OCD's and Other Habbits

I know a while back we had a thread about bad habbits but I thought it's an interesting subject and I'd like to discuss various types of OCD's and the like.

For example, I have a horrible habbit of making everything even. If something happens on my left side, I try to make it happen to my right side. So if I slam my left hand on a desk accidentally, even though it hurts, I make sure I slam my right hand down too.

Feel free to discuss.

Bullet Magnet 05-21-2012 04:25 PM

I do that. Not with painful things, though.

Also, if I step on a crack or slab edge with one foot I try to get the other to step on another with the same part of the foot. If there's nothing more distracting on my mind.

I also draw imaginary lines from the corners of things, usually three from each: parallel with the object's edges, and another from the point at 45 degrees to the other two, or otherwise equidistant from them. Whole rooms become crisscross with lines like imaginary laser beams, and I try not to tread on any. and if I do, the above rule applies.

Again, if my mind is not sufficiently engaged elsewhere.

Wings of Fire 05-21-2012 04:37 PM

I rub my eyebrows, I snap my fingers, I pace frequently, I swivel on the spot, I rap my fingers against my forehead, I stroke my beard even when I don't have one, I pluck at my mustache when I do have one, I sometimes find it hard to move my eyes and head in motion so I fixate on things while my head turns, I glare at things without reason, I snap my fingers more, I wear a coat everywhere and I laugh spontaneously a lot.

Jesus Christ, thats wierd. It's weird because everything you mentioned above, the imaginary lines you're not allowed to step on, the concrete slabs, all that. I do all of that exactly. It's wierd because when I tell other people about it, they think I'm strange. I like to know that other people do the same. However, I also spend half my time in exams organising my pens and pencils. I don't like perpendicularity, for me, it's gotta be the same on both sides otherwise its wrong. Thats why I hate the fact that that my phones earphone input isn't in the middle.

Mr. Bungle 05-21-2012 05:47 PM

I bite my nails, and tend to rub my beard when I have one.

Rub it hard.

DarkHoodness 05-21-2012 05:52 PM

Yeah I'm also guilty of beard rubbing, especially when nervous.

For some reason I love picking up and playing with random objects such as pens, rubber bands or other clutter that's on my desk while I sit here infront of the PC - I think it used to annoy my previous Ex a bit.

Sekto Springs 05-21-2012 06:13 PM

I pick at my thumbs with my index fingers, pretty much every minute of every day. I pick at them until they bleed and become painful, slap a band aid on for a day or two, then start all over again. As a result, I have divots on the side of both of my thumbs.

Nepsotic 05-21-2012 06:20 PM

I eat the inside of my cheeks because it doesn't hurt when you bite bits off. Beat that.

Wings of Fire 05-21-2012 06:28 PM

No thanks.

enchilado 05-21-2012 06:33 PM

I play video games. It's terrible and I wish I had the willpower to stop.

Sekto Springs 05-21-2012 06:45 PM

I compulsively hammer nails through my dick.

Just kidding.

Or am I?

MA 05-21-2012 06:49 PM

when i put things down, they have to be evenly spread apart. there must be a quarter of an inch gap between each object, and positioned like they were locked in a grid. i can't have things touching each other unless they have to. everything on my desk right now is positioned like this. food, on the other hand, i'm not bothered with. i can have gravy curdling with mash and beans and whatever the fuck else and not notice. it all goes down the same gullet.

i also crack my knuckles, stroke my facial hair and repeatedly crack my neck. my neck is always aching which i use as an excuse as to why i crack it, when really it's the other way around.

Mudokon_Master 05-21-2012 08:01 PM

I'm surprised that I can relate to everything in the thread (except hammering nails in your dick).
I feel almost normal to know that I'm not alone with all the weird things I do.
When I'm walking home, I like to take exactly 5 steps between each crack in the footpath. If I miss a step, I go back before the previous crack and walk it again, sometimes taking rediculously huge or tiny steps.

MeechMunchie 05-21-2012 11:21 PM

I stroke my sideburns. Like, all the time. And chew hair off the bottom of my moustache.

Also I bite my nails, to the point where I don't have any, then I just start chewing the skin off the end of my fingers. It hurts a little to use a keyboard, but I've got used to it. Playing the banjo, though; that's a bitch.

Also the whole "symmetrical sensation" thing described above, except I have to do it visually too. If something moves in the corner of my left eye, I have to turn so that it moves in the corner of my right eye too. If I play a video game with bright menu buttons, I have to click the ones on the left as many times as I do the ones on the right.

Phylum 05-21-2012 11:37 PM

I sing to myself, or out loud. There's always music going though my head if I'm not listening to it or playing it. Even then I sometimes have conflicts, which bugs the hell out of me.

