Animated OW Signature Attempt
 

Guess it was too much to ask for, but never mind. I did learn something from making this. Here's the original post:

Since it seems my iconic marquee signature has stopped working in Chrome for some unknown reason (at least for me anyway, I haven't asked others about this yet - It works fine in the Steam browser though), I created a new one by using a combination of fraps, VLC media player and Adobe Imageready, in an incredibly complex way:

If it's not too large/obnoxious/distracting, I'd like to use the second version. However, it's made from a composition of 7 images to separate the animations and keep the file-size down as low as possible (hence also the low framerate - it weighs in at 368 kbs in total I think), and that's not allowed in signatures.

So uhm, if it's agreeable (and possible), can a mod or admin edit my sig for me please? :) I've kept the HMTL code of my old sig, and backed it up, so don't worry about losing that.

On my computer your current signature works correctly in both Chrome and Firefox 11.

For me, in chrome, the marquee doesn't loop correctly. It says "Only 1,236 work related" and then it starts again.

Works in firefox though.

Yeah it started doing that 3 days ago for me, I don't know why.

Still, the image looks better IMO - Although the size and low framerate, and the fact that it's animated may annoy people. But then it may not even be possible to have as a sig anyway.

The only thing that bothers me about it is that Abe and the chant suppressor aren't moving at all.

Your sig is broken on my screen, which is a shame because it was one of the better ones.

I think you should be allowed just this once, It could be a reward for making Rupture Farms in Minecraft. It's not even distracting, Animated GIFs on forums never bother me unless they are huge and are bigger then your post.

Yeah it's really cool. I wouldn't mind if it's allowed.

Hmm... After some consideration, I'll make a second version of the signature. Maybe I should host it here instead of on DA, though. Watch this space.

New improved! Thanks for the suggestion, Ench! Although I don't know what cases the big space between text in forum posts and the top of the table. Anyone with a better knowledge of HTML than me know how to fix that?

Requests for signature changes do not require open discussion; they should be PMed to a mod. Given that you've shown some creativity here and people seem to like what you've done, I'm simply going to move this to FC rather than close it.


That said, the answer is no. You got in just before the rule changed about marquees in sigs and we thought the fairest thing to do would be to let you keep it. That said, the fact that you currently have a marquee in your sig is not justification enough to bend the rules further and let you have an animated sig. For one thing, animated sigs are really annoying and distracting. For another, if we make an exception for you, what is going to stop everyone else requesting special dispensation?

And all this time I thought that you only let me keep it 'cause it was a homage to AO and in good taste. But that doesn't change the fact that it's broken now in Chrome, so I'll be getting rid of it once I come up with something else. People never told me if it annoyed them, though.

My reasoning for this topic was that I was under the impression my signature was iconic in some way, and finding out that it was broken prompted me to want to upgrade it to something better - Except I wanted to pass my idea publicly with people first just in case it was too annoying, and find out if it was even possible to have in the first place.

Oh well, at least I learned a bit more about making GIFs and using HTML to display lots of images together, so it wasn't a complete waste of time. Maybe seeing that everywhere would have gotten annoying after a while, even though stuff like that doesn't seem to be a problem on other forums I lurk at.

Well, firstly, I should have mentioned that DH's current sig still works for me. Secondly, since his current sig is about 1/10th of the size of most members', I'd say it's rather less annoying than most unanimated ones.

It's about as obtrusive as mine.

I think it's pretty darn iconic, and I'll be sad to see it gone, even if it has been three years since I bothered reading it all.

And the reason for letting you keep it was discussed at some length in EL in the usual way (which is to say, someone suggested you keep it, and everyone agreed with them because agreeing is more fun than arguing, which is how most long discussions in EL tend to pan out).

you sig still works in my browser ._. Are you sure its not just your browser that broke?

Seems to be just a Chrome problem. I tried changing the code a bit, to no avail. But I can't think of anything better that's actually "legal" anyway, so I'll be leaving it for now.
