Who here started with Munch?
Hello all oddlongs, bretherans or sistertherans. It's your ole pal Soulstorm here with another thread just for kicks.
I don't know if this has been a thread in the past but I guess I'll find out after posting. I was watching a video of someone who was talking about new and tasty thoroughly, and he mentioned that his first oddworld game was Munch's oddysee... Now this kinda blew my mind "for obvious reasons" but it got me thinking, how many people started off with the wheel chaired, fuzzle leading, sonar headed gabbit? |
I started with AO around the time they were working on MO. So not me ;)
|
I started with AO probably just before Stranger was released. :B
AE was on my Christmas list every year after but I think it was about two or three years before my parents managed to get me a copy (we didn't have a computer with internet until 2007-2008). |
Someone on Dtoid said she tried out Munch's Oddysee HD, and it turned her off the series.
|
I think he in the minority there. Most people started off with AO.
Personally. I started with AE then played AO about a few months after that. |
AO back in '97 :) First game I ever played on Playstation, starting with Demo 1. Can't believe it's 17 years ago!
I remember my parents had bought it for my birthday, and played it on the night before to make sure it was 'suitable' for me, and not too frightening or gory! |
I bought the Xbox solely for MO when it became available for preorder. Think I only had 6 other games for the xbox after that.
Had AO in 97 then AE in 98. |
Abe's Oddysee on Demo Disc 1 along with Hercules and Rocks n Gems were the very first games i ever played in my life. My dad used to sneak me downstairs from my room when i was 4 or 5 when my mum was asleep and he used to play Abe with me :') It was his fault i had nightmares! :P
Edit: I too bought an Xbox only for Munch and Stranger. I only had 1 other game and it was that god awful cartoony haunted house ghoulies thing haha! |
I started with AE mainly because AO was too hard. I would hate to have started with MO.
|
Those who started Oddworld with MO probably don't understand the reservations of the rest of us who started with AO, and why we feel Oddworld ought to be "darker" than it actually is, rather than half-comical.
As for me, I remember one of my cousins' friends showing me AO on a PSX demo disk back in '98. Then in 1999, a different friend of mine had an original release of the PC version sitting on his computer desk and let me borrow it 'cause I recognized the boxart. Our parents fell out and I lost contact with him unfortunately - In effect I stole AO from him and had no way of returning it. :S But I did buy one of the "budget" re-release versions of Exoddus the following year. |
I wonder what it would be like to start off with SW. It's completely different to the other Oddworld games.
|
There are quite a few people who only knew of SW and then learned about the other games, but ignored them because they were different.
|
Started with AO because my mom found it shortly after it came out when she was shopping for new PSX games. The description on the back caught her eye. When I saw her playing it, I was intrigued and played it as soon as she was done. Later AE came out and we got that immediately.
I only got to play MO at my uncle's place because my parents were such sonyfags they refused to get an Xbox. I remember being severely disappointed and I always cringed when the commercials showed up on TV. Got to play SW as a demo first, and absolutely loved it. AND NOW HERE I AM I had too many friends start with MO though and they all have horrible opinions of Oddworld and refuse to play the other games because they think they'll be just as bad/underwhelming, and always without fail start naming off other platformers that came out around the time that were significantly better executed |
I started with MO. I remember around that time I was really interested in the style of Xbox games that were coming out like Blinx and Whacked! I think the first time I saw MO was at a game rental store, and the box art immediately stood out to me. I used to rent it all the time and go to my friend's to play it because I didn't have my own Xbox. The opening cinematic was what really drew me in because I'd never seen anything like it before.
|
Ha, I remember blinx pretty well too. Just look in my signature.
The story and cinematic in MO was fantastic, regardless of the gameplay. |
Started out with AO with Demo disc 1 on the psx. I did however not finish it first (without using the level select cheat). First one that I finished was AE. I then went back to AO directly after.
Guess at the time AO was just a bit to difficult for 8 year old me at the time. When they originally announced Munch I got super excited and it was the game I was looking forward to and the reason why I got a PS2 originally. Sadly it moved to xbox and my parents had a 1 console only policy. I remember my naive young self hating Bill Gates back in the day as I thought that he was the man responsible for "Stealing" Oddworld away from the Playstation :p. I often though about secretly buying a second hand Xbox just so I could play MO and SW. |
Started with AO on PC, played it everyday, although I was really afraid of Abe in main menu, I thought he is going to crawl through that window and jump out of the screen. Damn I was scared. We also had PSX so I tried it on PSX too, but I found the gamespeak to be too complicated for me instead of 1-9 (and 0) on keyboard. Then Abe's Exoddus came, ohh boy I was pumped. I enjoyed it more than Abe's Oddysee, probably because the frustration was lowered with QUIKSAVE, and it's just.. it has more things to offer.
Oh but then.. I randomly saw Munch's Oddysee picture on the internet and I couldn't believe it. I started searching for more, and I couldn't believe there is continuation to previous 2 games. I wanted to buy XBOX juuuust for the MO. I am glad I eventually didn't buy it. I was really pumped to play it someday, but when it came to Steam with Oddbox, I suddenly realised that this is not a game I thought it is. And it kept crashing. I will always have problem with accepting something else than 2D platform game as Oddworld game, sadly. I'm just stuck in my childhood, I even don't like SW that much, although I enjoyed it, it's just not the 2D platform game I spent months with. Alright that's about it, damn this is long. |
I started with AO demo on that PS demo disc thing. Played at my sister's house at the time and loved it from the start. When I saw the full game in a rental store later on I even rented a Playstation to play it. Never got past the stockyards, lol.
I actually completed AE before completing AO. |
:
I guess that's why i was surprised none of the other games were like that. I'm still dissappointed there's not another game for the Stranger. |
Agreed, I would love to get back to that part of Mudos and see what the Stranger becomes after he frees the river.
|
It'd also be cool to see the implications of Sekto's dam on the gabbits/ fauna of SE Mudos that are perhaps unaware of its existence. I suppose it would have made Ma'Spa dry up! Then once it's destroyed and the water returns I can imagine it'd have a noticeable impact on downstream communities.
|
I think the vykkers would be really interested in experimenting on what may or may not be the last steef on Oddworld.
Back on topic though, Munch's Odyssee was actually my second game. I thought it was going to be a two player game, so i got it for me and my father. It was a fun game, and i enjoyed the levels i had finished so far, but the whole 'being stealthy' strategy wasn't my thing. |
I can proudly say, I started with AO in like, 1999 (although I played the PC Demo as early as 1998) and over a year later I found out there was a Sequel called Exoddus so I got that for my birthday as well. And Munch actually (and Halo) played a huge part in the question what made me buy the first Xbox, but I immediately felt that the game was lacking something...
The 2D gameplay just didn't translate so well into a 3D world, and it had extremely touchy controls. Don't get me wrong, it's still a GOOD game, since it's the Oddworld universe, the great CGI sequences and the characters that compensate the flaws in gameplay. It's funny because recently I ran across some guy on Youtube who commented on a New'nTasty video, he liked Munch the most... I explained to him it was probably through nostalgic reasons, and that the strengths of the franchise are in the first 2 games. As far as Stranger ist concerned, I didn't get that game until I recently got the HD version from GoG, so I'm looking forward to playing that game, I heard it's better than Munch. :) |

I did
|
Well I'm in the same boat as most people here as far as their first Oddworld game is concerned but I wasn't introduced to the series until fairly late (2007-08 I think).
|
I started with AO and never played AE. I forgot all about oddworld until I had a demo disc for Xbox and Munch was on it. I loved it and Stranger's wrath both.
