Your favourite Oddworld game?
My favourite Oddworld game is Abe's Oddysee.
I pretty much think its the best game ( my opinion ) But I decided to make this because on my post that I was introducing myself it turned into what's the best Oddworld game, and I wasnt making an argument on it so just leave a reply on what yours is because im interested to see how many other people prefer different Oddworld games that Abe's Oddysee. Goodbah :fuzcool: |
Abe's Exoddus because it's much bigger, has QuikSave and you can save anywhere. Plus I find it slightly easier than Oddysee in difficulty, probably because of QuikSave.
I must mention the annoying Slig Barracks though, but that Slig possession music on that level is great. |
Thanks for the reply

I like AO and AE equally. While AE is bigger, has more varied environments and more interesting puzzles, AO nails the horrific, brutal atmosphere of Oddworld better and is more of a challenge.
You're welcome. |
I know AE is bigger and in most cases better [game wise] but I just seem to enjoy playing AO more, thanks for the feedback
|
I do love the feeling of the stockyards. The atmosphere and music are absolutely perfect.
|
The one I said was my favourite in that part of the profile we have reserved for this question.
|
My personal favourite will always be Exoddus; It certainly lacked some of the atmosphere of its predecessor, but it made up for it with much varied and improved upon gameplay mechanics. The story was pretty damn good too.
I think my favourite thing about AE though was the fact that you felt like you were doing real damage to the whole cartel this time, instead of simply turning off one factory. |
I think of Abe's Exoddus like Fallout: New Vegas, the game looks and feels exactly like the previous one, but with a new storyline and gameplay elements, thats why AE is my favorite, because it's just like a much better version of AO.
|
Abe's Exoddus.
Everything good about Abe's Oddysee made much better. Not to mention it was much longer, had new elements such as emotions and possessing other creatures and Quicksave, also known as my best friend in the world :) |
Damn, your life must suck if Quicksave is your best friend :p
Also, AE is only your favorite because your too pussy to attempt a 99 mud run on AO without save states :p |
I like AO and AE roughly the same amount. AO has better atmosphere, setting, art and level progression while AE has much better raw gameplay.
The cutscenes in AE are bigger in scope, but apart from a couple of them, I prefer the more linear, serious ones in AO. |
Great feedback, still AO IS THE BEST!

To keep on topic, although I prefer the appearance and gameplay and story of AE, QuikSave ruined it for me. It makes it incredibly easy. Finding secret areas could have been a bit of a challenge but then they went and put in 'hints' (IE markers) to show where almost all of them were. So, AO. |
AE would have been next to impossible without some form of quicksave though. If you look at the puzzles, some of them are much, much harder than AO's - On the first playthrough, quicksave gave me the right balance between frustratingly hard and too easy to be challenging.
Of course now that I know how to do all the puzzles, quicksave makes the game too easy - But that doesn't matter. However maybe in a re-make, there should be an option to turn off quicksave and have AO's style of saving instead, as some form of challenge mode? I will agree that the hidden areas shouldn't have been marked. |
Lorne Lanning himself once gave a hit that when lookng for secret areas in AO, listening for the sounds of things you can't see on the screen.
Example, the very first screen of AO, you can hear meat saws, on the secret area right below, there are 3 of them. So AO did sort of have markers. |
Yeah but the sounds weren't specific to hidden areas and were subtle if you've never played the game before - And there weren't sounds for every hidden area. That worked well, it's a shame it wasn't like that in AE.

Guys, I don't think the target audience of AE was 'People who enjoy not being able to find the secret areas'. I think it was more 'People who can find the secret areas and have fun attempting them.'

I like each the same, Oddysee had more atmosphere and was more challenging, Exoddus was larger and varied, as a few of you have already said, but I did find Exoddus a bit easier, the puzzles weren't all too puzzling and most of the secrets were a bit easier to find, I definitely liked being able to call for more than one mudokon at a time though, I found that a little frustrating in Oddysee.

Do I just provoke arguments, every thread I make there's one argument, come on guys, get along, I just wanted to find out what your favourite game was :P

I actually really dislike hidden things in games that don't let you know you're in the right general area to look for them. For example, finding 100 collectables in a sandbox game is pretty ridiculous if it means spending hours re-travelling a huge empty map looking for the last one or two you missed.
If you get a hint of the general area, you can enjoy a game without spending an unreasonable amount of time checking every corner in every area you pass. Once you know something is near, you can focus your efforts on finding it. I must have played AO ten times or more desperately trying to get the last three mudokons that I kept missing. I finally gave up and used a walkthrough. With AE, I completed it first time with 300 muds and no help. I started over ALOT before that (mostly from getting stuck and wanting to replay the first half of the game again) but the point is that the skill and effort put in were rewarded, not wasted. The achievment of finding the hidden area in a screen and then completing the challenge inside is enough, I don't think the risk of wasting an entire playthrough is worth the slightly larger sense of achievment you get if you're lucky enough and good enough not to miss anything. |
I like both AO/AE.AE does have easy to see markers for secret areas, but in AO finding secret areas isnt so hard, you just need to explore,if you hear sounds of meat saws look around,if you notice falling rocks go for it,or you can just randomly hit any wall till abe crouches and goes in a secret area.Or if you see a slig on a lonely ledge....
