New TAS Videos

I have more speedruns to post! Not done by me of course, but by "Dooty"

So this first video is another 100% run of AO. This run is shorter than the previous one thanks to some new tricks.

This run goes for killing the most mudokons possible, my only question being why doesn't he just get out of Rupturefarms as quick as possible seeing as all the mudokons are killed when the reach the stockyards? He also manages to completely bypass Paramonia, if you want some real mind fuckery, check out 24:28

It's not about the statistic at the end of the game, it's about the blood being on your hands!

This is the new any% TAS run in 27:01 by Dooty!

Thanks! I've been looking for a new any% run from him for a while now considering that he did his other run again.

Samtastic 06-16-2013 04:48 AM

I'll update my any%. I have mastered the diagonal fall glitch which is something that i didn't use in my real time PC run and I'll try my hardest to use the invisible Abe glitch in Scrabiana which skips several puzzles. I can do the stop and turn glitch but since I'm doing my runs segmented I can re-do the last part. i will be doing it on the PSX version this time as now I got a decent capture device for my PS3.

Whilst TAS videos are more entertaining to watch, I prefer real time runs because they require more skill.

In Dooty's new Any% run, why does he bother completing Zulag 2 in Rupturefarms? He jumps to the screen with the ballcar to take him to Zulag 3!

I think you're severely underestimating how much skill, patience and knowledge it requires to complete a TAS that would be accepted to TASvideos.

JennyGenesis 06-17-2013 01:03 PM

I'm not disputing that, but if you mess up in a TAS it's no biggie. But with a real time run, especially with a single segment, if you mess up, you have to redo the entire run.

jumper 06-19-2013 10:26 AM

A TAS isn't just a skilled person playing through the game like any other person would, but using save states to eliminate errors. It's a highly involved, incredibly time consuming and very difficult process where (amongst other things) a game is played (normally) frame-by-frame to ensure perfect movement, and memory addresses are watched to help manipulate luck. Seriously, proper TAS's are meant to be perfect to the best of the authors' and community's knowledge.

Getting back on topic: these runs are awesome. I'm glad someone finally worked out how to skip at least on of Scrabania and Paramonia. The next hurdle is skipping both!

Nepsotic 06-19-2013 01:35 PM

Doesn't using tools defeat the point of a speedrun? Also, if you skip entire areas like Paramonia, it isn't a run.
Yes, the point of a speedrun is to complete the game as fast as possible, but if you're cheating, using tools and skipping major areas, you're not completing it.

JennyGenesis 06-19-2013 01:53 PM

Well there are different categories of runs, and skipping levels is not cheating, no cheats are usually, you are simply exploiting glitches within the game.

Nepsotic 06-19-2013 02:08 PM

You aren't playing the game in the way it was originally intended to be played, that's cheating, whether you're using "cheats" or not.

They’re playing the game frame-by-frame and editing runs together to remove mistakes. They aren’t playing the way intended at all, so why get hung up on this one little thing?

Nepsotic 06-19-2013 02:30 PM

I'm not getting hung up on that one little thing, I'm saying as a whole, it completely defeats the point of a speedrun. I mean, at first I thought it ws impressive, but thinking about it, it's pretty much just trial and error. And, despite what Jumper says, there is no talent involved in editing out your mistakes, only very basic editing skills. Jesus, I could do it.
I'm not just talking about this one either. If this is how all TASs work then I'm talking about all of them.

Connell 06-19-2013 03:06 PM

Aren't TAS's more a way of showing off how a game could be played perfectly, rather than an actual speedrun? Because surely they would not be half as popular if they were meant to contend against regular runs - as Nepsotic points out, the object is completely defeated.

JennyGenesis 06-19-2013 03:34 PM

TAS's basically show how quickly the game can be beaten "in theory". But the reality of you hitting every button at the perfect frame everytime, obviously the chances are rather slim.

I completely disagree with you on this Nepsotic. In an Any% run, when do you consider the game complete? When you reach the end of The Boardroom, skipping levels makes it all the more fun to watch, but still I wouldn't consider it cheating, it's not like the player sat there inputting cheat codes, as I said, it's just exploiting glitches in the game. A TAS, as I said is what can be achieved "in theory" and provides general entertainment, if you want to watch more serious speedrunning that involves somebody sitting down and playing the game straight up, go check out Speed Demos Archive.

What about the current best speedrun on AE for the PC? That was done without tools, and it completely skips Slig Barracks and Bonewerkz!
