My Avatar

Can anyone tell me why my new avatar is in worse quality than my previous one? It's the same image and everything, I used the same program, everything. The only difference is I added something to the image and for some reason, on the forums, it's in worse wuality than my previous.

Varrok 10-04-2012 07:08 AM

Image quality? Because it's a gif and it's limited to 256 colours

Because you made it.

Yeah, when you upload them they're converted to GIF and look shitty.

Varrok 10-04-2012 07:53 AM

It wasn't perfect even before, as OANST pointed out

No, it's the same quality as the previous one, which appeared in more quality than the new one.

Just like his sigpic. I mean, look at the pixelation on that slig!

Varrok 10-04-2012 07:59 AM

Being dicky has apparently become too mainstream for me, so I'll stop criticizing for now

Manco 10-04-2012 08:28 AM

Lookit this poser right here.

I think you'll find that's aliasing.

pupbenny 10-04-2012 09:02 AM

When I compare both my avatars on the forums they look different qualities.

What program are you using to save the GIF?

Nate 10-04-2012 05:36 PM

Because it probably is lower quality.

Now, let's say that you saved it as a jpeg at 90% quality. So your first image was 90% of the theoretical 'perfect' image. Then you took that image, made changes, and then saved it at 90% quality. The new image is 90% of the first image, and thus 81% of the 'perfect' image.

Phylum 10-04-2012 07:06 PM

MS paint is the only program I know to compress GIFs like that. It seems to be the origin of the myth that GIFs are awful. I've never had any issues with the GIMP or Photoshop.

I haven't played around too much with the nifty features in Photoshop, but I know the GIMP handles GIFs really, really well.

I probably saved the previous one at 90% but this one I saved at 100% to make sure. It's still low quality.

Daxter King 10-05-2012 09:41 AM

I thought your name was pube penny the entire thread.

pupbenny 10-05-2012 09:51 AM

No, it isn't even spelt like that. :P

Varrok 10-05-2012 09:57 AM

I pronounce this as 'poypbeenie'. Am I doing it right?

enchilado 10-05-2012 11:39 AM

I've always subconsciously pronounced it as "poopbunny".

Nepsotic 10-05-2012 11:48 AM

I always pronounced it Pub Benny, but now I'm going to call him pube penny because Daxter made me laugh.

Wings of Fire 10-05-2012 12:03 PM

I never cared.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think that jpeg compression is slightly lossy even at 100%.

Phylum 10-05-2012 06:13 PM

I have never seen a jpeg saved without some kind of visible difference from the original non-jpeg.

Save things as PNGs. It will change your life.

Also, what program are you using to save it?

Nepsotic 10-05-2012 11:45 PM

Actually, while we're on the subject, My sigpic is slightly lower quality than it used to be, andi haven't done anything to it.

Varrok 10-06-2012 12:37 AM

When you were away for a day, we hacked into your account and changed the sigpic into a cartoon drawing of a penis, and we kinda messed up this current picture while we were reuploading it

Nepsotic 10-06-2012 12:39 AM

Paint.NET

pupbenny 10-06-2012 06:40 AM

Sorry for double posting but I've done it! :D

I checked what file my previous avatar was and saw it was PNG file. So I merely saved the slig one as a PNG file and Alf's your uncle. It's done. :)

Nepsotic 10-06-2012 11:24 AM

Now I know there's something different here...
