Rubik's Cubism

MOD EDIT: This thread split off from WDYLL here.

Back on topic, I thought I might photograph this mighty accomplishment :D
It originally took me 3 days to complete, today at school I solved it in 20 minutes and when I got home, it only took me 5 minutes. I'm quite proud of myself actually.

You look tired as hell, your eyes are all red, xP great job though, those things were a bitch untill my friend taught me the trick behind them.

Mudokon_Master 11-07-2011 11:31 PM

That's actually because I was trying to figure it out all night last night, haha :P

StrangerEastwood 11-07-2011 11:35 PM

You have more dedication than I do, I would promptly show Mr. Rubik the general direction in which I would like him to fuck off. lol

JennyGenesis 11-08-2011 12:08 AM

Pffffft, stop trying to fool us Mudokon_Master!

We all know that really that was just a brand new cube you bought ;)

AvengingGibbons 11-08-2011 03:39 AM

The easiest way to solve it is to take the colours off and put them back in the right places :) I've solved the rubix cube lots of times using this method

T-nex 11-08-2011 04:18 AM

I never have the patience for Rubiks cube x_x

jumper 11-08-2011 10:54 AM

Are you planning on getting faster, or just having it as something you can do?

Crashpunk 11-08-2011 12:20 PM

hehehe

StrangerEastwood 11-08-2011 12:37 PM

Dirty. lol

MA 11-08-2011 06:38 PM

those dirty motherfuckers.

Mudokon_Master 11-08-2011 09:16 PM

You sick bastards.
But I want to get into speed cubing as soon as I get a decent cube that turns properly.

I hope by "colours" you mean the cubelets. If you do the stickers it will look ugly and feel wierd.

We call them cubies ;)

Mudokon_Master 11-09-2011 01:01 AM

I just realised this was turned into its own thread.
I call them squares which is stupid because they're not :/

Nate 11-09-2011 01:02 AM

I split this discussion off to its own thread. Mainly because I wanted to post this video and couldn't bring myself to spam up WDYLL.

This was built by a bunch of my students. :D

Mudokon_Master 11-09-2011 01:05 AM

Holy crap that's amazing :P
But you mean you actually taught the people who made the robot or just know them?

Nate 11-09-2011 01:13 AM

I taught them labs in Intelligent Systems and they were building that robot at the same time in a different unit. I was spitting chips, as I had wanted to do a Rubik's Cube solving robot in my final year and wasn't given permission to do so.

T-nex 11-09-2011 01:24 AM

Why not?? o__o A rubiks cube solving robot is amazing :p

Mudokon_Master 11-09-2011 01:53 AM

Freaking Asians! Can't even see their hands moving.

My supervisor didn't allow it because it wasn't enough of a real-world problem and wouldn't look good enough in industry when I came to applying for jobs. Meanwhile, those guys got on the news and had job offers before they'd even graduated.

T-nex 11-09-2011 03:34 AM

But aren't you supposed to be able to decide your own project? Like, I understand that they'd advise against it, but you should be able to make your own decisions x_x

Anyway I think maybe it's because that even a few years ago, people weren't so much into "funny"and "creativity" when it came to professional shit. Maybe they were more into practical stuff. I dunno though. But today's world seems just about crazy enough to accept an rubiks cube solving machine.

Though in a way it seems awesome enough for any time period.

Projects have to be approved by a supervisor because cost/benefit.

T-nex 11-09-2011 03:43 AM

oh... Well that sucks :( ... Was probly just a grumpy supervisor.

it's funny to think that sometimes someone else has such a great influence on how your life turns out.

Dynamithix 11-09-2011 04:28 AM

That's awesome, Nate.

Hax.

Seriously. how the fuck can someone do that?

jumper 11-09-2011 01:43 PM

This is me, for what it's worth

I have a competition this weekend :)

Dixanadu 11-09-2011 03:36 PM

Rubik's Cubes are quite fun.

I was invited to a friends a while ago and she had one laying around. Spent about four hours with it until I completed it.

Then, everyone was drunk and there was no alcohol left.

sigh

I read somewhere that no matter how messed up the cube is, you can always solve it with a certain combination and number of moves. If that's true it's just a matter of memorizing and practice. The robot ealier works with the same principle I think.

moxco 11-09-2011 06:41 PM

I've never heard of such a pattern and if it did exist it wouldn't be used in a world record. There are certain methods for switching square x and square y without rearranging the rest of the cube. A cubist (or whatever the demonym is) needs to memorise these methods and must be able to quickly figure out which ones to use.
