Oddysee 1.6?

So I saw Abes Oddysee version 1.6 on youtube..

I'm wondering exactly what is this? And what's the changes between 1.6 and the final 2.0?

I've only heard of it on kapteeni13's channel, perhaps he'd be willing to tell us, I've never heard of it anywhere else.

I was just trying to look randomly for Abe's Exoddus Prototype. I found new search method in google and tried it. It caused to this result:

and finally found way to download it. I uploaded it to my SkyDrive too for easier download (https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resi...704B99A686!583)

Inside compressed .exe file there is only following files:
AbeWin.exe (When running press F1 to see it's 1.6 ver)
s1.lvl (Main Menu)
r6.lvl (Board Room)
f1.lvl (Paramonia)

I found it with just these files, but this is amazing find. http://www.oddworldforums.net/images...icon10_odd.gif

Only my found difference is loading mug in corner: It's more "thin" looking... but there will be more that i don't know. http://www.oddworldforums.net/images.../icon1_odd.gif

So is this a finished version or not? It doesn't look like it to me, how on earth can this be an updated to 1.0?

skychase2rebirth 05-27-2012 09:44 AM

Is this Paramonia version editable ?

JennyGenesis 05-27-2012 10:19 AM

I doubt it.

I opened it in editor, but when i opened 2nd path there appeared weird object glitches (Massive Large objects, Collision Items at random places, etc)

Not tested how it would react if i would add something and save. :)

Its because the offsets have changed which proves these are different versions of the paths even if they look the same..

Has anyone checked if the decoder app works on it? Maybe there are some new beta cams we've not seen?

JennyGenesis 05-27-2012 11:46 AM

That sounds like a bug exclusive to that .lvl file, because in my experience the CAM's were not showing in the editor.

What versions of AO had those trapdoors colored in orange?

JennyGenesis 05-27-2012 01:13 PM

Only the PSX, and possible the Saturn if that was actually made.

Connell 05-27-2012 02:48 PM

Is it possible that this is the version that was shown at E3 in 1997? It's extremely similar to the original and it's stated very minor changes were made between the beta version that was playable at E3 and the final release?

JennyGenesis 05-27-2012 03:37 PM

I'm of the impression that Version 1.0 was the first official release.

Surely the E3 build would have been earlier than 1.0?

LIJI 05-27-2012 07:50 PM

The release version is 2.0.

Nate 05-28-2012 01:13 AM

Isn't there a different number for the US and European versions?

Connell 05-28-2012 02:44 PM

My PC copy of Oddysee is the 2.0 build, and that's a European copy. I'm unsure of the American release though.

LIJI 06-01-2012 01:38 AM

I did some diffing on the 1.6 r6 path file and the final one, the only differences in the final version is an extra 0-sized collision item and a corrected hoist direction. I haven't checked the rest of the file nor did I check Paramonia yet.

LIJI 06-01-2012 04:27 AM

Also found this difference in Paramonia.

JennyGenesis 06-01-2012 04:54 AM

I feel silly for asking this now, but which version made it into the final version of the game?

Phylum 06-01-2012 05:01 AM

If memory serves the one with the spikey thing.

LIJI 06-01-2012 05:05 AM

The second one (the forum didn't keep the file names).
Also note the final version (2.0) was built only 12 days after this 1.6 beta, so unfortunately we won't find much changes :(

I wish we could find anything older.

Edit: also, considering this beta was generated from a patch (1.6 to 2.0) it could mean these are the only files changed.

Edit 2: According to Wikipedia, the PS version was released in September 1997, and the PC version in October 31st 1997. Versions 1.6 and 2.0 were built in October 10th and 22nd respectively. Judging by the release dates, the PS version shouldn't include the changes introduced in version 2.0. (The bug fix in the final level and that changed Paramonia screen) Can anyone with a PS version handy confirm this?

Edit 3: Notice how the "spike wall" is cut about 8 pixels at the bottom. Seems like it was a quick and dirty last change. :)

kapteeni13 06-01-2012 09:09 AM

In PSX version there is no "Spike wall" :D

Good thing LIJI for searching things out. :)

JennyGenesis 06-01-2012 09:26 AM

So does the spike act as a wall or can you still walk off the end?

LIJI 06-01-2012 09:38 AM

You can still walk off the end.
