Pen and Paper Games

I'm about to play my first session of Dungeons and Dragons, and am pretty damn excited to do so. I've always respected the game for its massive influence, but never really imagined myself playing it, for a number of reasons. Mostly because it's hard to get everyone together around a table, due to work, distance, school, etc.

But now I realize we don't have to worry about that because of the internet! So now I'm just wasting some time, sitting here in anticipation and a little bit of anxiety. First DnD session of (probably) many... it's big, dude.

Has anyone here played DnD or similar pen-and-paper role playing games? Any funny, awful, or otherwise memorable stories to tell? Let's get super nerdy here, folks.

Varrok 04-11-2015 10:39 AM

At some point I was making one. Then I turned 5 and started to think p'n'p games are stupid.

Mr. Bungle 04-11-2015 10:46 AM

Oh, come on. You like metal and think p'n'p games are stupid? The two go together like... like you and being a cunt :)

Varrok 04-11-2015 10:53 AM

Far apart? I know

Crashpunk 04-11-2015 10:56 AM

I've only played Pathfinder and I enjoyed the fuck outta it. Such a great laugh. We spend an entire day playing and eventually completing was one of the default campaigns provided for us but we made our own characters up and incorporated them into it.

I played a Dwarf Fighter named Thunderkeg. I ended up being the tank and doing pretty much all of the damage. I was very close to death at the end though. We also had a half-elf ranger, a bard and a wizard who ended up turning against us and was quickly murdered. I can't remember that much of the story honestly. A lot went on. We basally found a fallen angle and helped her defeat some demon.

I can't RP for shit, and I did find it difficult taking my mates seriously when they were role playing. But whatever, It was all good fun. I'd do it again anyday.

STM 04-11-2015 11:06 AM

I played quite a lot of pbp RPG a few years ago, which is somewhat similar to pnp minus the stats, I suppose it's more story based but yeah, I've played text RPGs.

I really wanted to give Call of Cthulhu a go but the gaming group I set up fell apart before we could so much as kick off the preliminary campaign.

MeechMunchie 04-11-2015 05:03 PM

I remember that. I was like a Livonian immigrant called Sergev or something.

Phylum 04-11-2015 05:06 PM

I have a friend I keep talking with about starting a pnp group but I literally have no idea where to get started.

Bullet Magnet 04-12-2015 02:06 PM

Either find a group/player who knows what they're doing, or just get your group together and start here http://dnd.wizards.com/dungeons-and-dragons.

My group got busy and hasn't been able to play for a while, though when we all went skiing together we ran a short campaign in the evenings. Skiing and DnD with friends for a week in the Alps. Fucking marvellous.

My group has a party consisting of:

An annoying eladrin (elfy-elf) warlock who teleports out of danger at the drop of a hat and takes advantage of his limited sleep requirements to prank the party mercilessly, particularly:

The bumbling human mage who doesn't really get "adventuring" who constantly sets off traps and generally spends his combat rounds brewing peppermint tea instead of casting any of his impressive selection of spells at the enemy, and frequently needs assistance from:

A dwarf cleric who doesn't seem to know who or where he is and only barely manages to keep the rest of us alive, unfortunately including:

An incredibly sleazy human rogue and "respectable tradesman" who despite being one of the few party members with any competance in a fight continues to go out of his way to rip us all off and spends most of his time trying to get his end away with:

The half-elf warlord who is going prematurely grey trying desperately to keep this band on the brighter side of "functional" and "alive" while fending off unwelcome advances from the aforementioned rogue while also having to reign in the extra-curricular activities of:

A thri-kreen (mantis-folk) ranger who doesn't quite get humanoid culture, struck up an unlikely friendship with the mage, and thinks nothing of devouring defeated enemies regardless of origin, which turned an otherwise straightforward bar-room brawl (started predictably by the rogue) into the bloodiest scene of consummate carnage imaginable. We ain't welcome in Winterholme no more.

