Adventure Games

MOD EDIT: This thread was split off from What Are you playing right now? VI

I just played a crappy flash point-and-click adventure game based around Gravity Falls, and now I'm itching to play more point-and-click adventure games. Can anyone recommend me a good (and cheap) one that's also available on steam?

Oh and they have to be Mac compatible since that's what I'm stuck with for now.

Thanks!

The only Point and click games I know are telltale games. I dont even know if thats what Point and click is...
Is the Grim fandango remake a point and click?

It has them enable-able through the options.

I'd suggest the Monkey Island special editions. The Sam & Max Telltale games are worth playing too.

I'd certainly not suggest Monkey Island 1 Special edition. Unless you want to button-switch to the original. The remake is butt-ugly. Really horrible to look at. MI2:SE is improved in that aspect.

Grim Fandango Remastered is pretty cool. I could recommend it for somebody who didn't play the original.

+1 for S&Max. Absolutely love the humor in those.

Full Throttle is also cool.

Space Quest (VGA remake) through Space Quest 4 VGA. But save often or use the walkthrough. It's Sierra games, you can die here.

Apparently there are problems with the point and click in the remake, which makes navigation in some areas impossible/awkward. Better to stick with the tank controls for that one.

MI1 and MI2 are fucking classics, and definitely play them with original graphics. Teenagent is a SCUMM game made in some European country that's free on GoG, and I've always loved it despite how irrational some of the puzzle solutions are. On the whole all three of those games will make you really frustrated, but are just brimming with charm.

Pretty much this. But you can extract the original game from the remake files and play it with ScummVM.

Some Poland or something

Bizzare puzzle solutions are a standard in old school p'n'c games.
In Monkey Island 2 you can use a monkey as a wrench.

Teenagent was ok, I guess.

Was monkey island ever ported to the sega cd in Europe does anybody know? Been dying to play that! As for point and clicks, I rather enjoyed broken sword the shadow of the templars , a bit cheesy, but a classic.

As for what I'm playing now, I'm about to test out my latest sega cd game (today's purchase) Sherlock Holmes, though I've heard it's monumentally tedious and incredible boring.

Varrok 03-09-2015 11:56 AM

You can google it. it says "yes"

I'm not an idiot, I was contributing to the thread, varrok? Just because I'm new, does not mean my opinions are not valid, and have nothing to contribute.

Crashpunk 03-09-2015 02:53 PM

No need for that Varrok. And don't let it get to you.

Most of use here are just sarcastic fucks.

Haha, Thankyou, it's fine I'm used to it, I suffer from aspergers syndrome, so understanding sarcasm is a little difficult at times, but it's all good, no harm done :)

I couldnt get past the like 3rd screen of Machinarium...

I know, but some of the ones in Teenaget are especially bad for that style. It's no Gabriel Knight 3, but it gets fairly tedious trial and erroring your way through the second half of the game. At least the solutions in Monkey Island are satisfying or funny, like the monkey-wrench thing.

As far as point and click games go it's quite small, but it's a lot of fun and you can't go past it for free.

Varrok 03-09-2015 08:59 PM

I meant that MI was released for SegaCD with that google thing, in case that's not clear.

Nate 03-09-2015 10:54 PM

Machinarium isn't great, but Botanicula is Joy. Not sure that it counts as a traditional P&C though.

Phylum 03-09-2015 11:21 PM

Controversial, but I felt the same way about Machinarium to the point where I could never actually finish it.

STM 03-09-2015 11:21 PM

I loved Machinarium even though I never completed it (way too hard), I second Gemini Rue...but I never completed that either. :P

Varrok 03-10-2015 06:41 AM

I completed both of these games and they're pretty cool. I'd choose Samorost 2 over Machinarium though.

Nepsotic 03-10-2015 10:30 AM

Tormentum is amazing and also metal as fuck.

MeechMunchie 03-10-2015 04:42 PM

Of the ones I posted, Primordia is my favourite, probably followed by Gemini Rue, then Botanicula.

I liked Machinarium, though. The puzzle with the fan robot was a fantastic piece of design.

A dozing vent-bot to a greenhouse has a mouth full of rotors. When you approach, it growls and the rotor blades judder threateningly. It then asks you simple logic questions. Answer a question right, and it nods sagely and goes back to sleep.

But to actually get into the greenhouse, you have to answer all of its questions wrong, making it judder with rage so hard that its motor burns out and its blades fly loose, allowing you to pass through.

Mr. Bungle 03-10-2015 10:00 PM

Damn, so many options.

I'm definitely most interested in Machinarium, but isn't it more just a puzzle game with a PnT kinda visual set-up? Either way, I love the art style, and if it's well-written on top of that then I'm sold.

Varrok 03-10-2015 10:40 PM

Well, I suppose you could say that about Machinarium.

MeechMunchie 03-11-2015 02:35 PM

It's only as well-written as a game with no dialogue can be, but it's a point-and-click puzzle game, through and through. Combine the things to make a thing, use the thing on the other thing.

STM 03-11-2015 02:55 PM

Yeah the story is pretty cute and the little animated 'dialogue' bubbles are adorable, but you play Machinarium for the art and atmosphere I think, even more than the puzzles.
