SpeedRunsLive

So, a few months ago Velocity 2x came out, and the developers contacted SRL and organised a blind race. As far as I know it was pretty succesful, and I was wondering if it could be considered to promote New n Tasty upon release for PC.
New n Tasty is easily the most speedrunnable game in the series. And while it doesnt look fast, its a very deliberate speed game, every movement is for a reason.

SRL is a site that features live speedruns and showacses a bunch of streamers in one place, like a speedrunning hub. It also features a lot of races, and everyone loves a good speedrace.
Thoughts?

(Didnt think this would promote spoilers so thats why its not in the spoiler forum)

Appropriate for an action platformer. Not appropriate for Oddworld.

Elaborate.

How is NnT not an action platformer?

Phylum 01-04-2015 03:10 AM

Cinematic platformer? Honestly, I haven't played NNT, and I have to admit that it looks a lot less cinematic than AO, but it still seems to fit into that category.

Look at how Velocity 2x is presented. Action. Action, action, action.

Action.

Oddworld games are narrative driven. Anyone remember all of that discussion about if NnT should have menus for difficulty settings? Immersion is a big deal. The way people perceive your game going into it is a big deal. I wouldn't cry if they did go down a route with SRL, but there are probably better ways.

I disagree. Sure it's a more narrative platformer that's slower than Contra but one that still involves very precise movements, pan incredibly low margin on error on Hard, shooting, blowing up and eviscerating other creatures, and even has timed leaderboards. There are people who prefer the full narrative immersion but there are people who also like speedruns and mastering gameplay.

The people who like the former aren't going be the kind of players an Oddworld SRL would appeal to anyway. And the people who like the latter might become interested in a series they haven't payed much attention to in the past.

I mean the key component of Speed Runs is skill. And if Samlaptop's speedrun's are anything to go by then I can imagine the skill involved in speedrunning, and perhaps glitching, NnT will have an appeal.

Oh, I forgot there were leaderboards.

Oddworld may be narratively driven, but a speedrun isnt. U dont watch a single cutscene.

So far, New n Tasty is by far one of the most by the book speedruns. There are no glitches. Theres 1 that can save time but its super tricky and too risky to try when ur already an hour into the run. So its a speedrun where for 1 1/2 hours ur constantly moving, constanly memorising slig patterns, mine patterns, motion detectors and passwords.

It might not be enjoyable to watch. I wouldnt know, I havnt seen anyone run it. I know sam is going to do a run of any%.
Thats why I brought it up, I would absolutely love it. But I dont know if its enjoyable to watch.

Whats more enjoyable to u guys? For the original oddworld. Do u prefer seeing someone run through the whole thing as skilled as possible, or do u like watching sam split it in two with glitches?
Also, a little offtopic. AGDQ starts today. The yearly speedrunning marathon to raise money for cancer research. Last year they raised over a million. 7 days, 24 hours of non stop speedrunning greatness.

I think you missed my point - that advertising with SRL doesn't fit the Oddworld vibe in my books. From an official standpoint I don't think it makes a lot of sense, and I doubt anything anyone says will change that.

I feel like Oddworld pre-launch advertising would be more along the lines of comics, animations and art. World and narrative things. Things that emphasize the strong visual and societal themes that the games have. The kind of things that intrigue people and make them want to know more about the world and be immersed.

Well, either what I just said or this.

To the viewer, New n Tasty is an HD remake for $30 that is 7 hours long on a first playthrough. But im not talking about the regular consumer. Speedrunners can help keep your game alive for decades after its time. I was thinking it could get a head start. Theres like 4 runners who run this game on ps4, and we dont have any official runs, its all segmented.

But I'm biased.
