JAW Interview: "I don’t want to release PC and Mac the same day as console"

In this interview Stewart Gilray states that he really doesn't want to release a PC/Mac/Linux version of New 'n' Tasty. Guess that would explain why Playstation has been getting so much love from JAW and OWI lately and the PC platform have been hung out to dry (Munch HD? Where is it?).

While the article (or Gilray) doesn't flat out say the PC version will be intentionally delayed, it's pretty much implied.

:

[Gilray] expects to ship the title to third-party testing in the next week or two, with submission to Sony for PS3, PS4, and Vita release immediately thereafter. A release for PC, Mac, and Linux will follow approximately a month later, with a Wii U version planned for later down the line.
Of course piracy is mentioned as the major reason for delaying PC platform versions, which is major bullshit if you ask me. Sure it would affect some sales, but not nearly as much as games with a physical release.

Thief, for instance, is set to release in three days (on all platforms at once) but the console versions for both PS3 and Xbox 360 have been leaked almost a week in advance. PC version? Nowhere to be found through illegal channels.
Reason for it leaking this early? Physical copies have to be distributed around the world. Easy to steal a copy and throw the contents online.

A month long delay for the PC version of New 'n' Tasty would be complete BS and I thoroughly hope this won't be the case. Steam has established itself as a platform solid enough to combat piracy for the last few years. Please reconsider this idiotic stance on release dates and just release everything at the same time. Thanks!

No, it’s outright stated.
:

In light of Unity streamlining the development process, we ask Gilray about the benefits of platform parity (releasing on as many systems as possible at the same time). “I have a huge concern with the PC format and piracy,” he says. “There are some people I know who, if a game comes out on console and PC the same day, they’ll pirate the PC version and not bother buying any version. But if there’s a delay of the PC version, they’ll buy the PlayStation version for example, and then pirate the PC version afterwards. For small business, I don’t want to release PC and Mac the same day as console, because I’m pretty certain my sales on console will be affected.
Not particularly happy to hear Gilray has such a low opinion of the PC platform. Does he have any kind of stats (from recent games) that back him up?

Man that's shitty, the only Playstation I have is a Playstation 1, I was kind of bargaining on a Steam release so I could get it ASAP.

No, it’s outright stated.

I know, but I wasn't sure if that applied to the release of New 'n' Tasty or if it was just his personal opinion. Pretty certain it does apply, though, which is a darn shame.

What's interesting is that I recall Lorne having a different opinion on the entire thing.

Nate 02-21-2014 07:29 PM

This isn't news. JAWs have been talking about this for both the SW and MO HD updates.

Oh? What did he say?

V_O_T 02-21-2014 10:40 PM

Aw man. I was really going to buy 14 steam copies to gift out but my brother got a PS4 so i guess i can still get it at release.

I get that this might be a test for them, release the game a month late to test sales and it being strictly for market research. If it is for that reason then I understand. Because I too know a lot of people who say they will buy it if its good after pirating it, then not buying but loving the game.

I mean, they might need the revenue just this once to break into the stream of things.

if im making sense here. if not forget this post lol.

I really hope they don't just cancel the PC port. I've always played AO on PC. If they still do release on PC, I hope the port will be proper, and not like the original port for SW, which was terrible.

I really hope they don't just cancel the PC port.

Why would they do that? OWI always said they wanted to be available on as many platforms as possible. That would be ridiculous.

I see where Stew is coming from and honestly I don't think one month is such a big deal (says the guy who owns a PS3, I know).

Manco 02-22-2014 02:48 AM

One month is a fairly long wait. Usually other publishers will delay their PC port by maybe two weeks if not less.

It’s disappointing to hear because it’s yet another example of PC gamers being forced to wait because a developer doesn’t trust them not to pirate everything that isn’t nailed down. This despite the fact that Steam has proved itself to be a very successful platform to publish on.

It’s even stranger to hear something like this from a developer who purports to be platform-agnostic.

:

()
Oh? What did he say?

I think Havoc may be misremembering. Lorne has definitely claimed to be platform-agnostic, but I don’t think he’s ever specifically talked about simultaneous releases on PC.

Yeah I might have him mixed up with someone else. I know Lorne is all pro-digital distribution and such. I seemed to remember him not liking to favor one platform over another, even though the franchise has its roots on the Playstation.

Unfortunately the favoring of one platform is exactly what is happening here with multiple games so far.

gishygleb 02-22-2014 08:01 AM

Basicly, there are less people, who own PS, so there are less pirates. But the PS games are as primitive to hack as the PC ones. Plus, there are less potential clients.

It is a turn of pitch-and-toss. There is no sense of delaying, that is a naive cliché.

Varrok 02-22-2014 08:05 AM

PS4 isn't easy to hack. Because it's new.

Slog Bait 02-22-2014 08:21 AM

Everything's easy to hack. It's all a matter of time and patience.

Varrok 02-22-2014 08:26 AM

Let me rephrase myself: PS4 isn't hacked now. It probably still won't be hacked by the time of NnT's release (provided it'll be out this spring)

gishygleb 02-22-2014 08:30 AM

They said, it would be released for PS3.

Edit: I was mistaken.

Huh? :fuzconf:

Available soon on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PS Vita, Wii U, PC, Mac and Linux

gishygleb 02-22-2014 09:39 AM

Huh? I was twice mistaken.

Varrok 02-22-2014 10:54 AM

It's almost like being right

JennyGenesis 02-22-2014 03:04 PM

Sorry to be a dick, but I felt that it was appropriate to post this right now.

New ’n’ Tasty, which includes a number of new surprises and secrets, along with three big, secret features that Gilray tells us won’t be revealed until launch.
Why?... Why tease me JAW!? I'm getting impatient to play this now, so excited!

Crashpunk 02-23-2014 03:48 AM

I had a feeling this would happen. I think OWI and JAW know the value of Steam but maybe the experience with the MO and the SW port have a bad taste in their mouth. It could be as simple as Stew's love of Sony and the Playstation and to give the PS4 that bit more appeal over the XBone? Who knows. Personally. It's only a month and I can wait. I've wanted a reason to get a PS4 anyway.

It could be worse. You could be a Wii U user. :tard:

Paul 02-23-2014 04:22 AM

I don't own a PS4 so I guess I'll be waiting on the PC version.

Scrabaniac 02-23-2014 05:07 AM

This game is purely the reason I am buying a PS4 with my annual bonus. I may take interest in others after I have completed New 'n' Tasty multiple times.

gishygleb 02-23-2014 05:38 AM

Oh, I suddenly felt, that all my enthusiasm about NnT is absent. I shall never buy this game, as just a simple remake is not enough to refill a person with spirit.

The graphics and everything else is trully admirable, but constant repetition is arrgh. All that marketing fuss around the game is way too exhausting.

Maybe, here I betray the Oddworld, however, however...

Job McYossie 02-23-2014 10:56 AM

It's not really a game to fall under "simple remake." SW HD was a simple remake. The many versions of SimCity 2000 were simple remakes. This falls under remasterpiece.

Connell 02-23-2014 12:47 PM

I'm curious; Will there be a difference in terms of graphical quality or gameplay (or anything at all) between the PS3 and PS4 versions?

JennyGenesis 02-23-2014 01:04 PM

Graphically yes, but as for everything else, I'd say no.

Actually, it's a HD remaster, which is very different from a remake. But yeah.

I'm not sure if it'll be a substantial difference but I'm guessing it'll run at 60 fps for the PS4 and 30 for the PS3. Hmm.
