Retro Technology

Since there's a Future Technology thread, I thought it would be cool to go the other way, older technology. I have quite a few old stuff at the moment but hopefully I will find more to post here in future. At the moment, I have these two laptops.

First is the Compaq Presario 1200EU, it's not a full size laptop, and used to run Windows ME (also has the serial key on the bottom). It now runs 2000 and is pretty heavy considering it's size.

http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1331017831
The keyboard on it is one of the old clicky ones so I like that a lot, and they're not completely flat like todays laptop keyboards. Also the screen is 800x600 so the BIOS/Windows 2000 Bootscreen look kind of stretched weird on it.

http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1331017919
The lid of it is silver which is strange because the rest of the laptop is black, it doesn't matter too much though.

As you can see it's pretty thick for a laptop, but not too bad, you can also see the dual PCMCIA card slots and the headphone + microphone jacks.

Specs: 64MB RAM, 700MHz Processor, Windows 2000, 6GB Hard Drive, CD-ROM, Floppy, PCMCIA, VGA, Printer, PS/2 Mouse, and Dial-Up Modem

Second is the Toshiba Libretto, a really small Windows 98 computer that can run lots of stuff, also very light. The RAM has been maxed out on it and the hard drive has also been upgraded to the max via official means.

http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1331018713
The large thing sticking out of the Libretto is the 5 hour battery I bought for it not long ago. Also, there's some slight marks on the lid but not so much noticable really.

http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1331018806
The back has little ports, just an infrared port and a speaker, these can of course be extended using the port replicators below.

http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1331018870
See how thin it is, just two DSis thick, not bad for 1997.

http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1331018937
Here's the small docking station (port replicator), not much on this one but you should be able to see it's ports.

http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1331018997
Here's the large docking station, much bigger and carries an extra PCMCIA slot.

http://www.oddworldforums.net/attach...1&d=1331019045
Finally here's the external floppy drive, I don't really use it but it's there if I ever need to.

Specs: 32MB RAM, 1.51GB Hard Drive, 122MHz Processor, Infrared, VGA, Speakers, PS/2, Serial, Printer, and 2 PCMCIAs.

Post your old stuf below!

Ah, I've already told you I love this shit, but I thought I'd make a note about me wanting a gameboy. The original.
The main reason for this is it has a really old and small sound card in there I desperately need to get myself into chiptune
It's really neat! Something I really want to get into.

This was a high point.

EDIT fixed. Google really should tell you if this will happen, because it sits in my cache and continues to work for me.

As I've said before, I collect Retro Consoles and games. I started about a year ago and so far I have a NES, N64, Megadrive (Which sadly doesn't work on my TV) PS1, PS2, Gameboy Colour (+2) One is my limited edtion Pokemon gameboy which I played when I was younger

Anyway, It's better to show some pics.
Here is when when I got my NES and started collecting consoles, £34.99 for the console, 2 controllers, Zapper and games. The guy said I was so lucky I got their because it just arrived in the store and was the best price he had seen.

My limited Edition Gameboy (very important to me)

And despite not having a SNES, I have one game I found at a crazy cheap price

Wings of Fire 03-06-2012 08:35 AM

Oh, I had that game boy. I dunno what happened to it though.

Crashpunk 03-06-2012 08:41 AM

I got it for Christmas and it was bundled with Pokemon Gold. Best Christmas ever. I wish I kept the box though :(

I think I said this in another thread but whatever, I'll say it again. my Pokemon Gold actually died a couple of months ago (It doesn't save) and I was so upset, I've seen there is a way to fix it but I don't have the right screwdriver to open the cart up. Anyway i'm rambling for too long, I'll stop here. :)

RoryF 03-06-2012 09:13 AM

I remember the old msn hotmail, in fact, I still have a hotmail.com account because of how old mine is. I always used that msn gaming zone and MyMSN page.

Crashpunk 03-06-2012 09:18 AM

oh god! I remember msn gaming zone! I use to play Age of Empires II: Age of Kings with it. They were Good times :)

RoryF 03-06-2012 09:27 AM

Microsoft Golf 1999 Edition is where it's at.*

*Stolen from the Windows 98 SE CD...

