more stable and playable. Now that it's official I'll go try it myself.

I'm playing it now! I haven't played the original PC release, but I have played the original Xbox version. Things I noticed:

> Controller support works well.
Although the screen to set up all the controls is confusing and looks really cheap

> Better models and textures
When you interact with a message stone and it has a screenshot from the original game there, the difference is VERY clear

> Inclusion of walk/run button
Thank god because Abe ran way too fast originally

> It obviously isn't 100% complete
A lot of the message/tutorial stones still reference stuff like 'Black Button' from the original game, and reference the original control scheme even though its been changed

> The menu looks like shit
Very obviously still the original. Very compressed. Abe and Munch in the middle very obviously just a movie file and not an actual model. And the loading screen is much higher res than the rest of the menu which is a bit jarring

Overall, it's alright. It isn't perfect, but it's getting there. The audio quality for abes voice is strangely low quality, and I'd like to see some improvements made to how movement works (ie, get rid of the annoying auto-movement thing the game does when you get too close to a wall). Not perfect. Not as good as the HD version on PS3 from what I've seen. But certainly playable.

Yeah I agree with everything Fraki said. With the addition that the audio mix really needs work. I do not remember Munch's bouncing with a horde of Fuzzles following him sounded that fucking loud or annoying.

Also, as far as I know it lacks the resolution/AA options original port had

FrustratedAssassin 07-26-2016 08:53 AM

Yeah, it just defaults to your screen's native resolution.

Fraki 07-26-2016 11:28 AM

Oh yeah and the fuzzles still look awful

Like jumping from the main cutscene introducing them to the in-game model

I laughed so hard

It's hard to imagine how that sound could have gotten more annoying than the original, so I suspect that's your memory playing up. :p

Oddworld Inhabitants released a post saying what improvements will be made in the future!

1 - better quality audio (audio is currently compressed, we'll fix that)
2 - integrating the newer sound effects from "Munch's Oddysee HD"
3 - default brightness and gamma tweaks to better match the original
4 - switching the movies back to their original aspect ratio (and thus bringing in black bars at the sides)

Seems like a good start :) Personally I would like the camera axis inverting to be fixed? Like, by default its set to be inverted, so pressing right swings the camera left, etc. But if you turn this off, then the aiming for stuff like gun sligs and snoozers is inverted! So pressing left makes you aim right, its super annoying

I think it has more to do with the mentioned audio mix being terrible. There's a terrible balance in volume between different sounds. You can be playing at a relatively good volume, but then once you find some Fuzzles the bouncing sound is twice as loud as everything else.

I experienced this with the Mudokons chanting aswell.

On another note I encountered a "game breaking" bug towards the end of the first level that I dont recall in the original MO

The bounce powerup would stop working and not work even if I tried the vendor again, reloaded a quicksave and it did, got over the wall and found out that the espresso only worked for 5 seconds before the same happened to it

I imagine if this happens to some powerups in later levels it may be more game breaking

I had the same thing happen with the Espresso in my game too! Though thankfully that area is easy enough that you can get by just jumping around like a loon

Still no German Language ? I thought you'll gonna bring german language to Munch Oddysee ... its still in development and when you will bring it out to german lanugage?

Havoc 07-31-2016 07:04 AM

I wouldn't hold my breath.

Edit: Oh they added the HD audio mix and a lot of the really annoying cartoony sounds are gone! Munch now flops around like a plunger and Abe doesn't trigger 20 different cartoon bounce sounds when he falls down.

Amazing!
