Monarchy debate 'I should have just deleted these posts' edition

MOD EDIT: This thread was split off from the 'UK government to 'Ban' porn' thread after this post.

I think the Monarchy is the only thing I'd keep about the way the country is governed...although if I were to do things my way they'd have absolutely no say in anything to do with government what so ever, they'd not really even be figure heads. Always handy to have a royal family to do trade with the Saudis though. Oil prices would be much higher if we didn't have Queenie to placate the Middle East.

Having a royal family sends the wrong messages to the country's population especially since class division is inherent in there being a monarchy. I think the cons outweigh the pros, and I think even without the royal family, there'd be ways to negotiate about things that concern resources. Maybe they have their uses, but they aren't the only option.

MA 07-23-2013 09:29 AM

i agree with you about the royal family, but at the same time i do think prince Phillip is fucking hilarious.

Nepsotic 07-23-2013 09:35 AM

I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE DAMN BABY! I care about porn. Fuck whoever the prime minister is.

As many dysfunctions as America has, at least we don't have a monarchy. And yes, we do laugh at you because of it. Even the really backwards, obese, Walmart shoppers. And what should horrify you is that they're right. They're right to laugh, and they do.

Nepsotic 07-23-2013 10:23 AM

And then their mobility scooter tips over forward because of all the Asda/Wal Mart's own brand chocalate cake in the front basket. Then we go back to laughing at them.

Wings of Fire 07-23-2013 10:26 AM

Anyone who is worth anything laughs at the idea of a royal family. If you agree with the idea of being a subject of some pampered rabbit teethed old lady who has never worked an honest day's work in her life then I'll laugh at you too. Because you deserve it.

MA 07-23-2013 10:32 AM

you know i'm glad they're laughing at us. good on them. i'm laughing too, in despair. it's a farce. why are they even interested in porn? aren't there more pressing matters to attend to, instead of terrorizing the general public with virtual abstinance? i really don't get it.

are the Spanish Inquisition coming back?

STM 07-23-2013 10:33 AM

I just think having a Monarchy makes our election system easier, plus they don't really do anything particularly bad. Plus they're good for tourism! Who wants to see an empty castle when you can have one with living fossils in it?

I'd like to point out I'm not really a Monarchist, I just like history.

But that's the point. As gross and awful as they are, they are still completely in the right, and justified when they make fun of you, and your completely asinine government's decision to hold on to a toy monarchy.

e: laaate

That doesn't wash with me, young man. Go sit in the corner and think about what you've done and don't do it again.

I wish I could laugh, but it's too close to home. And I honestly don't understand how people don't get bitter about having to see the face of a person thousands of times richer than them mocking them on the back of every note of their measley earnings.

How?
:

plus they don't really do anything particularly bad.
Even if that was true, which it isn't, why is that a good reason to keep them?
:

Plus they're good for tourism! Who wants to see an empty castle when you can have one with living fossils in it?
Wow, it's like Scotland doesn't have a tourism industry at all.
:

I'd like to point out I'm not really a Monarchist, I just like history.
That makes you a sentimentalist. You want us to symbolically bow our knees because a tradition should be upheld.

OddjobAbe 07-23-2013 10:45 AM

And with regards to the tourism argument, I offer an alternative: preserve their bodies and make Buckingham Palace a museum/mausoleum. I think that would generate more revenue. I wonder how many people visited Moscow just to see Lenin's corpse?

STM 07-23-2013 10:52 AM

:

And I hate myself for it. I'm a libertarian/anarchist depending on the weather. But for some reason I can't bring myself to hate the monarchy or get rid of them. As I said, probably because I like the history attached to the concept of royalty. However bloodthirsty and barbaric it is it's still interesting. If I was given the chance to remove them though, if by some insane circumstance, I'd still consider it, after weighing up the pros and cons.

:

Wow, it's like Scotland doesn't have a tourism industry at all.
Compare the value of the English tourist industry to the Scottish tourist industry though.

:

Even if that was true, which it isn't, why is that a good reason to keep them?
Why isn't it true? Well if you had a coffee table in the corner of your living room and it was functional - held some plant pots on it, a nice candle or two - nice to look at, but you didn't really need it, would you get rid of it?

:

How?
Sorry, actually I just confused myself. You can disregard that point because I don't actually remember what it was I was thinking of when I said it...wrote it.

:

That doesn't wash with me, young man. Go sit in the corner and think about what you've done and don't do it again.
I don't like the naughty corner. =<

in STM's defence, the queen is the most recognized face on the planet, and Japs do come over just to take pictures of it. that's fame beyond imagining. her only respite must be some cannibalistic tribe untouched by civilisation. that'd be some holiday.

STM 07-23-2013 11:12 AM

Until we conquer it for her. Because empire!

MA 07-23-2013 11:17 AM

because prince Phillip!

Good thinking. All in favour of Her Majesty's immediate holiday to Cauldron Island, raise your fork.

Manco 07-23-2013 11:54 AM

Mmm, beef jerky.

Or uh, “beef” jerky I suppose.

Nepsotic 07-23-2013 11:54 AM

Actually it's pointless. All tribes do know her, haven't you heard of that tribe who worship prince Phillip? That isn't a joke, by the way.

Jordan 07-23-2013 12:18 PM

I am so glad to see people who agree that the monarchy is absolutely useless. I'm so tired of being saying "Oh, but they're good for tourism." No. I'm just tired of it. It makes me sick seeing people spoon fed and given an easy life just because they are born into a certain family. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they're bad people because they do some great things. But that's down to them as individuals, not because they are royalty.

You do realize that, as far as government is concerned, the two are about identical? It's not like the president of the US has any real power. Everything he wants to do ultimately has to be approved by the senate.

And I would rather have a monarchy than a country where I only have two realistic voting options:

1. Screw the people this way.
2. Screw the people that way.

At least with a monarchy you get to chose from all kinds of different flavors and ways to be screwed over by the government.

Once again, Havoc missed the point.

Havoc 07-23-2013 12:28 PM

Oh I'm sorry I didn't see you making one. Unless it was about fat Americans laughing.

Manco 07-23-2013 12:30 PM

guys can we not have another stupid argument started by havoc being dumb/trolling

OANST 07-23-2013 12:31 PM

That's about it. At Monarchies. Because how fucking backwards do you have to be to still have Dukes hanging around?

STM 07-23-2013 12:36 PM

Moving away from England, you know the President does actually have as much power as Liz, really? America is run by corporations, that's pretty obvious to everyone outside of America it seems.

And that's not me saying hurr hurr Britain is better than America because it's not. They're both equally poor, just in different ways. I can't stand patriotism, so don't think that's my agenda.

OANST 07-23-2013 12:38 PM

It was Havoc's however. He's hoping that because no one gives a shit about Denmark that we won't remember they also still have a monarchy. Edit: My bad. Netherlands. That's even worse.

Lorne Lanning wants his faggotry back.

I thought he was from Windmillland?
