:

We’re delighted to announce that – in partnership with Black Screen Records – Oddworld Inhabitants will be offering a collector’s edition audiophile 180 gram vinyl soundtrack for Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty.

Release date, pricing and how you’ll be able to get one of these exclusive collector’s items will all be revealed in due course, but we can today reveal the track-listing, which contains all-new never-heard-before remasters of music from Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty and new mixes from the original 1997 classic Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee.

This is an insta-buy for me without a doubt.

Xavier 09-22-2015 11:11 AM

I love it already, can't wait to have to listen to it. :D

Varrok 09-22-2015 11:11 AM

Wow, they add the game as the bonus for the soundtrack.

...

Seems they've got their priorities straight.

Yeah, usually it's the other way round. xD

I guess OWI is turning into a record label for ambient music now.

STM 09-22-2015 11:57 AM

Fuck. Oddworld on my record player?

Fucccck.

Vlam 09-22-2015 12:36 PM

I know, before reading this thread, that Varrok or Nepsotic will try to say something "snarky".

Havoc 09-22-2015 01:08 PM

Call me crazy but releasing a vinyl record in this day and age seems a bit... weird. I get the collectors idea behind it but I can't say, even as a fan, that the NnT is anything remotely worthy to being a physical collectible.

Your crazy. :D A lot of people still love vinyl. Sure it's not the main form of music media nowadays, but that hasn't stopped anyone enjoying them.

Also. It depends on what you define "worthy" as. Do you mean the type of music? Cause in my books. Anything is worthy of a physical release. So I say why the heck not?

Job McYossie 09-22-2015 01:45 PM

What's your point ? An Abe action figure is as useless.

Varrok 09-22-2015 02:08 PM

No, vinyls still have a solid fanbase. And that's coming from a guy who doesn't use vinyls at all.

Also, you shouldn't take my previous post too seriously. It was just an attempt to be funny by acting over-the-top.

I've never found the music in Oddworld extremely amazing. It fits the game world and as a score it sounds okay, but none of the soundtracks Oddworld has ever put out is something that will blow you away IMO. Nothing close to the soundtracks of say Mass Effect, BioShock, Fallout... Even though I'd easily mention Oddworld in the same line of games for the amazing story telling. It's just that the soundtracks have always been extremely generic and bland IMO.

To put it differently; I listen to a lot of soundtracks from games and movies and such. Far more than any other type of music. And while I do have all of the Oddworld music in my library, I can't remember the last time I actually listened to them because I honestly don't like listening to them without playing the game.

So you are a fan of Oddworld because... you like the gameplay (especially Nnt's one) ?

Nepsotic 09-22-2015 08:07 PM

I'll try and get my hands on the vinyl even though I have no record player. I would like it if they released a CD too, just so I have something physical which I can also use.
Must admit I flipped my shit when I first saw them announce this.

He saying he likes the storytelling, I think.

AO's soundtrack is really enjoyable for me and I used to actually listen to the intro theme quite a lot.

Vinyls are actually making somewhat of a comeback. Im excited that were finally getting some Oddmerch :D

kjjcarpenter 09-23-2015 01:21 PM

Would you say vinyls are making a comeback as merchandise, rather than a niche, impractical, hipster alternative of listening to music? I know JB-HiFi has quite a large vinyl section, but I'd definitely argue that they are more used as collector's items, to be appreciated without being played.

They are pretty cool though!

Nepsotic 09-23-2015 02:41 PM

A lot of DJs have started using them again. I think it's just a hipster phase.

Vlam 09-23-2015 03:48 PM

Who came up with this idea, Lanning ?

Is it a lazy collector ?

Nate 09-23-2015 08:55 PM

I assume that this is going to get a digital release as well? That hasn't been officially stated so far as I can tell.

I've been seeing records sprouting out everywhere lately. I think it's a combination of the price of records being pressed going down, hipsters being hipstery, and a new form of collectable merch.

A bit of both, but more the former.