When I hear someone playing music flat I raise my head, and lower it when they're sharp.

I constantly tug at my collar when I'm uncertain or stressed. I fidget uncontrollably most of the time. I blink more often than I need to. My leg jigs when under I'm pressure, although that's completely uncontrollable and subconscious.

Mudokon_Master 05-21-2012 11:47 PM

I feel like my eyes are slightly itchy all the time so I always blink super hard. Almost like I'm trying to shut my eyes really tightly to prevent dust getting in them for half a second then I open them again. This is how I usually blink these days.

I also always have a song playing in my head and it's usually an annoying tune which I only know half the lyrics to.

My sister overcame her biting nails habit by getting fake nail(no not the ones you buy in stores, she bit those as well)... The gel-ones you get done at salons. Or get that funky ill-tasting solution that you can paint on them. :o

Anyway its interesting to see so many people with OCD. I didn't know we had such a concentrated community of it.

Habit habits... I tend to pick at thing.. My fingers, scabs, scalp or spots... I cant stop once I start. I just love picking at stuff. Also stickers. As long as its something I can use my nails to pick with. I guess maybe thats why i get horrible scars from even the tiniest cuts. x_x I dont let them heal properly. I've often picked at my scalp until it bled. Probably one of the more disturbing facts about me.
And yea, I also used to bite the inside of my mouth to draw blood. I like blood.

I also have a weird habit of making small sounds coming from my throat. Chris prolly knows what I'm talking about. Just small whimpers that emerge by automation. Been trying to stop it, but it's hard. I'm sure people must think I'm weird when I do it.

scrabface 05-22-2012 12:34 AM

my mama told me not to play with you people anymore

OddjobAbe 05-22-2012 12:51 AM

You're all fucking weird.
And so am I. I have been splitting anything with opposing 90° angles up with hypothetical lines since I was about 5. Don't know why, because I never really cared about geometry or any kind of maths.

I do the same, but with my eyebrows. I must look like a real fucking tool.

I would also like to point out that the first sentence of this post is specifically designed to bother the pedants here who like to follow secure logic.

Huh? Can you elaborate on this? What is secure logic?

The sentence was an oxymoron (depending on the terms on which you view it).

Crashpunk 05-22-2012 02:10 AM

I bite my nails quite bad actually. I sometimes go down right down to the skin so it starts bleeding. It's not good and I've been trying to stop for ages now.

Also, Not sure if it counts but when you have a speech impediment like me, you'll end up doing some weird habbits like coughing on purpose.

JennyGenesis 05-22-2012 02:56 AM

Yeah I bite my nails a lot to, especially when I'm stuck on a game, then it gets real bad.

The worse one for me is my stack of Xbox games, as you can see, they are arranged by game series, but the series is in no particular order, I always gota keep the games in this order, I don't know why, and what really bugs me is that the text for Fuel is upside down, but I gota keep it upside down to keep the Xbox logos in line, one day a friend did move a couple of games and there I was putting them back in the order you see below, another thing annoying me is Ridge Racer Unbounded in the 3rd pile on it's own...

Mudokon_Master 05-22-2012 03:11 AM

Ah, yeah that would piss me off too JG.
A couple of years back, when it was cool to collect/play Yugioh, I always kept my cards arranged in alphabetical order. Same with all my games and books.
I also hate having junk files on my computer (in my downloads folder, on my desktop, my documents etc.) If my computer is messy, my overall mood is shitty.

Jordan 05-22-2012 04:08 AM

I bite the skin around my fingernails, usually until they become very sore and bleed. This doesn't seem to be due to boredom or something to do with my hands, because I'll only do it if the skin on my fingers feels too rough or there's a bit of skin that I can pull off. I think I sub-consciously bite the skin to make my fingers smoother, even though it makes them worse.

Crashpunk 05-22-2012 04:15 AM

I too arrange my games. It's a habbit indeed but it's not a bad one :)

Phylum 05-22-2012 05:30 AM

All 63 of my PS2 games are in alphabetical order, but that's because it was too much of a pain to look through them all to find anything particular.

Nepsotic 05-22-2012 07:20 AM

All my games are with other games in their series, in chronological order. And all my series' are in order of enjoyment. Valve games at the front.

I do that. It's like a sort of squeaky muffled yawn, or mewling with my mouth closed. I always feel like my throat is very slightly blocked.

Also, since my nose broke I sniff a lot.

"Weird" is a deviation from the norm, but if we are all weird then weird is normal, thus we are all normal and not weird in the slightest. So the logical conclusion of that sentence is the perfect opposite of its literal intention.

Also, since my nose broke I sniff a lot.

I read that as "since my nose broke off I sniff a lot."
