Reboot
I think they should use New 'n' Tasty to reboot the quintology, completely redo Munch's oddysee and make it the great game it could have been.
I concur.
Yep, I agree. If they manage to make MO as pretty and as fun as NnT then it would be an instabuy.
And yes, I realise it's much more complex to tackle a 3D game than a 2D game. :) |
Definetely. I would love to see MO remade completely, with the old one as "Munch Classic"
But first Exoddus HD.
To be honest I'd rather see them incorporate their ideas into a Munch's Exoddus or Squeek's Oddysee if they are ever put into development.
Although, I wonder, will the quintology return to 2.5D platforming? i know lorne said that Munch was originally supposed to be a platformer but market rends changed it to 3D. |
Even if they kept it 3D i think they could do a good job, if they it made more about stealth and puzzles as apposed to the power ups and combat I think it would be fantastic. My biggest problem with Munch's Oddysee was the generic environments compared with Abe's Oddysee and Exoddus but with modern technology they could make some very interesting locations in 3D.
I want Abe's Exoddus HD before anything else. That game needs a remake.
Thought this was another crash bug notification at first.
From a marketing standpoint it would make most sense to redo Exoddus, then redo MO as well. Otherwise you'd be gathering a whole new audience that would then see a gap in the story if you leave MO out.
And the original ideas for MO... those need to come to fruition. Including the story elements. |
I think the only way you're going to get fans excited about seeing Munch return is if you completely rework the game into the 2d style of the first games. I could be wrong, but I bet people would be really interested to see how that would come out.
I don't wish for a MO remake to be honest, Munch happened. I'd much rather see us move on to new parts of the quintology. Or at least new games, and from what few interviews I've seen, the next new game might be Brutal Ballad, which while wouldn't be my first hope for a new game, it's better than getting more remakes to me.

I would be interested to see if they could do something to really make it stand out in 2d. I found playing as Munch to be tedious in 3d.

I'd actually appreciate 2D more. Just sayin'
I keep thinking how they could make Munch interesting in 2D, however. i mean underwater sections in platformers are all pretty similarly mediocre I think. i would imagine his jekyll/hyde mechanic would be the main draw to his character. Maybe being able to destroy parts of the environment?
I don't think it's a good idea to go from 3D to 2D. There are still people who love the gameplay of MO.
Any genre can work when done well, obviously. Munch was rushed, and therefore isn't a good example of a 3D platformer, but there are very good ones out there (Ratchet & Clank, Spyro...). JAW seem to know what they're doing now and perhaps they could find a way to make Munch work if they rebuilt it and kept the genre the same.
I think I'd rather see new Oddworld titles first (perhaps even before Exoddus now). You've got the whole remake thing going on - Game market is currently flooded with "HD remasters", so people are confused and can't tell the difference between a HD upgrade of an existing title and a complete from-the-ground-up re-imagining. And there was that controversy earlier with Lorne complaining about this. Many comments on N'n'T's reviews reflect this, saying "I'm not paying $30 for a 15 year old game!" even though that's not the case. It was nice to see people correcting them, though. |

I don't think they'd be keen to remake a game they already torturously high-definition'd... unless it was a serious departure from the original. Considering how central things like Roid were to the original design, though, it could be worth looking into.
I say go for Munch's Exoddus instead.
I'm thinking it would have to be almost a completely different game with aspects of the original story in place.
Yeah. The problem I think they had with Munch was that they tried to turn their 2D formula into 3D instead of figuring out what the strengths of a great 3D game are - if a 2D game would have indeed been a bad business decision at the time (who knows?)
Personally I don't want it remade, but if it was then I would like to see it as a 3D game anyway. The beauty about the first two Abe games was because they were 2D but I honestly don;t want all Oddworld games to be like that. I would get sick of it eventualy.
This is my opinion on what I would liek them to do. Do abe's Exodus Take a small de tour to make a game called Hand of Odd;) (Really like the idea of this game) Then go onto do a New IP or more Oddworld but something diff from 2D:) |
I wonder how Hand of Odd would work. Would they take a stab at the Free to Play model with micro-transactions? It worked well for Valve but Oddworld aren't nearly the juggernaut they are. Maybe it would be priced for a whilse then become Free-to-play down the line like TF2?
You should see the reviews for MtG 2015. The micro-transactions are perhaps the biggest reason as to why that game got universally bad reviews. I think we're seeing the end of an era here folks.
By micro-transactions I'm talking things like the silly superfluous hats in TF2. Not things that affect the gameplay or exclude other players from important content.
I feel like MO would do great if it was a GOOD 3D platformer. I'm imagining an Oddworld version of Psychonauts, or Jak.
I think Abe's Exoddus remade basing on NNT's experience would make me cum all over my face again... I'm sorry