The latter, unfortunately. Although I, among a few others just collect them, not use them as our main source of audio.

Well, it's like books and newspapers nowadays. The sales will never be as high as they were, it's just the most loyal consumers now.

Well, it's like books and newspapers nowadays. The sales will never be as high as they were, it's just the most loyal consumers now.

Actually, that's incorrect, at least in Australia. Brick-and-mortar sales for books are currently significantly higher than digital sales, and far in excess of the doomsday predications from the turn of the Century. Once Borders/Angus & Robertson closed down, everyone thought it was the end, but the real problem was that the prices in those stores were just too high and they tried to pull a few scams with their gift cards that didn't bode too well for their future either.

Likewise, everyone who doesn't work in the newspaper industry thinks that the sale of the physical edition had plummeted. It's like a goddamned broken record—to use a not-so-clever pun—I hear every single day. I'm currently the manager for the distribution of the two largest newspapers in Sydney's western suburbs, and we have only lost about 15% of home delivery sales in the past 15 years, but the price of the paper has increased by 40% to combat those figures, so it really hasn't affected the industry at all. We still average about 10,000 sales per suburb, per week. It's nowhere near what the industry did in the 70's and 80's, but we're still well above target. The territory adjacent to mine just sold for $300,000, and their sales are around a quarter-less than mine.

I do think most people prefer to have something physical when it comes to reading. Although the Kindle is fantastic, and I can't praise it enough, I'll never give up my actual books because it is a far superior experience. Music, however, in my opinion, whether you're using a vinyl, or a CD, or a digital file, all comes out of a speaker in the end.

Of course, now I'm the guy on the wrong side of the fence, trying to tell the owner how to trim their garden. Each to their own! :)

Varrok 09-24-2015 02:42 AM

Hm. I really don't know about Australia. I shouldn't have generalized.

Though, I don't read newspapers at all, just the news from the web. My friends do the same. I think in about 20 years when people like me will be of the same age as the default target for newspapers, the share of newspapers might drastically decrease

Also, I don't remember my parents reading any newspapers in years, and if you ask me, they represent an average family perfectly

We're kind of backwards down here, haha. The culture here has always considered the newspaper apart of its core DNA though I think, especially the Sunday paper.

But I would have to agree. Due to the advent of the internet, most likely in another generation, the newspapers will become a niche market if they continue at all. The news is at least a day old, especially now that they've discontinued the afternoon paper, and there's really very little sense of extended worth out of them. Something like a vinyl, however, even if it is very hipster-esque, will always have a place in the hearts and minds of those who appreciate them.

Although I do feel sorry for this one client I know who still gets the paper delivered everyday to collect his phantom comic strip. I don't know what he would do if the papers ever died, though I guess he could come here and wallow in self-pity like the rest of us.

Also, if there's anyone from Oddworld Inhabitants browsing, can you confirm or deny for all of us non-hipsters if there will be a digital release? :)

STM 09-24-2015 09:30 AM

To be honest I love listening to my vinyls. I've just started a small varied collection, mostly post-rock or pre-80s rock. We have a really good set up so the sound quality is really good, especially new vinyls where you don't have the rustling noise from scratches on the notches.

Nepsotic 09-24-2015 10:23 AM

A lot of the noise and distortion is due to dust and shit in the grooves.

Crashpunk 09-24-2015 10:56 AM

I find the rustling sounds from an old record oddly satisfying. It makes the music feel more genuine and real. I just have a thing with older stuff that is likely older than me still working today. There's a nice value to that. Hence why I have a retro game collection.

Nepsotic 09-24-2015 12:20 PM

Not really satisfying to an audiophile, though. That's why I find the new vinyl craze weird. Sure it's analogue so it's possible to listen at insanely high sample rates, but nobody records at said sample rates and even if they did the distortion kind of ruins the whole point.

That is the most hipster thing you may have ever said.

I like vinyl because it looks cool and listening to it is a novelty.
