How to make with a tenner.

So my school and college is trying to raise a lot of money by giving every student £10 in the hope they will return a profit. The winner gets an iPad 2. I don't really want an iPad because it's not something I need or will get much use out of I expect but making money from almost nothing appeals to me greatly. Furthermore I thought it might be a good discussion to have here. So, does anyone reckon they can make a decent return on £10 ($15 ish, €11 ish or 16 AUD) if so how.

It can be as bizarre or realistic as you like. My personal idea was to buy and sell cigarettes or salvia divinorum. Something people want but can't easily get themselves.

EDIT: Oh yes and your plan has until Easter 2012 before the deadline and the money is collected.

Get yourself a pizza and be done with it.

So uh... it's a school project, right?

If you have till easter 2012, get 10 pound a year hosting and set up a small website with Adsense ads on it. Ask people to randomly click on them here and there (don't overdo it and don't ask for it on the site itself or you'll get banned).

Should get you about 10 to 15 pounds a month if you do it right, with minimal effort. That's about 70 or so pounds in the pocket and a free iPad you can sell for a few hundred. That, my man, is a good deal.

Well it's a way of the college pretending to everyone that we are entrepreneurs and we can make lots of money and however is the bestest gets a prize...I just wanna see how much I can make and then I'll keep it for myself if I managed to make something outrageous, which I doubt. But hey, I've never been given £10 for free before, at least, not by the government...which this practically is because it's a public institution. But I digress.

Funny thing was the teach said that they won't ask any questions about how we get the money...they just want it. ^_^ Capitalist at its finest boys and girls.

EDIT: Sounds like a pretty ok idea Havoc.

Havoc 09-19-2011 09:21 AM

That's an open invitation to drug dealing or other illegal activities. Can't say I agree with that part. The money should be acquired legally. Not that my idea is 100% legal, but at least its not as bad as dealing drugs or something.

STM 09-19-2011 09:24 AM

Well I don't think that's what they meant but nevertheless is does sound a little odd doesn't it. Still, salvia is legal in the UK and if I can...hell even without my Mum's permission, I could sell the stuff.

Manco 09-19-2011 09:34 AM

Just save a bunch of money from your work, then pretend you earned it from the original money. If they aren’t asking, why bother?

STM 09-19-2011 09:41 AM

Yeah but why would I want to give the school money I actually earned just for a crappy iPad 2 in return, I just wanted to see how entrepreneurial we could all be. Havoc's idea actually seems all right but I do really like the idea of selling salvia...just wondering if anyone can beat those.

JennyGenesis 09-19-2011 09:46 AM

Or just go and spend the tenner on something you like.

A 10 pack of John Smiths Extra Smooth cost me exactly 10 pounds at Tesco earlier.

STM 09-19-2011 09:54 AM

Yeh but they expect the money back, and besides, that defeats the object of the thread.

Manco 09-19-2011 10:03 AM

Invest the money in business shares.

STM 09-19-2011 10:11 AM

What company sells a share for £10, and in an economy with 0.2% growth and a crappy inflation rate, it wouldn't be very wise.

JennyGenesis 09-19-2011 10:21 AM

Well to be honest, I wouldn't have a clue on what to do with the tenner. So that's me out. You said you were "given" this tenner, its not giving if they expect it back.

STM 09-19-2011 10:26 AM

Loaning then, or maybe they invested it in me. Who knows.

Start-ups, and large companies with lots of shares.

STM 09-19-2011 10:29 AM

Perhaps, but I don't trust the English stock market right now, hell even saying that out loud anywhere in London will probably effect the FTSE by 100 points.

Havoc 09-19-2011 10:41 AM

Invest in Apple.

Invest in Apple.

He only has ten bucks, you realise how much Apple shares cost?

Daxter King 09-19-2011 11:01 AM

Use the money to buy a knife, stab a person to death and take any money they have on them. Repeat until you feel as if you have enough money.

It's not like you're thinking of investing a shit tonne of money. Sometimes you have to take risks, and with a tenner you wouldn't be losing out on much if things go tits up.

STM 09-19-2011 11:05 AM

I suppose, I always have delusions of grandeur and I dunno, something just sparked in me with this. Making money for myself has always appealed to me.

Ridg3 09-19-2011 11:08 AM

Start a pyramid scheme. That should do it.

STM 09-19-2011 11:16 AM

With £10?

Strike Witch 09-19-2011 12:52 PM

Use it to buy a pen and some paper.

Then write "10 Bucks cash equivalent" on the paper and turn it in.

Welcome to the world of business!

This is what you should absolutely not do. What you should do is invest your £10 in the small business I own, and I'll return it to you in six months at 200% interest. But hey, get your friends to help out and maybe I'll make that 1000%. The more the merrier, right guv?

MeechMunchie 09-19-2011 02:05 PM

A penny saved is a penny earned. Fold the £10 note into a basket and put change in it.

Daxter King 09-19-2011 02:23 PM

Use the money to distract an aloof, yet loving parent away from their child, steal the child and hold it for ransom. Be sure to do research first, dont ask for anything absolutely impossible, but still squeeze the aloof fucker dry.

Because if you put in 100 pounds of your own money, they would give you an iPad 2 that you could sell for 200 pounds.
