Fighting Games

Well, since there's not really a topic for this type of game and it's not very much discussed on this forum, as far as I know, I decided to make one. At least Mr. Bungle will use it, I guess, since he's a SF fan.

Here's some of the latest news about the FGC:

Skullgirls 1.01 Slightly Different Edition patch for XBLA on hold due to Microsoft's update file size limit

Is there a reason why you included 'OWF' in the title of this thread or should I change it to just 'Fighting Games' for the sake of clarity?

Round 1: Steamer_KING vs. Nate

OANST 01-09-2013 08:41 AM

FINISH HIM

Steamer_KING 01-09-2013 09:34 AM

Well, since this is Oddworld Forums and people who play fighting games are "virtual fighters", I thought it was good name, but you want, I can change it.

On Topic:
Mr. Wizard joined Keits and Skisonic on tonight's Wakeup SRK to announce Evolution 2013's game lineup.

1. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
2. Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition v2012
3. Tekken Tag Tournament 2
4. Mortal Kombat 9
5. Street Fighter X Tekken v2013
6. King of Fighters 13
7. Persona 4 Arena
8. Player's choice (Any game's that got over 500 votes in their poll, is allowed for the voting process.)

Only 5 of the games' finals will be ran on Sunday, while other games' finals will be held on Friday and Saturday.

OANST 01-09-2013 10:23 AM

So, this is a thing, huh?

Mac Sirloin 01-09-2013 11:30 AM

Fighting games would be great if enjoying them didn't usually require a heavy background in playing fighting games.

No background needed.

Yes, it's my fetish.

No, you can't.

But I can!

But I can!

That's right, this forum doesn't let me do it. So...it's all good now?

OANST 01-10-2013 10:03 AM

No. It most certainly is not "all good."

Steamer_KING 01-10-2013 10:10 AM

Good.

OANST 01-10-2013 10:10 AM

That's the spirit.

Aw, I thought this was going to be a thread about making a MUGEN thing with members of OWF beating the shit out of each other in pixels. I am very disappointed.

I play the odd fighting game and vaguely enjoy them, but I'm horrendously put off by the learning curves usually. And the screaming children egging on a small child about beating a girl when I'm trying take part in a local MvC3 tournament. I still get nightmares about that.

Did I mention I hate small children?

But that's not really relevant, most characters in fighting games are robots, burly men, cuddly animals or women with huge tits. Or at least the ones I own they are. (BlazBlue, Dead or Alive 4, Soul Calibur 4 - would have MvC3 but no money and small children)

NIDHOGG

Phylum 01-10-2013 01:52 PM

I'm really intrigued by that game. Could it be as much fun as everyone says?

I picked up BlazBlue on PS3 a while ago. It was fun for a while and very pretty. In the end I had to leave it because I'm just plain old awful at fighters.

Wings of Fire 01-10-2013 02:53 PM

I like Noel Vermillion

I mean, Blazblue.

I don't have the skills or the time, but that would actually be fun.

Yes, it was fun when I began, but then, I just lost interest in it, it didn't appeal me as much as it did. Skullgirls, however, made me play it everyday on the holiday, on par with SSFIV.

EDIT: Weekly event listings January 11 - 17, 2013

Vyrien 01-10-2013 03:13 PM

I used to play Blazblue quite a lot, I joined a fighting game community and got quite good at it. Eventually I got bored as the continuous updates to the series forced me to have to constantly re-learn my character (Carl).

Played Cammy and C.Viper in SSF4 as well but that game was too slow for me after Blazblue. I also enjoyed Skullgirls but I had no-one to play it with, a shame because I could see myself really enjoying it.

Yeah, I can see that. SSFIV has become very slow in terms of gameplay and strategy. You can still find some opponents with Blankas sitting on the corner and monkey-jumpers, basically jumping all around.

X360 or PS3?

Mr. Bungle 01-10-2013 04:55 PM

I love fighting games. Street Fighter IV is probably one of the only games I consistently play these days. I can never get tired of it.

I bought Street Fighter III off the Xbox Live Market the other day. It's really fun and there are some really unique characters, but goddamn is it hard. I also can't figure out the whole parrying system, much more complex than a simple dodge or block and it seems to be an essential part of the game.

I've also been playing a bit of Marvel vs Capcom 2 again because my college has an arcade cab in its lunch room. It's awesome, and probably one of the best fighters ever, but I'm horrible at it. I mean, I was decent at the PS3 version, but playing with an arcade stick takes some serious getting used to.Still, it's fun to play when you have time to kill between classes.

They also have a Street Fighter VS X-Men machine, and while it's pretty fun the arcade mode is ungodly difficult. I can't even get past round 2.

Daxter King 01-10-2013 09:25 PM

Never been good at them, but I enjoy them. It's hard to buy them though since 90% of the online population in these games surpasses my skill level after the first week.

RoryF 01-10-2013 09:55 PM

I was alright at Mortal Kombat 3 because I managed to complete it, UMK3 however I didn't because of its annoying AI blocking all your moves and using ridiculous combos after about the 4th guy. Kinda put me off actually playing any others, Street Fighter I just ended up button mashing rather than learning moves.

No surprise I still button mash when it comes to fighters today.

Phylum 01-10-2013 11:09 PM

I could never beat Motaro in MK3. I have spent hours grinding up that ladder, but the fucker gets me every time. I much prefer the feel of the newer MKs to that horrible, jagged system that the old ones use.

Really? I used sub-zero and he was a breeze. Shao Kahn is probably the easiest in it though, if you uppercut him, you can quickly run over to him and uppercut him again and repeat it until you win. I don't know if that is effective in UMK3 though. I've never got further than match 5 on UMK3 because they changed the AI to make it really hard even on novice. I can't imagine Motaro being easy on it at all.

Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike is my favourite SF by far, it's so well balanced, fast and it punishes you if you fail, HARD. And the parry system is one of the game turners of all time, since you could be losing but a well parried execution can make you win the round or even make you champion. Don't get me wrong, I really like SSFIV, but it's too easy compared to 3rd Strike and you can see that on how the arcade deals with you. I've beaten the arcade mode of SSFIV on Hardest with Dan without losing any round or match. But I surely can't say the same thing with 3rd Strike. No, I'm not perfect in SSFIV, as you could see by my BP's and PP's and all that, but it's a far more easier game to get into than 3rd Strike. Yes, 3rd Strike was designed to eat yer quarters, but still, it's a far more improving and thoughfull playground than SSFIV.

Ya got SSFIV on PS3? Let's make some fights: KINGodfather.

Mr. Bungle 01-11-2013 04:49 PM

I have it on 360. If you have Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on PS3 I can play that with you, though.

Steamer_KING 01-13-2013 05:22 AM

No, I don't own any MvC, as my friend has 2 and 3 and we play on his XBox.

Here's something:
