Stewart Gilray on PSNation podcast

http://oddworldlibrary.net/blog/2011...ation-podcast/

I already spent way too long writing this up, so I’ll just copypaste the most interesting points:
  • SW HD will have some brand new Easter eggs, including a reference to Munch’s Oddysee and another reference to an unnamed Oddworld game (described as “the game that isn’t Munch or Stranger”)
  • Although they have a release window they are aiming for, the team are not thinking about release dates, taking a “when it’s done” approach to development. The release date will be finalised in Sony QA testing, and the release date and price will be announced simultaneously. Munch and Stranger will not be released in Japan, at least for the time being.
  • It was also revealed that in order to meet the release window, the initial release of the PS3 version will not include 3D or Move support as previously announced, but that these features will be added in a patch when ready.
  • Gilray suggested that the PSNation team should livestream Stranger HD during their Extra Life event, although this has not been confirmed as a definite part of the event.
  • Michael Bross was confirmed to be working on the audio for Abe HD, although whether he was working as a composer or simply in a technical role was not discussed.
  • Finally, Stewart Gilray will be speaking at an as-yet unannounced event in November.

e: Off-Topic =/= Oddworld Discussion, how did this happen
e2: Thanks T-nex.

No problem, I moved it :)

The new easter eggs part sounds interesting.

MeechMunchie 10-18-2011 12:42 PM

Good news all round then.

Crashpunk 10-19-2011 07:41 AM

Nice!

Sekto Springs 10-19-2011 08:50 AM

Aw man, I hate Michael Bross... at least musically.
Otherwise good news :)

DarkHoodness 10-19-2011 09:16 AM

I on the other hand love what Michael Bross did for the Stranger soundtrack and am glad that he's still involved with Oddworld, and will be working on Abe HD. :)

Manco 10-19-2011 11:28 AM

I’m interested to see whether Bross will be creating his own soundtrack, or simply remixing/remastering the original AO/AE soundtracks.

Personally, I love SW’s music but dislike the style used in MO. Will be interesting to see which is more apparent in Abe HD.

DarkHoodness 10-19-2011 11:29 AM

I think the music for MO is like it is for the same reason the rest of the game is like it is. It was a rushed job. Abe HD won't have that problem I hope.

Sekto Springs 10-19-2011 03:00 PM

Thing is, Abe's Oddysee and Exoddus had such unique music that captured it's atmosphere perfectly. Rich with bizarre percussion, world instruments, and wonderfully weird synths. Bross's style is appropriate for Oddworld, but it's also quite different from Ellen Meijers' and Josh Gabriel's work.

If he's just on board for sound design, I have no qualms. If he's producing another score rife with lengthy synth drones and structureless percussion loops, I'll be one sad panda. If he's working to recreate the original soundtracks with more up to date sounds (like I've been trying to), then I wish him luck.

Crashpunk 10-20-2011 01:54 AM

They cannot change the music completely, for starters the fans won't like it and its a re-master of a already released game so the music has to be the same (re-mastered/re-mixed of course).

If they added more sound effects and music to increase the tenson of the game, that would be awesome. :)

The Abe game is going to be a remake, not a remaster. So whilst I hope that the music is consistent in style (at the very least) with the original, it's not entirely necessary.

Sounds like you've described the second half of the SW soundtrack, to me.

STM 10-20-2011 10:09 AM

I think the SW soundtrack was fantastic for conveying the Western atmosphere, but MO sounded too alien and techno-ish for my liking.

Dynamithix 10-20-2011 10:39 AM

Munch's Chair Groove was neat.

Sekto Springs 10-20-2011 10:54 AM

That's the only track from the MO soundtrack I like, though I think it has too much of a club music flare. I can't help but think of a gay bar when the bass kicks start up.

Also, I just want to clear the air and say that I don't think that Bross's music is bad. It is what it is. I just don't like it personally.

Meanwhile in Bross' house - "I sense a disturbance."
