Chanting in AO/AE

Hello!
Please explain me how the chanting work.
Is this a pathfinding agorithm to the nearest thing or what?

Varrok 03-20-2013 06:51 AM

If you mean that you possess the closest enemy on the screen, then you're probably right

MeechMunchie 03-20-2013 07:01 AM

Nemin, Oddworld games aren't nearly as neatly programmed as you think they are. They're held together with the coding equivalent of masking tape.

I assume it finds the closest or only AI on the screen then gives the commands for the player to control it...or something.

Or maybe Abe chants the Command Melody from Zelda Wind Waker.

Maybe it's science?

Maybe it's Magic?

I don't know.

maybe it’s maybelline

Nepsotic 03-20-2013 10:28 AM

Maybe she's born with it

I know that certain AIs are prioritised over others for possession; Glukkons being the best example (they're possessed over anything else). Otherwise, I think it's based around which AI is closest to Abe.

I think the effects of chanting were completely mastered in AO/AE and completely ruined in MO. i didnt like the continuing chanting whilst the enemy was possessed, also the sound effects in AO/AE were much better, hopefully they maintain this in New n Tasty!

Nepsotic 03-21-2013 09:40 AM

I don't think anybody likes the sound design in MO.

Oddey 03-21-2013 11:50 AM

I'm pretty sure there's some kind of actual list of which AIs are possessed first, because it always goes in the same order, and it's not the closest AI for sure.

Phylum 03-21-2013 03:48 PM

They almost definitely had a way to force possession to a specific enemy. Other than that it prioritised glukkons, then searched from closest.

Scrabaniac 03-22-2013 03:00 AM

If it searched for the closest, how did it select between two sligs in the background?

Phylum 03-22-2013 03:07 AM

Background or foreground, they both exist on the same basic 2D grid. I'm pretty sure it ignores everything but relative location.

This summarizes it quite good I think.
