Dev Question
Did you ever use the Quicksave option in Stranger's Wrath?
Argument for: It's an Oddworld staple It is quicker than regular saving Intuitive Argument Against: There are *plenty* of autosaves everywhere Regular saving is pretty quick anyway (push X a couple of times and it's done) It's not really the sort of game where you need quicksave What do you guys think? I'm in the process of making a final art pass on the menus and would like you guys to let me know whether I should put the quicksave option into the pause menu. |
All the damn time. I'm a paranoid fucker when I play games, I'd always quicksave right before every single fight, and right after.
|
I think check points are way better than quicksave, if you have quicksave the game is far to easy and there's no worry about dying.
|
I felt it was the kinda game that didn't really need it. Normal saving is just as quick. I don't think i used quick save that much.
But at the same time, it is an Oddworld staple and would feel weird without it. |
Yep, I quicksaved before every confrontation (if I remembered to do so).
|
I haven't played the game, but I still feel I can contribute here.
If the game doesn't need it don't put it in. Quicksave can kill intense atmosphere. EDIT: Oh. I didn't realise it was in the original. |
I forgot regularly in every game. It was infuriating.
|
As far as I can remember, I used it during big fight scenes, so it made the game easier for me. I could do without as long as checkpoints are put in fair, unforgiving places. :p
|
I did use the Quicksave, but I don't think it's 100% vital as it's not a game with one-hit kills. As long as the game isn't reduced to only a checkpoint system and we still have the option to do manual saves, I don't mind if the Quicksave is taken out.
To comment on your pros and cons in the OP, I don't think the pros are especially important and I agree with the second and third con point. In some respects, I actually disliked the quicksave because it was always over-written by the next quicksave. I tried to do regular manual saves so that I'd have a history to back to. |
I say put the quiksave in.
Those who want it will be happy Those who don't want it are not forced to use it. |

Related to Jenny's post, consider how many people would be pissed off on discovering Quicksaving had been removed.
There's already people getting angry over the least little things, removing a handy save feature wouldn't go down too well. |
I like that after two hours, Alf's Facebook poll is 66 in favour of QuikSave, 5 against.
|
I used it in the middle of bossfights, after capturing suicide bombers alive, or after doing other difficult things - If it's not broke, don't fix it. :P
|
Hey, here's a revolutionary idea: Remove quicksave from pause menu buttons and make a keyboard hotkey for it :| E.g. "F6" button like in Source games
|
Wouldn't work on the console versions.

Used for the inventory screen if I remember correctly. As I said, if it's not broken, don't fix it.
|
Quicksave isn't necessary for SW, but I also don't think it should be removed. Even if I only end up using it once or twice throughout the entire game, I'd appreciate having the option available to me.
Part of me thinks the game is too easy to need it. Then I remembered how taxing some of the areas of Last Legs and Sekto Springs Dam were. You can only be gunned down and air-humped by Wolvarks so many times before wishing the checkpoint was just a little closer to where you keep fucking dying. If you're going to give players the option of choosing game difficulty, then perhaps keep the Quicksave for "easy" and completely remove it or limit it's number of uses for more difficult modes. |

What about thinking outside of a box: Maybe it's not that there are too many buttons, maybe the buttons themselves are too big?
|
Yes

I hope its like AE quicksave where I could just go "start down X" and it would be done instantly, instead of "start down down down, down left x" or whatever and then have a 3 second delay :P
|
Lose the Options button instead. Volumes? Gamma? Control schemes? Who uses those? Nobody, that's who.
Except me |
Maybe post a picture of the old menu? I don't see why buttons need to be removed at all. It's a menu for a reason =/
|
Nah, I don't have to lose anything. The problem is making the menus lovely and hi res, with intricate details, but making sure that the buttons are large enough that the text can still be read if someone is playing the game on a standard definition TV.
I'll sort it though; everyone stop worrying :P |
No one's worrying about it except you. ;) Calm it Glitch it'll work out fine, you won't be fired. It's cool.
|
I'd be worried too if we were my fanbase.
|
I'd find it amusing, so long as I took what we said with a pinch of salt. :P
