I was skimming the Oddworld Wiki when suddenly ...

:

The first prototype of the 'wings' were actually wing-like (As seen in the intro of Abe's Exoddus) not helicopter blades. Why this was changed was the old wings had many problems. Such as, the flying slig in the beginning of Exoddus had the older wings. He claims, "Something smells." before flying off, a few seconds later there is a explosion. The smell was the lubricant in the wings failing, the wings stopped moving, and the slig crashed and exploded.

We all know the Oddworld Wiki is a cesspool of erroneous supposition and poor syntax, but I was generally curious whether there is any validity to this statement at all, perhaps in the Art book, or if the author was simply slipping his (or her) headcanon into the page. It just sounds so outrageous that it could possibly be true.

There are sketches of Sligs with wing-like flying mechanics, yes.

Interesting! Although I was more referring to the "explanation" of the Flying Slig from the Exoddus introduction dying off-screen.

It’s true: http://oddworldlibrary.net/toe/FAQ#D...icopter_blades

On a sidenote, starting today I'm an admin on the Oddworld Wiki. So if there's anything in particular you think needs work, let me know and maybe I can fix it.

kjjcarpenter 09-08-2015 07:16 AM

Cheers, Manco. I had a feeling there was a spark of truth written in there.

If I come across anything of particular note, I will definitely send it your way, Havoc. :) I think, most importantly, there just needs to be a thorough proofread of the Wiki. I know that's obviously a work-in-progress, but so much of the information is soured by the often remedial grammar of a dozen contributors. If I find some free time, I might do a little bit of editing myself to help clear it up.

I'm assuming the plans to start a new wiki never came to fruition then?

I'm surprise, kjjcarpenter, that you didn't know.

Hmm. That's strange. Virgin Media blocks the Oddworld Library on my end. Thinks it's got malware on it.

I might make an account and see If I can sort some stuff out as well. Overall though, I just think it needs more articles. I see a lot of links which don't have pages.

Paul 09-08-2015 08:18 AM

Hmm the slig at the start always looked the same to me, anyone have a screen shot of it?

Xavier upgraded his own wiki site and I've been working at making the Wikia a little more presentable. Don't think there was ever a solid plan to start a third one.

BY the way, I've never heard this before. It doesn't cite any sources either. Anyone know if it's true or not?
:

The new mask style was developed and introduced when, following investigation into the soaring numbers of Slig suicides, the visor model was found to have an optical misalignment that resulted in the Sligs’ vision being doubled, as though they were pulling cross eyes. This caused many accidental falls from high ledges and into heavy machinery.

Message Xav and Wil about it so they know to investigate.

I remember Alf saying something about this. I'll let you search TOL to find the quote.

Q: Why have the Sligs eyes changed? In Abe's Oddysee the Sligs had a visor sort of thing going across their face, and in Exoddus they have proper eyes. Please explain.

Alf: The Slig suicide rate soared during the time those visors were issued. Sligs began walking off high ledges and stumbling into bone-crunching machinery more and more often. Studies showed that those first visors had a small optical misalignment that caused the wearer's eyes to become crossed. Vykkers scientists quickly modified the equipment and Slig suicides have subsequently evened out.

Havoc, well done on becoming admin on the Oddworld Wikia, I had a quick look and it looks like it improved quite a bit. I'm curious, as an admin how much freedom do you have to play with the different Wiki settings?

It's true I was trying to launch my own version of the Oddworld Wiki on the Oddworld Library but it took more time then anticipated and with much less content to start with I don't think it would have stood a chance against the wikia anyway. Also when I was trying to get it off the ground life kicked me pretty badly in the teeth leaving me with no time or energy to work on it anymore. I guess it shows that it's perhaps not the smartest move trying to start a community driven site all on my own :p

I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to it but I will investigate (read: ask Wil to do it) why it's flagged as containing malware. Right now I'm thinking in re-purposing it as a place to host interviews and articles about Oddworld but to be frank I'm not entirely sure about that.

Havoc 09-14-2015 07:27 AM

Being a Wikia you get the freedom within their platform the basically change the look of the Wiki and of course the content. There's a few modules you can turn off and on but I think the real power settings are under lock and key, though you can contact Wikia directly and ask for certain features.

The only think that irks me about Wikia is not being able to change the retardedly large font size they started using a while ago.

That's what I was afraid of. But hey, it has active users and exposure :)