Now that I write it all out like that, our team seems rather more dysfunctional than I'd thought.

i played Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay with a mate during my last few years of secondary school using this exact book i borrowed from my uncle:

http://img1.etsystatic.com/017/1/668...17425_jvf6.jpg

god i fucking love that book. everything is so detailed. it even has a beastiary, spell section and combat section. just so fucking cool. i was gamemaster, but it was the first time i'd played it properly and there was only my friend and myself playing all together so the group wasn't exactly very big so i ended up playing as a number of different characters with my friend as well as playing the role of gamemaster. i made a shit-ton of mistakes and made a lot of the rules up as i went along just to try and keep the game fluent. we actually played it on and off for a few years, in the end i killed off my friend's character and ended it that way because i just got fed up with it, but did i enjoy it? you're fucking right i enjoyed it. in fact, i'd happily do it again if i had some friends. :(

ME SAD LONER

Bullet Magnet 04-22-2015 03:53 PM

How can you be lonely? Look at all the character sheets you completed.

STM 04-22-2015 09:24 PM

Man you guys are lucky. All the nerdy kids at my school weren't the fun ones, they were glass licking--incapable of conversation ones. I missed out and it's all yous'es faults.

Maybe the characters are lonely too

Bullet Magnet 04-23-2015 06:45 AM

Erase "lonely" from the "other personality traits" personality section. Or give them some NPC friends.

Some madmen might suggest finding fleshy people to play the characters. As I said. Madmen.

MA 04-23-2015 01:45 PM

you know what, BM? you're right. imma drown myself in character sheets.

Mr. Bungle 04-24-2015 06:12 AM

We should start up an OWF DND campaign on http://roll20.net/

Seriously, that would kick butts so hard that there would be foots in everyone's mouths.

MeechMunchie 04-24-2015 09:25 AM

Yeah, I'd be up for that. I have a vague character idea I've been sitting on for a while. He's basically a warrior-sorcerer who dual-wields spears because why the hell not.

MA 04-24-2015 11:36 AM

i'd be up for that too, even though i have no idea how to work that thing. would we all have to be online at the same time?

Bullet Magnet 04-24-2015 02:08 PM

We would. If we did this we'd have to have a schedule. It wouldn't have to be strict, we'd just see that there was a scheduled game session coming up then we'd agree to an evening we were all available a few days/a week in advance. Semi-regular. Ideally you'd want to skip it if someone can't make it, it does rather mess with the flow and story-telling. But ultimately, you do what works. Getting together the same group of people together is difficult enough when they have jobs, especially when they aren't all ninetofives.

It's not a major commitment, but it is a commitment. It's totally doable though, if you want to. Know this: when you embark down this road, there is no turning back. When you are baptised in the roll of the d20, you will be marked. For evermore shall you be the nerd, the geek, the neckbeard, the dice-jockey. Some of you have already taken your first steps down this road. Most of you have already embraced this state as an inevitability: and for those this process will be as easy as... falling asleep after a tiring day. For the rest, though, there may be resistance, some panicked struggle. Fear not, we can and will submerge you in RP gaming until that last bubble goes "bloop".

You are thus warned.

Manco 04-24-2015 05:21 PM

I’d like to roll with you guys, but there’d be too many webcams and mics for my liking. Unless someone wanted to play a character with a voice inside their head.

Bullet Magnet 04-24-2015 10:05 PM

You could play a character with a full radio play in his head.

STM 04-25-2015 12:39 AM

I wouldn't mind playing and I could probably mic up if that's how you have to do it...but yeah I dunno, I'm kinda shy for webcams. >.>

Bullet Magnet 04-25-2015 06:41 AM

We all know what you look like already. But you don't have to show your face. I don't know how it works, but if audio does have to be accompanied by video you can cover the lens with something. PROTIP: That also works if some perv somewhere hacks your webcam, which is a thing that happens.

STM 04-25-2015 08:38 AM

Grody.

yeah that happened to my old laptop webcam, but being a paranoid fucker i already had something covering the lens.

in other news i'd definitely be up for becoming a nerd again although i don't have a webcam. i have a mic i can use i think. i could get a webcam though, if we did do this shindig. i'm just starved of company right now and ANYTHING WILL DO

I can't tell if this thread should be in NOG.

Manco 04-26-2015 12:51 PM

Only if a game starts.

e: partly relevant to this thread.

MeechMunchie 04-27-2015 09:42 AM

I found this thing.

Also, this is a genuinely useful resource for RPG fluff.

MA 04-28-2015 09:53 AM

that first link gives me a 403 Forbidden screen. cool second link though.

Varrok 04-28-2015 10:00 AM

It gave me 403, but loaded after I tried to refresh the page.
