Abe's Exoddus 100% TAS!

Hey Chumps!

Dooty and I are making a Tool Assisted playthrough of Abe's Exoddus. This time it's gonna be the 100% category. I have already finished TASing Necrum Mines and this video shows Abe rescuing 75 Mudokons as fast as possible in Necrum Mines. This video goes up to the start of Mudomo Vaults.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBG4...B_QOmyGiduw8dw

I have currently left the first door of the Mudomo Vaults, done the secret (the easiest one) and I'm about to TAS the second door!

Not a huge fan of TAS. probably cuz I dont understand them. Though I also dont like segmented speedruns, and theyre basically the same thing.

Not even slightly.

Job McYossie 10-02-2014 01:35 PM

Feel like explaining the differences?

MeechMunchie 10-02-2014 04:26 PM

Segmentation is just a seperate issue. You can have segmented speedruns that aren't tool-assisted, one-shot speedruns that are, and vice versa.

Xavier 10-02-2014 05:16 PM

I tried to watch it from my hotel but the connection is awful so I'll have to watch it later.

Still, keep up the good job :)

Shade667 10-02-2014 07:17 PM

Segmented speedruns are speedrunning the levels individually, usually to get the best overall time, right? Theyre good to set goals for Single segment runs, and learning the run. TAS, to my understanding has the similar goal, to get the best overall time with the help of tools. At least from the limited experience ive seen of them is what theyve looked like. if there is a bigger difference then feel free to correct me.

Nepsotic 10-03-2014 02:55 PM

Kind of like cheating, then.

MeechMunchie 10-03-2014 04:19 PM

Cheating is fraudulent. You're only cheating if you lie about what you're doing.

Shade667 10-03-2014 08:46 PM

Its not cheating. Its a cetegory of speedrunning. Just a category I have no care to watch.

MeechMunchie 10-04-2014 03:00 AM

That's fair enough. I just don't see how completing a game with the assistance of tools is in any way equivalent to completing seperate levels without them.

Shade667 10-04-2014 04:56 AM

Some people consider speedrunning itself to be cheating, because of the glitches involved.

Pirfsich 10-04-2014 06:28 AM

I consider speedruns with using glitches as cheating.

Crashpunk 10-04-2014 08:03 AM

I don't. A lot of speedruns do exploit... Well, exploits in the game. Sure they're glitches. But they're in the game. Some of which are really difficult to take advantage of. So I wouldn't call it cheating.

Using cheat codes and tools to speedrun on the other hand... I consider that cheating.

And if you think exploits are cheating. I'm sure they're speedruns which are completely exploit free.

Shade667 10-04-2014 09:21 AM

So far, NnT is pretty exploit free. Besides the walk on air glitch, but its pretty hard to do, only got it once. Lets u do the first screen of scrabania in 20 seconds.

Xavier 10-04-2014 01:00 PM

Do you have a video of that?

Job McYossie 10-04-2014 01:44 PM

I haven't done N'n'T yet (stupid not having a PS4) but if it's the screen I'm thinking of then you really don't need any exploit, just "roll" with it.

Couldn't agree more. TA speedruns are kind of bullshit. We got no room for that in these parts.

Job McYossie 10-04-2014 02:31 PM

This is the internet. All we have is room.

Nepsotic 10-04-2014 02:39 PM

You must be fun at parties again.

MeechMunchie 10-04-2014 03:27 PM

i don't like this thing therefore it is illegitimate

Nepsotic 10-04-2014 04:03 PM

MeechMunchie gets it.

Xavier 10-04-2014 05:50 PM

I think TAS can be cool to watch. I mean, once it has been clearly mentionned that it's a TAS and not a "legit" or wathever speedrun, I don't see why we can't enjoy it for what it is.

Do you have a video of that?

I dont. No PC and No capture card (right now anyway, planning to change that)
I saw a video on how to do it over on the SDA Forums (SpeedDemosArchives).
There was a short lived thread discussing the game for speedrunning. I definately picked up a few things from it.

I guess the analogy for me would be saying that the Tour De France is less legitimate than the London Marathon, because competitors in the former use bicycles and can therefore move faster.

The Tour De France is a completely different marathon though. So legitimacy is irrelevant when comparing to two.

So a TAS is more like using a Bicycle to do the London marathon. :tard:

Shade667 10-05-2014 04:58 AM

On an unrelated note, I just entered the top 25 on the leaderboards for NnT. Segmented of course, cuz im still optimising levels.

and therein lies the point

I'm so fucking dumb.

And also because of the doping.

It might help to not view a TAS as a demonstration of skill*, but as means of entertainment. Some TAS's are very interesting: since reaction time isn't an issue, they can show off some crazy things that a human just couldn't do. However, O:AO and O:AE don't lend themselves to TASing in the same way, since they often look like regular speedruns, just without mistakes.

*Not that it's easy to make a good TAS. The idea is to aim for perfection, not a speedrun where you can redo your mistakes.