JennyGenesis 03-06-2012 09:44 AM

I used to use MSN Gaming Zone as well. Such a shame they shut it down :(

I'll just list what retro stuff I have otherwise I'll be here forever sorting out pictures.

Atari 2600.
NES
NES Zapper
NES Game Genie
Sega Mega Drive II
Sega Mega CD II
Sega Dreamcast
SNES
Sega Game Gear (which won't power on and I've yet to find out why)

The only problem I have it trying to get the Mega Drive/Mega CD to work on my TV. As strange as this sounds, you can have no colour with sound or colour with no sound...

Wings of Fire 03-06-2012 09:48 AM

If a Dreamcast is retro then I'm very very old.

Varrok 03-06-2012 10:30 AM

I've always wanted to own a NES console. Too bad they were never supported in my country :/

MeechMunchie 03-06-2012 11:29 AM

I've got a Mega Drive II.

If a Dreamcast is retro then I'm very very old.

I believe it is considered retro.

Wings of Fire 03-06-2012 12:57 PM

Generally implies a vintage of at least fifteen to twenty years, apparently.

Dreamcast was released in 1998. It's free from hipsterdom for another year or so.

Crashpunk 03-06-2012 01:03 PM

What are the big differences between the Megadrive and Megadrive II?
I know that the first Megadrive doesn't support the AV cables, only the Aerial ones (Which sucks because it doesn't work on my TV)

Also, I like to think anything before this current gen of Video Games is considered 'Retro' because it's old and isn't in production anymore.

Personally I feel The Dreamcast is considered more 'Retro' then the PS2 and Xbox because it was the last Sega console and it was discontinued in 2002 which was very early.

EDIT: Holy shit, I've just done some research and the PS2 Slimline hasn't been discontinued yet. That is amazing, I thought the PS2 died a long time ago :eeek:

Jordan 03-06-2012 01:26 PM

I'm so jealous Crashpunk, I keep meaning to collect some old consoles (Especially the SNES and the N64). I'd better get started before they rocket to ridiculous prices. At least I still have a Sega Megadrive and a PS1!

Crashpunk 03-06-2012 01:56 PM

The Super Nintendo is number 1 on my list. I really want one, Complete with box and everything.

The cheapest I've seen complete SNES go for on eBay is around £40/£50, with games and maybe some other stuff like controllers around £70.

Completed games are sometimes more expensive then the console itself which kinda sucks but makes sense.

A completed copy of Zelda: A Link To the Past is around £50 and in my opinion is totally worth it.

Oh and if your not a OCD collector like me, The console on it's own (with the cables and a controller of course) is around £30/£40. Worth it.

JennyGenesis 03-06-2012 02:57 PM

I don't think the Mega Drive II support AV cables without modifications. When hooked up to my Mega CD II there are audio plugs for AV but no video.

I don't think there are any major differences. The reason I bought one over the model 1 is because I personally think that the model 2 is better looking.

Jordan 03-06-2012 10:48 PM

Zelda: AlttP is £50? Fuckity fuck. I dread to think how much Super Mario World/All-Stars is. That puts me down a little.

Crashpunk 03-07-2012 04:31 AM

Actually Super Mario All-Stars is currently going for £18.99 on eBay, Very cheap indeed.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUPER-MARI...b#ht_918wt_952

In my opinion, buying compete retro games for £50- is worth it. Especially if it's like Link to the Past. I like to play games on it's original platform as well more then VC or emulator.

RoryF 03-07-2012 10:19 AM

Anyone who owns a Zenith SuperSport 286 laptop computer is awesome, I totally want one! Even if it only just runs Windows 3.0 (I think it has 640KB RAM and Windows 3.1 requires 1MB :O) it's still awesome.

OANST 03-07-2012 11:13 AM

Today I used a calculator.

My first mobile phone, had a Bart Simpson case for it. It was only 3 years ago that I actually decided to upgrade it. Of course I can't mention this without mentioning how great snake was!

Varrok 03-07-2012 11:45 AM

I still have my Nokia 3510i in a good condition, but it's not much of a surprize, the phone will probably last longer than human race

STM 03-07-2012 12:48 PM

FUCKING SPACE IMPACT II JENNY!

JennyGenesis 03-07-2012 12:54 PM

YES!

I remember that! Just as addicting as Snake!
