The Healthy Living Thread

I was going to incorporate this into a blog but I figured it might be interesting to turn it into a little thread of its own instead.

What sparked its creation was two particular ailments I've been suffering from recently to very recently. First and foremost was the sudden speed up of my metabolism, its interesting because I think it coincides with a period of increased stress making at a hormonal change rather than a genetic one, but basically I've gone from around 11.5 stone December 2010 to 10.3 stone December 2011. Somewhat more interestingly is how much that second number fluctuates. I can gain about five lbs one weeks and drop more than that in another. To remedy the situation I think I'm going to have to force myself to have a substantial breakfast, eat regularly and once it warms up, go for tri-weekly jogs. I was wondering if anyone else had any ideas beyond, 'eat fatty foods and lots of em'.

Secondly, I realised today that I seem to be suffering from a build up of uric acid, aka...I'm beginning to suffer from the early pangs of gout in both big toes. This could be caused by a number of things such as a sudden intake of around 500ml of strong vodka last week as well as the problem stated in the above paragraph. To remedy this I think I'll start eating more bananas as well as to drink more water than I do currently, (I rarely drink more than 3 glasses of water a day). If anyone has a cure for the early pangs of pre-gout acidic build up, perhaps you would be so kind as to post below.

Oh and furthermore, if you have any information or questions of your own, perhaps you could go ahead and note them down here, maybe you go to the gym, play sport, partake in a diet of some description.

Hell I've quit smoking as well, a quarter of a year without so much as a single toke next week.

Jordan 12-20-2011 11:25 AM

Congratulations on quitting the smokes. Keep it up. I would suggest cutting down on the booze, but you did mention before that you did drink quite rarely. Perhaps when you do have your big drinking sessions, cut down a little on the amount, that would be a nice start.

I wish I had the willpower to eat healthily. I think when I go to university I'm going to have a go at it. Either that or live off pot noodles, which most people tend to do anyway.

STM 12-20-2011 12:12 PM

Thanks man, and it's not just smokes, it's hookah and weed as well, complete and utter cold turkey! ^_^

I figure my eating habits will go downhill if I have the luxury of attending university, student diets are invariably worse than those of people our age or post graduation, at least that is the note I have made.

Crashpunk 12-22-2011 11:48 AM

I don't drink. It's a choice I decided a long time ago. I feel its pointless to get drunk and become ill if you can have a good time without booze. I don't hate drinking or others drinking, I've actually drunk in the past but I didn't like it. I am however aganist smoking and drugs so I have huge respect for you STM that you want to stop doing them, Keep it up! :)

DarkHoodness 12-22-2011 02:01 PM

A little drink from time to time is actually healthy for you, they say. So long as you don't overdo it or get drunk every night or so.

Wings of Fire 12-22-2011 02:04 PM

There is a correlation between people (saying they are) having 1+ glasses of drink a day and living longer.

This is about as weak as statistics get.

Sekto Springs 12-22-2011 04:11 PM

I drank almost a gallon of full-fat egg nog today. Couldn't feel better.

Youngsy 12-23-2011 11:58 AM

Guinness is good for you because it has alot of iron in it, not to mention it's fucking delicious too. I've recently gave up smoking, nearly two weeks now, because I'm thinking of joining the paratroopers. I know I need to get fitter so I started going to the gym again and I'm going to brush up on my jogging and enturance as thats what it's mostly about.

Strangely I didn't even find it that difficult to give up smoking, only had a craving when I was slightly drunk, as you would I guess. Although I reckon it's just because I set myself a goal, I didn't give up for the hell of it because I actually enjoy smoking, a statment I will stand by until I am diagnosed with a terminal illness.

That's totally not how nutrition works.

Youngsy 12-23-2011 12:37 PM

I say it to hide my crippling alcoholism.

STM 12-23-2011 01:18 PM

A true British northerner I see ;D

Ridg3 12-23-2011 02:43 PM

Back to kickboxing for me I reckon. And it's about time to. Although I'm not at all, physically, out of shape there's moments when a bit of exertion would kill me. Bad times I reckon.

Although I've long since put the final nail into the drink coffin I'm continuing my affair with smoking, because I like it. But yeah, back to the ring for me. I used to love it, so I did, going down twice a week for a bit of strenuous sparring and a few laps around the footie pitch. Not too mention going to the oul tournaments (came second in the Irish Open xD)

I'm upset I stopped (because of busy schedule) because I've lost my ability to run for long periods of time, but more importantly, I've lost my elasticity. I'm really fucked off about that.

Dixanadu 12-23-2011 06:54 PM

I have no intention to stop drinking or smoking til I feel seriously ill.

Once you're feeling seriously ill, you're not going to get better. From that point you may as well just keep drinking and smoking and enjoy the short time you have left as best you can.

You know it, my friend haha.

i smoke because i enjoy it. the day i no longer enjoy it is the day i say "fuck this". i know that's been said many times before by people that got fed up but couldn't quit, but fuck it, i'll take my chances.

i could do with drinking less, i know that. BUT HEY IT'S CHRISTMAS

i also invested in a punchbag a few weeks ago, so i've been giving that a whirl. been thinking about taking up boxing, too, but they're all out of town. might just bite the bullet and go for it though.

fucking tell me about it. too many kids actually believe you can survive on nothing but Guinness becus it has dem ironz. it's fucking wank.

Crashpunk 12-24-2011 01:51 PM

To keep healthy I go jogging most nights with my mates after collage. We do some simple streches outside before we start then we jog around 2/3 miles. We've stopped doing it recently because we've all been ill and of course Xmas but we will start after the new year :)

I never said you can survive on Guinness, if you're making a kick towards me.

You say that as if an excess of iron is somehow beneficial.. Iron's really not the healthiest of things to have a lot of. It's not good for the, uhh, bowels.

I used to eat a lot of unhealthy stuff, but since university I've become far healthier; cooking a lot of meals from scratch, plenty of fruit and veg.

That said, it's all got down the pan in the last few days, due to the exuberance of, how should I call it, ''Christmas spirit(s)''. Before long I think I'll be pissing cointreau and shitting advocat.

STM 12-26-2011 06:13 AM

Mmm, advocaat...snowball.

My sister got the same thing, it somehow reminded me of an easter egg, the way they're packaged with little goodies and all that...

As for snowballs, I've just been making them the 'old fashioned way', if such a thing exists.

Jordan 12-26-2011 07:50 AM

Yeah, my mum bought some Advocaat some time ago and I've been having home-made Snowballs. They're good but nowhere near the same as the cold crispness you get from the bottles.

STM 12-26-2011 10:14 AM

I've only ever had home made, which is good in a way because you can choose how much advocaat to lemonade you have. I like to go just under 1/2 advocaat which isn't standard in premixed drinks I don't expect.

Wow, just under half, now that's a thick dosage haha

I usually cover the bottom of a tumbler two or three times in advocaat before pooling in the lemonade and ice.

STM 12-26-2011 10:34 AM

Do you go the extra mile and add the lemon, lime and sugar to make it a proper snowball or ignore that last bit like I do?

Jordan 12-26-2011 12:35 PM

We always add Lime for the extra kick. My mum used to drown my snowballs in lemonade so they tasted really sour. I don't know why she did, but they tasted rank.

MA 12-26-2011 12:42 PM

i haven't had any snowballs yet. :(

i will eventually.
